The Zen Hale is the perfect home base for your exploration of the Big Island. We are conveniently located on the sunny side of Waimea Town only a 10 minute drive to the best Kohala beaches and minutes from HPA. Our convenient central location is ideal for setting out on day hikes or exploring all the sites on Hawaii Island. The unique serenity of this one bedroom, one bath cottage offers ocean and mountain views enhanced by cool breezes and mild temperatures. The kitchen is fully furnished with full size refrigerator, large convection/toaster oven, microwave and a 2 burner state of the art induction cook top. Luxurious linens adorn the separate bedroom and a beautiful stone shower appoint the bathroom.

Use the gas BBQ outdoors to prepare the local foods purchased at the farmers market then relax while viewing the blanket of stars. A separate laundry room with washer and dryer is available for use and laundry detergent is provided.

You will find yourself minutes away from the best beaches on the Big Island. The largest of Hawaii Island’s white sand beaches, Hapuna Beach, has consistently been rated on numerous international Top Ten lists. Mauna Kea Beach, a perfect crescent of golden sand leading to calm water, has been voted among the Top 10 beaches in the U.S. Both offer great conditions for swimming, sunbathing, bodyboarding and snorkeling.

Beyond the beaches, Hawaii offers a host of outdoor activities and sightseeing opportunities. Head to the Paniolo Town of Waimea and visit the many shops and galleries. From there is the perfect starting point for a trip to the Volcano National Park or a glimpse of the stars and planets at Mauna Kea Observatory.

There's no better way to experience the amazing cultural diversity of Hawaii Island than to visit one of the farmers’ markets that take place all around the island. You’ll find fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables used in Hawaii Regional Cuisine, exotic varieties that are as intriguing as they are tasty plus an eclectic collection of prepared foods.The market is also a great place to pick up handmade artwork or a unique gift and strike up a conversation with the artist who made them.

About Matthew

Moved to the Big Island 10 years ago from Portland, Oregon. I have lived all around the U.S. but I feel that this is my true home. Rose and I just spent an amazing month in Nepal and India, but the best part was coming back to Hawaii. In 1999, while attending an alternative building design seminar in Cottage Grove, Oregon, I was introduced to the concept of permaculture. Although the original focus of permaculture was sustainable food production, over time the philosophy of permaculture has expanded to encompass economic and social systems. Today I have my Permaculture Design Certification and also my Permaculture Teacher Training Certification. My passion now is working to make our Big Island property an example of permaculture design, and in cultivating Bodhisattva Healing Gardens to become a place where these healing ideas are shared.

Wonderful, peaceful and sweet studio

From the moment you pull up, you know the Zen Hale is going to be something special-- from the sweet walkway, to the beautiful outside, to the studio with everything you need, but too much. The word "sanctuary" comes to mind. Ideally located in what I think is the BEST place on the Island-- between Waimea and the gorgeous Kohala beaches. We didn't spend that much time in the cabin, because exploring the area was so awesome-- but the time we did spend was heaven. Crazy good value for the cost. We will return!

Rural beauty close to beaches and town

Zen Hale became like home within a day. The most private of the cottages, nestled among fragrant flowering trees. This retreat is at about 2,000 foot elevation, ten minutes from astounding beaches, and five minutes from restaurants of Waimea. View of mountains if clear. Comfy bed, tiled shower. Birdlife in the mornings, wonderful hosts. Informing values: conservation, Zen, minimalist, seemed like a persistence of the sixties. Coffee beans and French press supplied! We liked it!

A quiet and private delight of a cottage close to the beaches!

My husband and I stayed at the Zen Hale for 9 days and loved it! It is so close to so many beaches - 10 minute drive or so. We would leave early in the morning and go to the beach (or go touring if it was rainy) and then come home and make dinners here. We did eat dinners and lunches out in Waimea, which is about 10 minutes the other way. This place has all you need to make great dinners! We found a fish market close by too! We loved the privacy here, how safe it was and how quiet. Matthew and Rose were only a text away if we had a question. We saw a rainbow out the front door one day. Another morning we saw a flock of turkeys. This is a great base to see this side of the island - the beaches, Waimea and the Parker Ranch and all the other places that I can't remember their names because every town seems to have a K's, H's, A's and O's in it! It was really hard to leave this place, but we did and spent the other half of our stay on the Hilo side of the Big Island. Thanks Matthew and Rose for everything!

beauty, peace, comfort

very beautifully decorated inside and comfortable. Kitchen area is small yet workable, and I liked the gas bbq outside The bed and bedroom area are very sweet. The whole space, inside and out, is peaceful and quiet. fantastic land and views from the outside . 10 min to the beach, 10min to the town/stores. yes, wife and I loved it.

Waimea, also called Kamuela, is the largest town in the interior of the Big Island, and is the center for ranching activities and paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy). This historic area full of rolling, green pastures is still home to cattle, cowboys and ranches. The Parker Ranch in and around Waimea is the largest privately owned cattle ranch in the US, and the annual Fourth of July rodeo is a major event.

But there is more to Waimea than just paniolo. This area is now home to a thriving community. You’ll find one of Hawaii Island’s finest chefs at Merriman’s Restaurant. Peter Merriman is three-time finalist in the prestigious James Beard Awards for Best Chef and is one of the founding members of Hawaii Regional Cuisine. You can also find the Kahilu Theatre here, a 490-seat cultural mecca on Hawaii Island featuring performances by renowned musicians, dancers and artists.

The Waimea Cherry Blossom Heritage Festival, held annually in the first week of February, has recently become another major event of the town. In the center of town you can find Hawaiian art at the Isaacs Art Center and the Wishard Gallery.

Waimea is also home to the headquarters of two astronomical observatories located on Mauna Kea, the W. M. Keck Observatory and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. It is also headquarters of the International Lunar Observatory Association

To explore the road less traveled, the Kohala Mountain Road (Highway 250) leads north from Waimea to the charming town of Hawi. Most visitors miss this beautiful drive, but it’s a scenic way to get from Waimea to Hawi and the stunning Pololu Valley Lookout, which showcases breathtaking coastal views of the Hamakua Coast.
