About Janice Leutheuser

Both my husband Fritz and myself, Janice, grew up on the east coast in Michigan and Georgia respectively. After my husband decided to start his own business and I left the airline industry to start a family, we settled in beautiful Santa Barbara, CA in 1991. We have two children in college now and an unrelenting thirst for travel!

Janice Leutheuser purchased this condo in 2002

Why Janice Leutheuser chose North Shore

Traveling extensively for 9 years within the airline industry provided me with a great insight as to the 'special' destinations that sung to me. The north shore of Kauai kept calling upon us, thus, we returned year after year until we found our sanctuary at Hanalei Bay Resort. I can honestly say it is still getting harder and harder to leave paradise behind!

What makes this condo unique

Tropically furnished with bamboo cathedral ceilings, a loft with 2 queen beds for added accommodations, three bedrooms with new Travertine tiled shower/tub, a fully stocked modern kitchen with granite counter top and glass/cherry cabinetry, washer/dryer, dining area seating for 8-10, large comfortable sectional sofa/chaise, and 3 private lanais all with unobstructed views of Hanalei Bay and the mountains beyond. Building is situated at the start of the paved beach path and directly across from the tennis courts, ice machine, and resort laundry facility.

Guestbook comments from the owner

HBR is a large condominium resort made up of several 3-story buildings, some of which have fantastic views of the mountains and Hanalei Bay. It has gorgeous, well kept-up tropical grounds and a very laidback Hawaiian feel to it. Cars are not allowed within the resort itself- just the little carts driven by hotel staff, so depending on which unit you stay in, you may have quite a walk to your car.

We booked a 1 bedroom unit with a loft in the Palms building- number 4302, to be exact. Every unit is different and I can only comment on the one we stayed in, but if you have the opportunity, this is a great unit to stay in. It’s on the top floor, with 2 private decks overlooking gorgeous bay and mountain views. It’s spacious and high-end, and looks like it was renovated recently, with stainless steel appliances and a tropical design theme. The unit is so well-stocked, it seemed I just had to look for something and there it was. It also came with some nice welcome goodies.

If I could change one thing, it would be to have the resort pool heated- it’s beautiful, but not very welcoming in the winter. Also, if you’re trying to find the resort for the first time, keep in mind when you’re driving along Kuhio Highway that there’s no sign for Ka Haku Road, and you should just make the turn when you see a dark brown sign for the St. Regis.

Paradise found! What a gem!

  • 5 of 5

Look no further! The beauty of Kauai is only surpassed by the elegance of this unit. Janice must be an interior designer b/c this home is so tastefully decorated with such amazing attention to detail. Every need was anticipated down to a bountiful gift basket (coffee, wine, pineapple, papaya, chocolates and more) Ziploc bags, spices, movies, novels, guidebooks, chairs, coolers, snorkel gear, floats...I can't even name it all! The loft was wonderful for our kids to have their own space. There are high end furnishings, a chef's kitchen, grills on property, an ice machine down the steps, washer/dryer and a great big fridge...the list goes on and on. We stayed in the middle unit and were treated to the most beautiful Hanalei Bay vistas: the ocean, mountain, waterfall and sunset views from the expansive balcony were breathtaking. I literally couldn't tear my eyes away. We didn't have the best weather during our week and barely even noticed because the view was stunning every hour of the day, in every type of weather. If I never left the balcony it would have been the vacation of a lifetime!! We bought fresh fish and grilled one night which was fun and easy due to the ample kitchen set up. The tropical pool is stunning as well, with a hot tub and and more unbeatable views. There is even a swim-up bar! Don't miss the manager's rum punch party on Mondays! I honestly can't say enough good things. We look forward to coming back as soon as time allows. Can't imagine staying anywhere else now, we are spoiled!! We have been lucky enough to stay at the Westin, Sheraton, St. Regis and Grand Hyatt on Kauai through the years and this is by FAR our favorite. You have created a little piece of paradise for all your guests, Janice. Thank you for an unforgettable getaway (and for graciously mailing back my forgotten flip-flops!!) The memories and views will last a lifetime (or at least until our next visit!!)

Perfect Family Units

  • 5 of 5

I recently used the entire Top Floor Unit 430123 for my family of 9 people including my husband and myself and my 2 daughters, their husbands and their 3 children to celebrate my "big" birthday. It was a delightful place to stay with fabulous views overlooking Hanalei Bay. The decor was lovely and the kitchen was amazingly outfitted with everything one could want. Janice was very responsive to any of my questions and needs. This was the first time I had ever used Home Away or VRBO. I was used to booking hotel rooms, but with so many people the price of the rooms I would have needed became prohibitive and the extra space afforded us with this rental was the perfect solution. The only drawback was that two of my young grandchildren slept in the loft and the adults felt as though they had to be very quiet in the living room after those kids went to bed. This situation could have been alleviated had my daughter and son-in-law slept in the loft giving up the bedroom to their children but they chose not to do that. At any rate, we still enjoyed the unit so much and would return in a heartbeat should our future plans take in Kauai.

Hanalei Bay Resort is in a picture perfect location. I could go on and on but I'd just be repeating previous reviews.

You can't go wrong with this condo!

The perfect place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

The first time we came to Kauai, our whole extended family stayed in all the adjoining units. It was perfect for a large group. Plenty of room for everyone. We had such a great time and loved our accommodations so much we returned for Spring Break with just our family, my husband and I and our two sons. We rented the main unit only, which worked out great. My husband and I had the master suite and the boys slept in the loft. We loved our trip once again and especially the condo we stayed in. The owner is wonderful along with the on sight manager. They're both great to work with. The condo is nicely decorated with a well stocked kitchen so having meals at home was easy. A big plus when you have kids. They have great equipment for the beach; chairs, boogie boards, and coolers. The condo is centrally located at the resort with a great view of Hanalei Bay. The new restaurant on the property makes eating out easy. The restaurant also has fun live music almost every night. If you play tennis you'll enjoy several well maintained courts including a few grass courts to play on. We played tennis in the mornings and had a blast. This has become one of our favorite vacation spots. Out of all the islands in Hawaii , we love Kauai the most. We'll be back and we can't imagine staying anywhere else.

Owner's Response: I am thrilled that you consider our unit a "home away from home" on the spectacular north shore of Kauai! With all of the new remodeling and additions to the resort, guests can enjoy Kauai in all of its beauty including the ever changing landscape with rainbows across the bay during morning coffee on our lanai to premium Mai Tai's at The Happy Talk Lounge during surreal sunsets! We look forward to hosting you and your family/friends for years to come! Mahalo and until next time....

Just Imagine breakfast EVERY morning, rain or shine with the view of a dream !

We stayed in 4302 for 10 days. That's the central unit of the top three

We were greated by the same birds everyday and loved hearing the different sounds that amuzed us. The pictures don't lie ! It's Amazing !

What a great unit to come home to every day.

The time we spent on the lanai was so relaxing and breathtaking at the same time !

This unit has absolutely everything you need !

The best kitchen and cookware, well Cared for by the management team.

Can't tell you how convenient and quiet the washing machine was !

Janice the owner is hands down the best owner we've ever rented from !

Michelle who manages the unit was amazing to work with also !

We had a cracked coffe pot and on a weekend she delivered Another one to us before we even realized it was there !

Mahalo Nui Loa to you both !

Couldn't be happier with our stay !

Hanalei Bay is so incredibly well maintained, the grounds are gorgeous !

The staff all through the resort was 5 Star !

My wife and I loved it !

They are continuing work on the restaurant and bar and have hired a firm to set up staff for them both. It will be amazing when they get done.

We can't wait to go back !

This side of the Island is so dense and lush !

Owner's Response: It is such a joy to share the magic of Kauai's unbelievable north shore with appreciative travelers! From the double rainbows over the bay viewed from our lanai, to the ever changing landscape of Hanalei Bay, the view promises to deliver an unforgettable experience. So many recent additions to Hanalei Bay Resort, including a total lobby remodel, enhances our guests stay.

Would move in if I could

  • 5 of 5

This is our maybe 5 or 6th trip to Kauai and we've stayed at the Westin condos before up north. Previously we've stayed at the Koa Kea or the Marriott in Lihue on points. This was our first experience with Janice and Hanalei Bay. We were there in March and there was still no on-site restaurant which was NOT a deal killer for us. One of the spas was down for maintenance but that's ok they had another one. There were several unsupervised children in it, which was annoying but after a handful of grownups took over the space they moved off. Those are the only minor VERY MINOR quibbles. The staff at the HBR all seemed really nice but we only interacted with them at check in and check out. The condo itself, we got 4302 from Janice, which I highly recommend, had views exactly as pictured. It was a stormy winter so we were treated to the sound of ocean waves, which I was not expecting. :) I love to sleep to ocean waves. It is a 5 minute walk to a very private beach shared with Princeville. It's down the hill and you can call for a ride there and/or back. The condo was supplied with chairs, coolers, boogie boards, snorkeling, etc. The kitchen was outfitted with everything you need. We ended up eating several meals in the condo. The room key has a locals discount card at the local Foodland which saved us a lot of money on especially wine. A big thank you to the folks before us who left the Chardonnay in the fridge. We tried to pay it forward as well. Stop by the condo and see what's left before you stock up on supplies. We went to the farmer's market in Lihue on Saturday, which I highly recommend, and checked in and were happy to find that a lot of what we needed to prepare food was already there. i.e. olive oil, coffee bean grinder, salt and pepper, soy sauce, balsamic vinegar, etc. The rice maker took some doing to figure out but we got it ok. They have everything you might need to make anything. Even a Silpat and a lot of baking items. There's even a rack to hang clothes to dry on, which was appreciated. We only booked the middle condo unit. I'm not sure if anyone was to our left but there was one couple to our right and the only reason we knew this was because we saw them having breakfast on their patio in the morning. We could not hear anything from their room. We used the TV/stereo system to plug in our iPad to play music and had to turn the volume up really high to make it work if anyone has a similar issue. We did not use the TV/Stereo otherwise. The Wifi, w

Absolutely Loved This Place!

  • 5 of 5

We rented this unit for the week of our wedding. It was perfect for everyone. The view is absolutely gorgeous. We enjoyed mornings out on the lanai drinking our coffee and watching all of the amazing wildlife. The owner has thought of everything. The kitchen was stocked with everyday things you may need to cook with and was great for entertaining. There were boogie boards, beach chairs, coolers and tennis rackets. The couch area just outside the unit was a great place for everyone to gather and watch the sunset. All of the beds were very comfortable and it was nice to have air-conditioning for those hot days. All the special touches such as coffee and some local treats were a nice touch. The owner was very easy to work with and the property manager was very helpful with getting packages to us. We stayed here our first 9 days and then rented a place on the southend of the island for 9 days.

We liked the place so much we came back up and spent 2 more nights.

The location is close to everything.

After traveling around the island we discovered that Hanalie Bay Resort has the best pool. Beautifully landscaped and quiet.

The restaurant was under construction when we were there. It looks like its going to be a first class addition to the property.

Thank you for everything and we look forward to coming back for our 1 year anniversary.

Owner's Response: It is always so rewarding to hear reviews like this when our guests feel right at home, not only in our unit but at the resort, and especially for monumental occasions! It is a real testament to Kauai's north shore that you just had to re-visit again from the south shore before departing! We will look forward to hearing from you again in the near future and your "island home" will be awaiting you!
