Our attention to detail sets us apart....The Ponderosa Lodge dry cleans all bed linens (Comforters, Shams and Blankets) between ALL guest arrivals. Our HouseKeepers sanitize and wash all sheets, pillow cases, throws, towels and wash cloths for each guests arrival. We do this because we feel every guest deserves sanitized and clean linens. The practice of not cleaning comforters, blankets and shams between guest is not only an appalling practice; it is unhealthy. We take pride in our lodge and go the extra mile ensuring our lodge is clean and sanitary for your stay. Upon your arrival you will be given a "starter" Welcome Package that includes cleaning supplies, 4 rolls of toilet tissue, a roll of paper towels, new kitchen towels, new kitchen sponge and a few other items to start your vacation off right. This Welcome Package is our way of saying "Thank You for reserving at the Ponderosa Lodge".
If you are looking for wildlife, you will not be disappointed. Some of the wildlife you may see will be hummingbirds, chipmunks, raccoons and the famous elk. Many elk visit the Ponderosa Lodge property and it is a beautiful site to behold. Please do not chase the elk; these elk are in the wild and are not to be approached or fed. Wildlife that become familiar with people may be put down by the Park Rangers to ensure the safety of people. Please maintain a safe distance from our beautiful wildlife. We provide bird seed and nectar for you to feed the birds. Make sure to bring your binoculars and flashlights to spot the wilderness during day and evening hours.
There are numerous paths and dirt roads to explore by hiking, dirt biking, mountain biking (for those who dare), and four-wheeling. Walk to the Masonic Temple monument located off the Blue Ridge Parkway (40 min walk one way from cabin) or just explore the 1.25 acre Ponderosa Lodge property and enjoy some hot dogs or roasting marshmallows over the fire pit in the yard.

**The Ponderosa Lodge is the last house on the road sitting on top of the mountain with an elevation of 4900+ ft. To obtain this breath taking view you do have to travel to the top of the mountain. The Blue Ridge Mountains is behind the lodge. Other cabins many be visible from the driveway but the porch with the rocking chairs and hot tub face the mountain range provides privacy and seclusion. There are two roads that may be traveled to access the lodge. The quickest route is a hard surface dirt/gravel with steep access for 0.5 miles. The total distance to reach the cabin is on a single gravel road with a 8% incline at the first part of this road and is 1.3 miles long and does have guardrails on initial 0.3 miles of road. If you are looking to be directly downtown this is not the lodge for you. Our guests return for the view, the privacy, elk, nature and to spend QUALITY time with their families and friends. The alternative second road can be used for all types of vehicles, that road is 2.7 miles and not as steep and it is a dirt and gravel road but there will be a few places with an incline. The alternate route will take more time and you will driving through a mountain community. Detailed directions of both routes will be provided to you for your traveling option. During inclement weather four wheel drive is required and during the other seasons front wheel drive is suggested unless the longer access road is used. Driving will be on mountain roads with dirt and gravel, with an incline to the lodge and a decline leaving the lodge for your daily activities. We have had guest who arrive in Prius's, Corolla's, Camry's, Sonata's, Elantra's (sedans); guests arriving in trucks, SUV's, 4 wheel drive and all wheel drive, rear wheel drive is not suggested. Placing your vehicle in low gear is suggested. Mountain driving is all about the drivers comfort level. We will not reserve our lodge to guests who are apprehensive about driving up or down gravel mountain roads or to guest who want to arrive in Smart cars, CanAMs, motorcycles, or corvettes. Upon signature of our contract, we ask for your vehicle type so we can provide you with additional information should additional information be needed. As we would love to have guests reserve with us who would like to arrive in these types of vehicles but gravel roads are not for motorcyclists and low sitting vehicles. The lodge does have a paved driveway and a garage for parking. We have provided a gravel parking lot below the Ponderosa should you choose to park on gravel or for overflow parking for your guests. We have a Sienna van and we have had no problems arriving at the lodge on both routes. Please keep in mind that the Ponderosa Lodge does have some of the most spectacular views and with that said, anywhere a lodge or cabin has a view it will take time to access since it is not on a main low road. If you choose to reserve the Ponderosa Lodge it is for the view, privacy, nature and to spend quality time with family and friends with all the amenities of home.
The temperature at the Ponderosa Lodge averages a minimum of 10 degrees cooler than down in the valley. Always bring a jacket/sweatshirt just in case, even in the summer months it is usually cooler in the evenings. Open the windows and let in the fresh mountain air. If it is warmer then the use of air conditioning and ceiling fans are an option. For the cooler months there is gas heat or enjoy heat of the pot belly stove fireplace. At this elevation the weather is different than in the valley. It may be raining on top of the mountain but sun shining in the towns below. Venture out...see the sites!
As our guests, you will be asked to dispose of your trash at the trash disposal facilities located in town. Theses facilities are situated on roads where guest who leave mountain homes can dispose of their trash upon departure or while venturing out. The reason for this is to prevent guest leaving trash in cabins and lodges, garage or on the porches for animals to become familiar with and return. Remember....A fed bear is a dead bear.
Our departure time is 10:00 a.m. firm. This gives us time to remove all previous guest linens for dry cleaning, gives the HouseKeepers time to clean, Pest Control and Hot Tub Service, maintenance, and yard service needed prior to the next arrival at 3:00 pm. During your stay you may see the Hot Tub Company testing the water or our landscaper trimming the grass. Many services are taking place prior to your arrival and this window of time allows us to do what is needed to make your stay as comfortable as your own home.
We take great pride in our lodge and strive to provide as many amenities as possible to make each guest feel right at home.
