About Nicholas

Nature lover, sometimes painter (the good paintings in the house are my partner's - Ariane paints wonderful animals and african scenery, I do the unreal abstract stuff).

I feel very fortunate to have a home in such a special place. Morocco is magical and Essaouira in particular has an easygoing bohemian charm, reminding me of southern Spain many years ago. Most importantly, there are some wonderful people here. Yassine (our caretaker) and his family are the nicest people you could hope to meet. Some very dear friends amongst the expat community too. We think this good feeling reaches all guests who stay at Dar El Araïch.

Nicholas purchased this villa in 2007

Why Nicholas chose Morocco

When I first discovered Essaouira I looked at many different locations and decided that this land, just to the north of town in El Araïch, with its endless forest stretching down to the beach, was a unique combination of natural beauty and some essential practical features:

Low density neighbourhood, (and within that, an elevated position) a good access track and proximity to Essaouira town.

Luckily land was available at the top of the valley, so the house could stand alone, with other houses lower down and practically out of sight. Designing and building building the dream home could begin!

I think we did pretty well...personally. We keep changing and improving, maybe one day it will come close to perfect.

What makes this villa unique

No other way to put it - the location is simply fantastic: Easy access, complete privacy, great views and the best walks. The house is designed to make the most of these advantages and is styled to be both contemporary and in keeping with local custom. Easy on the eye and in natural colours, the idea is for a relaxing, homely atmosphere.

Stone combines with materials like traditional tadelakt (a surface render which is similar to stucco), giving a beautiful shiny finish when waxed. It is also quite sensitive so please treat with care.

The kitchen is a central part of the house, with a direct view to the pool (for us people busy in the kitchen who also like to see what is going on - specially useful to check on the kids).

A perfect stay

  • 5 of 5

We stayed two weeks with our family, seven adults and two children, in Dar El Araich, celebrating christmas and new year in maroc. Arriving at the house we were totally fleshed by the beauty of the property and it´s wonderful view over the valley. We were welcomed by Yassin, the housekeeper, his wife and his sister who were helping us cooking, and felt very much at home right away. We received a very good introduction and a warm welcome by Phil, a friend of the owner, who explained us everything about the house, the best places to be in Essaouira and a little about marrocan culture. The house really provides everything for a great holiday. Various terraces for sunbathing, all with a great view and protected of the wind. The architecture of the house is great. You have two bedrooms, who are almost like a little flat within the house, with their own bathroom and a room for dressing. Two bedrooms, which a small but also very comfortable. The beds are very comfortable, which is really nice. The kitchen area is great, with everything in there what you need, also to prepare food for 9 or more people. And than you have a nice living room with a fire place, which heated up the house enough, which was important in winter time. The house provided everything we needed to feel at home, a nice collection of cd, books in spanish, english, french, etc., lots of animals in the garden and the area, and a sweet dog. So overall we really felt like kings, being there for two weeks. We enjoyed the help of the wife and sister of yassin very much, who prepared breakfast and dinner for us (it was a extra arrangement, which Nicholas made for us). The food was great and we learned from than a little bit more about marrocco. You can asked the owner for the contact. So I can highly recommend the house, if you want to have a individual but also luxury stay near essaouira.

Wonderful!!

  • 5 of 5

The photographs do not so Villa Dar El Araich justice! It is set in quiet and charming grounds that are a hive of wildlife activity, including some excellent bird life, and all with a delicious pool. The rooms are wonderful, especially the master bedroom which is stunning with the dombed ceiling.

The Villa is exceptionally clean with everything you could need provided, we were able to cater for oursleves using local produce from Essaouira.

Nicholas and Yassine were excellent hosts answering the numerous questions we had before we arrived and helping out during our stay.

The walk to the beach was beautiful and is well worth it, with a completely isloated stretch to sit and enjoy.

Essaouira is a reasonable distance and offers some lovely restaurants and bars.

A fantastic villa and great hosts!!! Thank you.

October Stay at Dar-El-Araich

  • 5 of 5

On our arrival at Dar-El-Araich we were immediately made feel welcome by Nicholas who showed us a clean, spacious and generally very well presented house with pool, which would become our home for the next week or so.

The house benefits from an elevated, quiet and peaceful position. And it is surrounded by a beautiful and rugged landscape, dominated by a huge wild and green forest, which can be explored

or accessed directly adjacent to the house. An added bonus for us was also the fact, that we could slightly hear the sound of the Atlantic Ocean in the background.

I would definitely advise to hire a car in order to reach the well stocked supermarket in Essaouria town. Or, if you can pull yourself away from the house at all, I would recommed an excursion to the nearby village of Sidi Kaouki, which apparently was chosen as a beach location for the Hollywood movie Sex And The City 2. The old Medina of Essaouira is also worth a visit, where (quite in contrary to the Marrakesh Medina ! ) you can actually wander the streets without being hassled by local traders all the time. The old town has a good choice of either simple or fashionable restaurants. And there are other hidden gems in the surrounding area, the secrets of which Nicholas is happy to share with his guests when asked.

Dar-El-Araich is definitely spacious enough to accommodate two families in comfort.

My family did enjoy their stay very much and we shall return in the foreseeable future!

With our best wishes

Essaouira holiday villa - Dar El Araich

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed in this lovely villa in July/August for 2 weeks. The villa matched its description and photos very well. Although the property was only finished last year it was built in traditional style, was extremely clean, well appointed, spacious and cool. We also liked the fact that the property ran on eco friendly terms with its supply of electricity and water. As there were 8 of us staying we did have to be a little careful with the amount of water we used so that the well could cope but it was never a problem for us.

The owner provided us with a very generous welcome pack of food and drink on our arrival which was gratefully received as we didn't arrive at the property until after midnight. The following day

the owner then took us on a tour round the local town of Essaouira. He showed us the best places to shop, restaurants etc which we found particularly useful as it was our first visit to Morocco. He was also on hand to answer any queries we had and he had a good local knowledge of the area.

We thoroughly enjoyed Essaouira particularly wandering round the stalls and shops in the Medina and eating at some of the local restaurants. The harbour area with the fish stalls and fishing boats was definitely worth a visit.

We would also recommend visiting a women's co operative producing Argan oil and related products The children were also very intrigued (as was I!) by goats climbing Argan trees.

The local beach was about 3 kms walk from the villa along a track through woods and bushes. It was well worth the walk it to arrive at deserted sand dunes which back onto the seashore which stretched for miles with not another person to be seen.

Within the grounds of the property lives a Moroccan boy who looks after the property, pool, garden and the very well behaved dog and cat. He was very shy and discrete and never impinged on our privacy.

Morocco is a Muslim country and the girls in our party felt more comfortable wearing loose cotton/linen clothing covering their arms and legs when wandering round Essaouira etc.

We had a really lovely holiday and would highly recommend the villa to those seeking a relaxing holiday with the chance to sample Moroccan culture.

Prachtige Villa

  • 5 of 5

Bordering on miles of juniper forest, the house enjoys a wonderful setting, with views over El Araich hamlet and valley towards lower Atlas and the Atlantic. The local area and countryside is ideal for walks and a pleasure to explore - natural surroundings where donkeys, horses, camels, sheep and goats roam through evergreen woods, with tracks leading through the forest down to a spectacular untouched beach.

Nearby Essaouira has a relaxed atmosphere and offers all amenities such as fine dining, fashionable bars, cafés, a bustling Medina and many possibilities for shopping (from Carrefour supermarket to traditional medina market stalls) sightseeing, beachlife, sports and tours.
