It's impossible not to feel the past in present-day York. The city, sometimes called an architectural museum, has cobblestone streets, charming red brick houses and centuries-old Colonial buildings. York is in Pennsylvania's Dutch Country, which is a misnomer in that the area's not Dutch but Deutsch, from the German settlers who established it. And no wonder they wanted to: this scenic rural landscape teems with fertile soil, rolling pastures, forested hills and flowing streams that stem from the Susquehanna River. You'll love gazing at cows grazing, and there are vineyards, and fruit orchards where you can pick your own goodies. York itself is a land-locked urban area that's bisected by Codorus Creek, another Susquehanna tributary.
