Our parents discovered and immediately fell in love with this idyllic Bahamian island in the late 1960's. Shortly thereafter they purchased this plot of land with hopes of someday building their own retreat. After 20 years and 3 children, our father, a Cambridge, MA architect, was able to realize his dream design with the construction of Chrysalis. Today we three children enjoy bringing our own families to this special island to experience the relaxed Hope Town way of life.
Olivia Reyelt purchased this house in 1988
Our property allows for idyllic views of the harbor and is steps to the white sandy beach. The dramatic architectural design combines the interior and exterior living spaces. The studio allows for private sleeping from the main house. Chrysalis is centrally located in the settlement of Hopetown; steps to restaurants, shops and beaches.
Chrysalis is at the most narrow part of the island with frontal access to the harbor and rear access to the beach. The unique, architectural design of the house allows privacy while being in the center of town activity.
We have rented houses and stayed at hotels in Hope Town but this was the first time we went with our kids. We had two teenagers and an 11 year old. They stayed in the main house and we had the courtyard cottage. Perfect! The courtyard cottage had a bed, two closets and a full bath. 10 feet away is the main house with the kitchen, tv/couch and small deck to the harbor. Upstairs is one bath with a bedroom with two twin and another bedroom with a full bed. The house is literally where the town comes together. Restaurants to the left and right. Groceries to the right. Liquor store and diving to the left. It's so easy. But, really, the most incredible part of the property is the private beach access. What a beach. Beach diving. 2 minute walk to Lodge for cocktails. Now, it's the Out Islands. Be prepared for paradise to have a cost...had a power blackout the night on July 4th. Too much juice being used for restaurants, bars and ac's. Limit your power. Limit your water. What makes Hope Town special is it's totally different than your "typical" week at home.
We recently stayed at Chrysalis for a week and had such a blast! It such a charming island house that is actually much more spacious than you would think just by looking at it. When we arrived everything was spotless and beautiful. The house is equipped with Wi-Fi and has air conditioning throughout although we opened the house up a lot because we prefer the fresh island air. The Chrysalis is situated in the most ideal part of town for new comers to the island. Just down the street from Harbour’s Edge where you can get a fantastic fish burger and just a short walk to Capt'n Jacks, groceries, shops and liquor store. We docked our boat at the sailing club dock which you can see from the house and offers public docking during the day. We also had beach access as you walk out of the house and up the dune. This place is a gold mine and working with the owner, Olivia, and Elbow Cay Properties was extremely easy. They are great people, very honest and on point! If you are looking for a true local Bahamian retreat I highly recommend discovering Chrysalis!!
Set it a quaint Bahamian village with views of a candy striped lighthouse, Chrysalis fronts on the bustling harbor and backs to a mile-long sandy beach. Spend your days strolling the beach, body surfing in the waves, visiting the history museum, or snorkeling in the crystal blue waters. Or get more adventurous and rent a motor boat to go island hopping, go out on a charter fishing trip, or go scuba diving with Froggie's Out Island Charters. In the evening, enjoy cocktails on the porch and then wander to one of several restaurants offering local Bahamian cuisine. Hope Town has it all!
