Santa Chiara is the name of an old 17th century convent recently completely restored. It is a unique holiday destination- a small hilltop country estate located at the gates of Siena. Only fifteen minutes walk from the Campo, the shell-shaped mediaeval square at the heart of the city in which the Palio is run twice a year.
It is a big building with three apartments other than the owner's home. The welcoming accommodation is set in five hectares of beautiful garden offering stunning views of both the medieval city and the surrounding countryside. Guests can walk the estate and relax in the shade of its many trees, swim in the large outdoor pool, enjoy a game of tennis on the private court, and dine al fresco against the backdrop of the beautiful tuscan landscape.
Early in the morning, it is not unusual to run into pheasants, hares and deer. In your wandering, make sure not to miss a gigantic holm oak whose branches almost touch the ground, thus creating a large natural dome. Further down the road, you can cross a little bridge and get to a wide public area where you can find exercise equipment as well as a playground for children.
Olive trees are a feature the grounds, and this theme also run through the properties with furnishing as of olive wood, bathroom products made from olive extract and the estate’s olive oil available to purchase for the dinner table.
Santa Chiara was exactly as described, well equipped, the perfect location from which to explore Siena - just 15 minutes walk to the Piazza del Campo, and a little further to the bus station. The spectacular pool and accommodation were wonderful to retreat to at the end of a full day, or a lovely tranquil place to relax or take a walk through the olive groves, while enjoying views of the ancient city and its walls. It is the best of both worlds, having close pedestrian access to Siena and the peace and quiet of the countryside. Anna and her daughter, Claudia, were very welcoming and helpful. Be sure to take Claudia's free tour of the Duomo and city, and learn more about the art, history and customs of Sienna. We can't imagine a better place to stay and hope to return one day.
My husband, 7-year old son and I stayed in an apartment in this stunning estate for a week this past spring. It really was the best of both worlds: a quiet, country setting, within 15-minutes walking distance to the heart of Siena. Our apartment was spacious and comfortable. We so appreciated the wine, bread, salami and olive oil (made from the orchard on the property) as a welcoming gift. Anna's daughter Claudia went above and beyond to help us navigate a challenging situation--and we couldn't have been more grateful. Lots of room to walk around on the grounds (our son enjoyed kicking a soccer ball on the tennis court) and we loved drying our laundry in the greenhouse filled with potted lemon trees. We had a rental car for the week and visited other hill towns on day trips. A wonderful location with kind and gracious hosts! Highly recommend!!
The location of the apartment is just perfect. Once inside the estate you could be deep in the Tuscan countryside yet it is only 20 minutes walk to the hustle and bustle of the Campo. We first visited Santa Chiara in 2008 and fell in love with the place and have stayed here nearly every year since.
Anna is a very attentive host and the bread, olive and salami on arrival is most welcome
The apartment is spacious and well furnished and is a real haven to relax in after a day’s walking round Siena or sightseeing in San Gimignano, Florence, Pienza or any of the many sights within an easy drive from Siena.
A lovely way to see many of the hidden gems in Siena is to see if you can locate the emblem of each contrade. We spent many enjoyable hours trying to find a Porcupine or Eagle.
There are many restaurants to choose from in Siena. Trattoria Fori Porta is a relatively short walk and is very good. Gallo Nero in via Porrione serves good wholesome Sienese food and also does medieval dishes.
An alternative route back from the Campo is to go behind the Torre Mangia, through the Piazza del Mercato and down through the green valley and gardens of Orto de Pecci. This brings you out through the former psychiatric hospital at Porta Romana.
We would wholeheartedly recommend this property and will be visiting again in August/September 2014.

The apartment was just as described. Anna, the manager, was extremely helpful and provided a loaf of bread, salami and olive oil upon arrival. She was very helpful and an excellent host. We enjoyed the peaceful and quiet location. You could hear the pheasants crow in the morning! Heartily recommend the property for a relaxing get away, yet close enough to walk to the center of Siena. Small grocery about 5 minute walk away and a larger one about 15 minutes away.
The Trattoria ForiPorta was a short 15 minute walk away and was excellent.
The apartment had a supply of local maps and bus schedules as well as books on local points of interest.
We had an excellent relaxing vacation and saw many of the local sights.

This apartment was a welcome respite from the hustle of the city and served as the home base for trips to neighboring cities and villages such as Florence (1 hour by bus) and San Gimignano (1 hour by bus). It is an easy 15 minute walk to the larger grocery (there is a small grocery within a 5 minute walk) and the famous Campo Square which we enjoyed several times, especially at night. Children run and play, adults sit or lie down on the bricks, bells chime, people eat at the surrounding outdoor restaurants..... ahhh
The apartment is very clean and completely furnished with everything you need. Most important for travelers is a comfortable bed and we were very pleased with this one. We were welcomed with a loaf of bread, their own olive oil, and sausage for the first breakfast. There is a spectacular view from every window. Anna is a very helpful manager and lives on the property. Her English is excellent!
We took the SENA Bus from Rome (Termini Station) to Siena (station with lift). Then caught Bus 17, changed to Bus 2 and got off at the grocery by our destination. If I had it to do over though, we would take a taxi from the Siena train/bus station to the apartment because of the crowded local bus with luggage - 15-20 euros.
Fifteen members of my family vacationed in the three apartments for 2 nights at this wonderful Villa. Anna and Claudia welcomed us with salami, bread and wine and made every effort to make us feel at home. (We even had to chance to help them a little with the olive harvest!). They both are very interesting people.
The apartments are nicely decorated and very comfortable. The grounds are beautiful and it is hard to believe that you are just a walk away from being at the center of Siena. We did not get a chance to utilize the pool but I would imagine that it would be a wonderful plus in the heat of the summer.
My siblings were very impressed with our accommodations. I recommend this apartment wholeheartedly.
Santa Chiara is a uniquely located country estate on a hillside just outside the walls of Siena, with views towards the city on one side and over the Tuscan countryside on the other. It is about 15 minutes walk from the Campo, the shell-shaped mediaeval square at the heart of the city in which the Palio is run twice a year. With a large swimming pool in beautiful surroundings, the property offers relaxation as well as an ideal base for exploring the city. Situated as it is in the centre of Tuscany, many other beautiful and historic places are also accessible by car. Florence and San Gimignano are both within an hour’s drive. Arezzo and Lake Trasimeno are not much farther. The hill towns of ‘the Chianti’ as well as Montepulciano and Pienza are easily accessible. For the more adventurous, Assisi and Perugia are farther afield (100 km or so) but a good dual carriageway road makes them an easy day trip. Few other properties can offer the same combination of a relaxing poolside holiday
