Great Lake access. Fabulous water toys
Great place really good for kids old enough to use kayaks
Our kids loved playing at the water, so what's a cottage without toys!! One of the kayaks is a flat bottom, so it's very stable - perfect for young and old kids. We offer a small variety of games inside too.
We are a family of 4 (Husband, wife and 2 teenage girls). We were looking for a get away place that was close enough to a big city to easily make day trips which we did (Mt Washington and Boston). The cottage was supplied with 2 Kayaks, row boat and 1 SUP. We used these a lot during our stay. It was a quiet and small lake as described from the owner. This is what we were looking for.
Very much enjoyed our stay and the owners.
Our location really does offer a perfect proximity to the NH mountain regions, beaches and Boston!
A Wonderful Time on a Windham Waterfront
We highly recommend staying at Golden Deer Cottage. We are a family of four (two boys age 4 and 8) and stayed here for a week in July 2019.
First, the (few) negatives. The cottage is fairly small: one main room, two small bedrooms, a tiny bathroom, and a basement downstairs with a washer/dryer. If you have two kids, they will share a room. Second, the access road is poor, and it is a short, steep walk to the cottage from the parking area. If you don’t have a vehicle that can handle rough dirt roads, or if you have difficulty walking, you might have some trouble. Cell coverage was spotty, but there was Wi-Fi. No central air, but the cottage was shaded and stayed cool (we only used the window AC unit one night). There were mosquitoes, but not many. We did have some hassle setting up the reservation due to VRBO website issues, but the owners helped sort those out.
Now the many positives. Though the lake is ringed by cottages, this cottage is surrounded by trees, so it’s very private. It has its own sandy beach, a dock, and a float. The small beach is just fine for playing on with the provided sand toys. Two kayaks are provided, along with a large row boat and paddle board. I strongly agree with the Water Rat from Wind in the Willows: “There is nothing, absolutely nothing, as wonderful as simply messing around in boats!”, so these were a highlight. The smaller kayak was easy enough for my 8 year old to launch and paddle himself. Life jackets of all sizes were provided. The lake teems with fish (mostly sunfish), and we did a little fishing off the rickety dock. Fishing gear was provided, but the boys had better luck with nets on the beach. We went swimming every day. There’s no better way to start the day than with a sunrise swim! The lake was clear and almost as warm as a bath.
The cottage had a nice deck overlooking the lake and a fire pit by the shore. Inside, there was a wood burning stove, a TV with lots of movies, and toys for the boys to play with.
The owners were very accommodating. Just about everything we could need was provided. Our flight in was severely delayed, so they left the key for us and came by the next morning to go through the check in process. The hardest part of checkout was tearing ourselves away from the lake!
If you like swimming, paddling, fishing, or just sitting by a scenic lake in the woods, then Golden Deer Cottage is a wonderful choice!
This family had such a hard time traveling due to multiple flight delays and lost luggage. It’s kind of them to acknowledge that we accommodated their late arrival; we will always do our best to help out our guests. As always, we encourage guests to look through our listing including the photos to know what we offer and what the property looks like before booking. VRBO also offers a helpful 'Chat' option with their virtual assistant. The cottage is best suited for couples and small families -comfort is a priority. We most recently added reclining furniture in the living area and a portable AC unit that keeps the cottage cool even during the worst of New England heatwaves!
charming, peaceful, private, amazing sunsets
Our family was so happy at this cottage, we didn’t want to leave. The property is exactly as the listing described including that it’s the perfect spot on the lake to enjoy the sunsets, which were amazing. We all loved the boats and the paddle board and our kids couldn't get enough of the water and swimming with the fish, and our evenings by the fire along the water to make s'mores. There’s a good size backyard to play games too. It was everything we were looking for to relax, read a book, AND spend a fun week with the kids. There’s a lot of entertainment close by, and the entire family had great fun at Canobie Lake Park. The property is really well maintained inside and out, and the cottage is very clean. The laundry room is helpful, it has a large sink to rinse out our bathing suits and change the kids after swimming. The main level is spacious for its size with the open plan and the way it’s laid out and the furniture is functional and there’s two comfortable recliners. There are plenty of movies and assorted games for all ages. It was nice to eat dinner and see the water from inside and the outside deck is spacious as well with a large umbrella. We stayed in other homes that were larger but they weren’t more comfortable and as accessible to the water or situated as nicely as this cottage, and the amenities are plenty, everything we needed and more such as a cooler, various size life jackets, things you can’t bring when you’re traveling, so we fully appreciated how thoughtful the owners are. They are also very kind and communicated with us throughout the reservation and went above and beyond to be helpful. This property is quiet and private and really unique in many ways. We had a memorable visit and hope to stay here again!
