About Melanie & Paul Kastner/Owner
My husband and I were looking for a place to go on a nice quite beach vacation with our then 3 & 2yr old children(2011). We saw Cape San Blas on Google maps and decided to go there, we fell in love instantly and can not think of a better place to spend time with our family. It is the most peaceful and gorgeous place we have ever been. Every person that we have met there and ones that we have sent there since, have been back numerous times. The beaches are beautiful, sugar fine sand, blue-green water, amazing sunsets.
Melanie & Paul Kastner/Owner purchased this Cottage in 2012
Why Melanie & Paul Kastner/Owner chose Port St. Joe
When we decided to buy a house in Cape San Blasin 2012, Sail Away was our first choice. The cottage charm of this house can not be resisted. Being that it is only 180 steps from the water, maybe 50 steps to the sand, it is ideal for adults and children alike. Not to mention the beach walk over makes hauling all of your beach essentials a piece of cake.
What makes this Cottage unique
You will fall in love with this cottage from the wrap-a-round decking & the outdoor shower to the cheery Caribbean colors inside. The fully equipped kitchen has everything you could possibly need. The screened in porch has great views and faces the beach so you get that wonderful breeze off of the water. Gulf views from almost every part of the deck. Lets not forget that it is only 50 STEPS from the beach. That's less then a 30 SECOND walk!!! We are only a few hundred feet from the Trading Post to pick up last minute groceries, beach accessories or pizza and wings. They pretty much have everything you could need, which saves you from having to drive into Port St. Joe. Nationwide calling to anywhere in the 50 United States, Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands and to all of Canada so you can keep in touch with family.(cell service is not great in Cape San Blas)

I was afraid it sounded to good to be true!
I was amazed that I found this place at all. Most properties on The Cape are too big for 2 people. I read all the reviews, studied maps, researched the area and decided to go for it. I looked so forward to going but afraid there had to be a catch. I was thrilled to find it lived up to the reviews. From many of the reviews I expected it to be cramped but we had more than enough room with many baskets in kitchen and bedrooms for extra storage besides the closets and drawers. Hooks behind the doors to hang things. The sliding door in bathroom to create space for shelving. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you would need. The large South facing deck was ideal for the whole month of February as we could enjoy our coffee outdoors, even with temps in the 60s. Late afternoon when it became shaded, we had the back screened porch and the warm sun to watch the sunset. We could see and hear the surf on both porches. The walk to beach is as described. Down the steps and about 50 feet to the sand. The best part is that most everything you need is a short walk down the road. St. Joe Shrimp Company, Webers Little Donut Shop, The Trading Post (if they don't have it, you don't need it) Peachy's restaurant, Cape Coffee and Ice Cream and a liquor store. You can tell that much thought was invested in decorating and trying to utilize every inch of space. We had a great time walking the beach and there is a golf course within 10 miles . After making sure that it did indeed live up to it's description, we immediately reserved it for a month next year. The cottage was clean and decorated with beach decor and pleasing colors. You can tell that there was a lot of love invested in making this a relaxing retreat for their renters. The owner was responsive to any questions. We absolutely loved everything about Sailaway Cottage and are looking forward to next year already.
If you arrive at Sailaway Cottage late at night, as we did, you might be treated to the most beautiful starry sky you've ever seen, as we were, all the while hearing the waves of gulf just a few hundred yards away. Before you even set foot inside you know you're in a good place, but the cottage itself is warm and welcoming, a cozy and practical layout with thoughtful and artful touches that remind you that you're in a special place. Plus, you're only a few hundred yards from the St. Joe Shrimp Shrimp Company, so you can cook your own fresh seafood every night, and the Cape's bike trail is just across the street, so you can leave the car behind for a while a just get to know this beautiful area in a different way. The beach is beautiful, the solitude refreshing, and the folks we did meet were friendly and in love with this part of Florida. We spent hours looking for shells as if they were jewels, but the unexpected treasure was this place.
This was the first time in 30 years that my wife and I had been able to take a week's vacation together, just us, that wasn't based around a wedding or funeral, and Cape San Blas and Sailaway Cottage gave us the setting and inspiration for a wonderfully relaxing, enlivening, and unforgettable time, without a worry in the world. Thanks for making this little sanctuary available and for the loving care you so obviously put into it.
This is the best review!! I am so glad that it met all of your expectations and that you finally got some time away. I sincerely hope you come back, but don't wait 30 years again!
Wicked Nice Cottage
For the non Bostonians that’s a great review. Quaint, quiet, and clean. Easy access to a beautiful beach, walking access to the corner store for items you forgot or need. Owner is VERY responsive and the property is well cared for. We would recommend it to friends and visit again in instant. Fair warning the mosquitoes were quite active at dusk, that was the only issue we had with our visit. Just plan accordingly and enjoy your time at this cottage.
Thank you!! that was wicked nice. (I worked in Boston years ago!) lol I am so glad you had a good time.
Great tiny place. Fit our needs for a short vacation. Only issue was there is only Netflix's and roku in bedroom and living room. Small bedroom had only cable TV. Having never to have used Netflix's or roku it was very distressing and put a damper on our time at the beach.
I am so sorry that the Roku was so confusing for you, I wish you would have let me know when we spoke on the phone. I could have explained how to use it.
Great Stay Near the Beach
This quaint stay is a short walk from the beach with all of the amenities one would expect from a vacation house. The owner was very responsive and took care of a small issue promptly. I would recommend this stay if you are looking for a nice getaway in the Port. St. Joe area.
Thank you so much and please come back again.
St. Joseph Peninsula State Park was America's #1-Beach, in 2002. Scalloping in the St. Joseph Bay is amazing!
Cape San Blas, located at the southernmost tip of Florida's Great Northwest, is home to the #1 beach in the continental United States! What's so special about Cape San Blas?•No amusement parks or hi-rise condos
•No cell phones, pagers, or alarm clocks
•Almost no cars......very few people
It's what you don't have (or want) that makes this place special. Cape San Blas is a get-away...away from the noise...away from the crowds...away from the busy schedules, the telephones, the responsibilities. After a week of enjoying the simplest of pleasures, it's hard to go home.
