About Tanya Candia
When Xavier and Tanya Candia first saw it in 2004, the 400 year old stone house had been abandoned for more than 50 years and was in ruins. Today it has been completely rebuilt using the original materials and the finest craftsmanship. It is an oasis of peace and tranquility yet close to all of Umbria and Tuscany.
Tanya Candia purchased this Estate in 2004
Why Tanya Candia chose Perugia
It's a dream to spend your days basking in sunshine, swimming in the infinity pool overlooking the magnificent valley, or strolling through the orchards of this private, secluded, utterly peaceful ancient Italian villa. In the evening, to eat in one of the award-winning local restaurants, savoring local olive oil, truffles and wines. During the summer and autumn, to visit a fiesta or sagra in a nearby village where you can mingle with the local people and taste the best of Umbrian regional cuisine. To take the train to Florence for a day of sightseeing, or spend the day on the beaches of the Adriatic, yet be back in time for a leisurely dinner al fresco.
What makes this Estate unique
This house is one of the jewels of Umbria. Situated on a dramatic hillside, it boasts spectacular views. The Olivi Suite adjoins the Vigne Suite, and together they accommodate 10 - 12 people. Two additional bedrooms in the main house are also available for rental, for a total of 14-16 people. It's the perfect spot to relax, unwind, and still be very close to all the action. Even though we are not on an active fault zone, the house has been reconstructed using the safest, most reliable seismic engineering methods and materials.

Elegant home in beautiful Umbria countryside
We wanted a quiet place in the country for our ten day exploration of this beautiful and historic area. This was pretty close to perfect. Large rooms, very modern and adequate kitchen and a real shower (If you travelled in Europe you'll know how rare that is). Quiet, private and gorgeous views. All necessary information provided and greeted upon arrival by a pleasant, capable woman with very good English. Travelled the back roads to Gubbio, Montone, Assisi, Montepulciana, Perugia, Todi and many more, always retreating to the comfort of our home away from home. Highly recommended. Negatives: 20 min to a coin op do it yourself laundry; furnishings visually great but a little bit Spartan.
My husband and I visited Italy for the first time this month. We were fortunate enough to find this little gem in the Umbrian countryside. The home has been restored with love, in the most perfect location. It had everything we needed including proximity to all the villages we wanted to visit, including Assisi, Todi and Spoleto. It is a two hour drive from Roma, which made it the perfect getaway from the busyness of the big cities. There are many stores and great restaurants nearby, although we preferred to come home from touring around most evenings and make ourselves a meal in the fully stocked kitchen and sit outside with the most incredible view and watch beautiful sunsets every evening. We did treat ourselves out for dinner at a castle one night, just 20 mins away, and tried a restaurant Tanya recommended in Piccione. If you are looking for the perfect Italian getaway, we would highly recommend this incredibly quiet, beautiful location. We hope to return again in a couple years, to share this experience with our good friends.
The perfect location to relax and explore
If I could give this rental/location 6 stars I would. After spending two weeks working in Florence during the heat wave this summer, then a few days in the crowds in Venice, we knew we needed to find a place to relax and enjoy Italy away from the crowds. The villa is so beautifully and consciously restored and decorated, we instantly felt relaxed and welcomed. The infinity pool with the most exquisite view was a constant enjoyment throughout our stay. The view and sunsets are amazing and it's delightful to sit on your own patio with all the scents of the fresh lavender and roses sipping a glass of wine. We took small trips to the neighboring towns/ villages to sight see explore . Fatticiola Selvetica, the local town, was having its annual festival with food and music and dancing. We also caught a night of great music at the Umbrian Jazz festival in Perugia. Everything was so close and with Tanya's recommendations and insider tips we were able to navigate the area easefully and enjoyably. Tanya is the most gracious host! Simultaneously making us feel totally relaxed and at home while also being accessible for any questions we had. We would love to return!
Stunning views for an idyllic getaway
The one bedroom apartment we stayed in was perfect with an excellent kitchen and we ate all our meals out on the terrace which looked over the beautiful sunset every evening.
Definitely need a car for access.
Everyone was very helpful and friendly; when we arrived on Sunday afternoon, when most shops were shut, we were recommended to go to a great restaurant at the other end of the village (about a 10/15 minute drive) which had the most delicious food and friendly staff. Instantly felt myself relax.
Apartment was sparkling clean and perfect for our use.
Thank you for a lovely time.
May 2015 in Umbria
After dashing through Italy in Sep 2013 to catch a flight from Rome, we decided to return for a more leisurely visit. After a week in a hotel in Tuscany, the move to Villa Candia was a lovely change, as was the change in scenery in Umbria. A car is a must to get to the villa, but allows day trips as far afield as San Marino, or pick any other hilltop town. The Olivi Suite was just right for us (2) with bedroom, kitchen/dining/sitting and bathroom. Back in a brisk Aussie winter, another visit is lookin' good.
Sunny and snowy Christmas stay
I arrived on December 15 to bright sunny skies and relatively warm temperatures. The suite was very comfortable during the day and quite cozy at night when the temps dipped. The kitchen is perfectly equipped, and the bedroom has its own French doors that look out over the lovely valleys. I spent my time seeing all the "presepes" (Nativity scenes) in the little villages nearby, some traditional with statues, and others acted out by locals, complete with live sheep, oxen and even a baby "Jesus". I took a day trip to Florence which was easy by train, and another day trip to Gubbio to see the world's largest outdoor Christmas tree. Lunches and dinners with local residents were organized by the owners, adding to the special nature of the visit. The last two days it snowed - just enough to make it spectacularly beautiful. I can't wait to come back during the other seasons of the year.
Villa Candia is a 400-year-old manor house with a spectacular hillside location in Umbrian truffle country. A short drive takes you to medieval villages as well as major Umbrian cities including Assisi, Perugia, Gubbio, Spoleto or Orvieto. When you tire of sitting on the terrace, soaking up the sun at the infinity pool or visiting local wineries, you can easily drive to Sienna or Florence, or the beaches of the Adriatic.
