Standish House Rental Photos and Description

Elegant Historic Cottage On The Lake -lots Of Lake Views And Sheltered Porches.

The Little Gatsby House is a charming elegant treasure built in 1907, and still has some of it's original furnishings. Once you step over the threshold you feel like you are entering into the past. A time when life was simpler, slower, and more relaxing. This cottage has close proximity to everything, 100 feet of Lake frontage with beautiful views, peaceful surroundings, glorious sunsets, gentle breezes, and the call of the loons. The enclosed porches which surround the cottage on three sides provide warm and dry living conditions in case of inclement weather as well as an open-air environment when the weather is fine. They span two stories and provide lots of area to enjoy dining, games, sleeping, reading, or quiet conversation. Everywhere you look are beautiful views. The lake itself is so peaceful and private, you'll be happy just to sit on the shore with a good book and a cup of tea.

About Patty Taylor

After Eric worked as an Engineer for 25 years and Patty worked as a Systems Analyst/Manager for 29 years, they decided to change career paths and started their own Construction and Property Management Company. We would love to have you visit! Patty & Eric

Patty Taylor purchased this house in 1907

Why Patty Taylor chose Sebago Lake

Eric and Patty own the cottage next to this one and talked the owners into offering The Little Gatsby House to others so that they may enjoy the Lake cottage experience and build family memories to last a lifetime.

What makes this house unique

The Little Gatsby House has plenty of history. It was once the site of the ice house for the area. Ice was cut out of the lake, stored in sawdust, and loaded onto horse drawn carriages to be used in home refrigerators. It was once used as a boys camp called 'The Porches', where boys from 5 to 10 years of age came for the summer to escape the city life.

The Countess Da Gama (a descendent of the explorer 'Vasco Da Gama') and her son lived here during World War II.

2nd year staying at the "Gatsby" and it only gets better!!! The added TV area on the 2nd floor porch was a nice quiet retreat and Having the Trundle bed in the 2nd floor bedroom made it a great sleeping arrangement for little ones that want to be close to their parents. There is even a portable privacy divider that we brought in from the porch. All in all another wonderful week on the lake!!!!!.

The previous reviews say it all. This is the 2nd year that we have rented from Patty and Eric. They have done a remarkable job getting the Gatsby House ready for visitors. You really only have to pack a suitcase because everything else is provided. The house is so comfortable and the porches are awesome!! Everything is spotless. We enjoy the peacefulness of the lake but also enjoy the nearby shopping and PAPA"S ICE CREAM STORE!! YUM! YUM! Thank you Patty and Eric for another wonderful Maine vacation.

What a wonderful time we had. Two weeks of great fun in this spotlessly clean, peaceful, beautiful place where books abound and the kitchen is well stocked. We had a dinner party for 22 and needed only veggies from the local farmer and an array of fresh seafood from a nearby fish monger (a.k.a. road side stand). Sleeping quarters seem endless – take your choice, the solitude of one of the lovely bedrooms or the vast, seemingly open air space on the grand second floor porch. The dock, kayaks, canoe, and row boat make a cruise on the lake with its islands, rock formations and loons an easy outing. A few steps lead to the water and a sandy bottom where we all (ages 10 to 75) enjoyed swimming every day.

The Gatsby would be a grand historic villa on another continent. In Maine, The Gatsby is simply a camp. It’s an elegant, charming camp with all the conveniences of modern living. You get both turn of the 21st century modern amenities and turn of the 20th century old world charm. Two floors of porch area look out over the crystal clear waters of Watchic Lake and offer a near perfect vista of breathtaking sunsets. I say near perfect because the real perfect spot for viewing the sunset is on the bench at the edge of the lake – and what divine sunsets we saw!

The immediate area of Standish offers convenient shopping, places to eat and plenty to do. Patty provided wonderful, easy to use information on the local area. Standish is located about mid-way between the rocky coast of Maine (Portland its city, beaches galore and spectacular lighthouses) and the splendor of Mt. Washington in the White Mountains National Forest. We spent most days at the Gatsby enjoying the lake, some touring the sea shore and some climbing the mountains. I think that qualifies as the very best vacation. Thank you Patty and Eric, our new friends, for all you have done to make the Gatsby a fabulous, fun vacation destination. We hope to return again

Great House, Great Location

  • 5 of 5

My family had a fabulous vacation and loved staying at the Gatsby House! The location is perfect; right on the lake and in a quiet, secluded spot but only 5 minutes from the grocery store and things to do. The interior was spotless and comfortabe and Patty and Eric had thought of everything that we might need; there was laundry detergent, soap, towels, clean linens, etc. Such a treat when traveling with small children not to have to pack or buy everything. Kitchen was well stocked as well, living room has a new tv/dvd player and fast internet. Key for us was good, quality mattresses since we've stayed at houses with terrible beds. House is overall really interesting and fun to explore, especially if you like older homes with a lot of history. Exterior was great as well; lake is right out the back door and shallow with sandy area for small kids. Nice grassy front and back yard for playing. House is stocked with life preservers, rafts, etc. and has kayaks and row boat. Patty and Eric also provide an abundence of information on area attractions and activities including their favorite restaurants with menus. We did a day trip to Portland and one to Cornish where there are lots of cute antique stores and restaurants. Couldn't have asked for a better rental house for our week in Maine! We would definitely rent here again.
