About the Property
1300 sq. ft. cottage, 3 bdrm, 1 1/2 bath, with mountain & forest views
If you want true rugged Colorado mountain scenery and outdoor opportunities, this cottage is for you. This is not just another in-town neighborhood, with mowed lawns and neighbors circled all around you; this is private mountainside living where you see more critters than people. The cottage feels almost like a tree house, nestled up against tall pines...and looking down from the deck into a green Ponderosa pine forest.
And if you want to experience untouched national forest, you just walk up the trail at the top of the hill...and go for miles in the forest. Due north through the forest about 10/12 miles is Williams Lake and the beginnings of the Weminuche Wilderness. So you can hike and explore to your heart's content.
If's just a 10 minute drive to Chimney Rock for hiking and guided tours. Ten minutes in the other direction takes you to the edge of Pagosa Springs, with a wealth of sightseeing, great shops and restaurants, rafting or tubing on the San Juan River. Or you can indulge yourself in the relaxing, healthful hot springs on the riverside. The postcard-perfect little village has a spectacular view of the continental divide peaks that run from here westward to Durango. A 20-minute drive east from Pagosa takes you to Wolfcreek Pass, with great views and the earliest and best skiing in the state.
San Juan Cottage is just newly completed, and it is just now being offered for the first time for rental. The romantic, idyllic cottage is 1300 sq. ft, with 3 bedrooms and 1 1/2 baths. The large loft with king-size bed serves as master bedroom and offers gorgeous mountain views from huge windows at both ends of the cottage. The downstairs living area is surrounded by glass and is bright, airy and cheerful in any weather. From the living area you'll look down in any direction at forests or mountains...beautiful in every season. Sit out on the wrap-around deck and you'll be surrounded by birds and chipmunks. Walk through the pines on the property or on the nearby trails and you'll probably see deer or other forest creatures.
The cottage is fully air conditioned, in case of warmer summer temperatures. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you'll need; all linens and towels are provided. Everything you need is there...just bring yourself and experience real 'backwoods' Colorado relaxation and excitement.

Located between Pagosa Springs and Durango, this cottage places you close to a wide range of choices. Durango is an exciting small city that is packed with entertainment, cultural, shopping and sightseeing spots; it was chosen this year as one of Smithsonian Magazine's Top 20 Small Towns in the U.S. It offers amazing river rafting, hiking, and biking; and it's homebase for the narrow gauge train that travels to Silverton in the Continental Divide mountains. Pagosa Springs, on the other hand, is a charming, quaint little village with wonderful hot springs, incredible views, and the warmth/friendliness that only a tiny Colorado town can give. Pagosa is the gateway to a whole variety of daytrips in the mountains: Wolfcreek, Creede, Williams Lake and the Weminuche Wilderness...the largest wilderness area in the state of Colorado. Before you go to Pagosa you need to be warned that many of the current residents passed through there on vacation and decided right away to move to Pagosa. It's habit forming! And if you love historic sites, you're in luck. The cottage is near two of the most notable Pueblo ruin sites in the country. Chimney Rock--the Pueblo ruins recently designated a national monument--is just six miles from the cottage and offers a full day of hiking, guided tours of the ruins, and marveling at the scenery from the top of a splendid mountain peak. Mesa Verde is near Durango and is one of the most visited Pueblo ruins in the country.
Year Purchased: 2008
About: We're Glenda & Keith Huckabay of Tulsa, Oklahoma, where we've lived for 25 year...but we love Colorado and love exploring around in small Colorado towns and the Colorado mountains. We're both semi-retired now; Glenda managed large call centers until a couple of years ago, and I worked as an administrator in a Technical School. We now maintain a part-time business doing safety training video. We have two grown children and three grandchildren...fiercely loyal OSU fans.
Why Pagosa Springs, CO, USA:
We discovered the piece of land in Pagosa Springs in 2007 and fell in love with the spot. We love rugged, natural out-in-the-woods country, and that's what this spot offers. We didn't want the feel of a neighborhood, with mowed lawns and neighbors just over a fence. We wanted to be out where we could really feel like mountain folks...where real Colorado people lived. We built the cottage on the property during 2010 and 2011, and just completed little finish items during the summer of 2012. We love spending time there; it's a little bit of heaven there for us, partly because of the wonderful climate and partly because it truly is a peaceful, natural woodsy retreat for us to escape to. The cottage is located at the entrance to the San Juan National Forest; just climb on up the hill to the back of our property and you're in the forest. You'll be amazed at the rugged beauty as you climb the gently sloping trails going up from the cabin. We think it's some of the most beautiful countryside you'll find anywhere in the area ! And you can hike and explore for many miles north in the San Juan. Due north from the cottage you reach the Weminuche Wilderness, the largest wilderness area in the state, if not the nation. It's wonderful country!
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Our cottage is between Pagosa Springs and Durango, which places it ideally for all kinds of day trips and excursions. Go west to Durango for all kinds of restaurants, shopping and sight-seeing. Drive six miles and visit Chimney Rock. Go East and visit Pagosa, then branch out from there to Wolfcreek, Creede, or a wide variety of daytrips into the mountains. The combined areas around Durango and Pagosa offer an incredible variety of experiences and sightseeing.
