Overview

About the property

Whole house rental, 5 Bedrooms, 4.5.5 Bathrooms (Sleeps 10+)

Dragon Fly, as it is affectionately called, is an amazingly private, quiet, and serene luxury home located on the North East Cape Fear river, about 30 minutes from Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach.

CHECKIN time is 4:00 PM or later on the date of arrival,

and CHECKOUT time is by 10:00 AM on date of departure.

We need this 6 hour time frame, so that we may make the property ready for each new guest.

Built in 2002 by the current owner as a vacation home, this home is the ultimate getaway. A brand new cooks' kitchen, massive deck and screened in porch face the river. A projector + 10' screen for screening films help to make this place very special. The home boasts 5 bedrooms and 3.5.5 bathrooms, with an extra large jacuzzi and walk in shower in the master. Nearly every piece of furniture is antique (circa 1900) and most of the art is from local artists. On the ground floor there is a full pool table, iron gym, and heavy boxing bag. Bring a boat, canoe or kayak to enjoy the river, or take a quiet walk around the adjacent pond to view the many animals and foliage that call this region home. Ever seen a woodpecker a foot and a half tall? How about Venus Flytrap, carnivorous plants that only grow within a 75 mile radius of our house and nowhere else in the entire world!

Throw horse shoes, or enjoy sitting by the Asian fire pit as you grill steaks over a real hardwood fire. A massive porch fronts the house and faces the river, of which a section is screened in.

We do not have good TV reception or Internet service, due to our secluded location. Actually, we hope that our guests really enjoy being 'unplugged' while here, off the grid! After all, why come to an Eco-paradise to sit inside and watch TV?

The property comes with a caretaker in the event of questions or additional needs. Catering can be arranged.

Thank you very much for your interest.

About Cliff Davis

We are a family from this area. My people settled in this area in 1640, emmigrating from Scotland, England and Wales nearly 400 years ago. We built this home in 2002 for our personal use, and went to great lengths to use only the finest building materials, sparing no expense to create an environment that is top quality. I grew up in this area, swam in this river as a child as did all my forbearers, and wanted to create a legacy property that my family will continue to enjoy for another 400 years. Permanent quality is what we enjoy... Only the best!

Cliff Davis purchased this house in 2002

Why Cliff Davis chose Southern Coast

This area is an Eco-paradise, great bird watching, a pristine rural riverside setting with wonderful beaches nearby (Wrightsville, Topsail, and Hempstead). In this day of hustle and bustle, it is still nice to know that a dirt lane still exists that can transport you to another place in time.

What makes this house unique

Several things make this location so unique and desirable.

Although we are deep in the woods, fronting a gorgeous river, we are only six minutes from Interstate 40. The nearby town of Burgaw has all the charm of a beautiful southern village, antiques and old timey stores, yet we are only 30 minutes fron the bustling seaport of Wilmington, sometimes referred to as a mineature Charleston, S.C. Our area practically oozes with ancient cypress trees, hanging Spanish moss and ante-bellum charm.

Notes:
The fire pit in the front yard, next to the river, is wonderful. We imported large river rocks from the mountains of N.C., that can seat 16. Wood is available to build campfires. Also we have andirons, grate and a huge steel mesh grill surface to cook on the open fire. This is where we cook steaks over real hardwood, roast oysters and have our pig pickings. Probably my most favorite place to sit on cool nights, eating marshmallows and telling ghost stories.

Spacious 5 bedroom home on the river.

Close to beaches, great dining, and shopping.

Cliff the owner and his cousin who helps with his property are the nicest people.

Owner's Response: It was a true pleasure to host you and your folks in our river home. The number of bedrooms gives a variety of spaces to enjoy comfort and privacy throughout the house. One of my favorite spots is up in the "coop", the cupola bedroom with a 360 degree view. As for beaches, we are just a short hop to Wrightsville beach, Surf City and Topsail beach. For an old fashioned beach experience I love hanging out near the sundry shop at Topsail.... so laid back. Like 1950 all over again. Good food abounds, with the utterly unique and fabulous "Hollands" seafood restaurant just 3 miles away. Steve Hollands' Cajun cooking is FABULOUS! No kidding. His "Cajun Maddness" is to die for, a gustatory delight. So glad you got to meet one of my many cousins, Herbert, who helps me manage the property as concierge, making it a fun experience for everyone. My grandmother was the youngest of nine children, so I have literally hundreds of cousins in the Burgaw area. Quite nice for a family reunion. We even use the house for some of our family gatherings from time to time, albeit on a smaller basis. We enjoy the campfire pit so much. It pleases me to see other people enjoy the house as much as we do. Please spread the word, and know that we look forward to having more nice friends and visitors like you come to visit our secluded piece of paradise. We are slightly off the radar, and proud of it. Sincerely thanking you and all your family, Cliff, Herb and our entire family

Perfect home in a perfect location

  • 5 of 5

Thanks so much for letting us stay in your home, we absolutely loved our time there. The view from the master is absolutely captivating. We enjoyed the peace, quite and tranquility. This home is far enough away from the hustle and bustle but yet close enough to civilization for everything you may need. Thanks again.

Very nice house overlooking the water but should have been told it was off a dirt road

  • 4 of 5

Great weekend away and nice house. Wish I would have known that it was down a 10min dirt road. Also found it weard that there where no window coverings in master bathroom.

Owner's Response: Thanks for staying in our “secluded river retreat,” secluded enough that there is no need for curtains in the master bedroom suite that faces the river, or any other room in the house for that matter. No immediate neighbors allows for superb views of the natural river setting. Occasionally a passing deer or possum gets traumatized when they get a glimpse of a visitor, but I suppose that is the risk and random joy of nature. Yikes! As for being on a dirt lane, we clearly state such in our directions. About half of our lane is sandy, the rest is nicely covered in gravel, and it is only one mile down the road until you get to our house. A nice peaceful ride through the forest. Thank goodness for the lack of asphalt. The wildlife would surely object!

Family wedding housing.

  • 4 of 5

Great quiet location to get away and relax. Beds are very comfortable. House is well kept. Fully equity kitchen is spacious and well organized. Little girls loved the goose (they named "mother goose")at entry door. Projection TV for their movies made it a special event for them. The crows nest bedroom became their favorite hideout room. Would recommend for family retreat. Cliff is quick to respond and works with guests for odd arrival times. Adults and kids love the shower/bath jet tub, rain showers and spacious vanities. Very accommodating.

The Perfect Getaway - Isolated Nature

  • 5 of 5

The travel from Chapel Hill, NC felt like a fairly short drive. The one mishap that did occur that may happen for future tenants was that there was a similar address nearby and all that differentiated the two was a space, so for example if the address was "123 Fairview Dr," I accidentally typed in "123 Fair view Dr." - so I hope this doesn't happen to anyone! But yes, onto the house - it was a 3 floor house with an open-view, scenic basement area that contained a nice pool table, canoeing, and fishing items. The house was very spacious and the views from the house were spectacular. The house contained all the essentials you would need, a nice kitchen, good rooms, spacious living room with a projector, a nice netted porch area to get a feeling of the outside without having to commit to going outside, just about everything except wifi; in all honesty, the no wifi was probably the best part of the trip, everyone just enjoyed each others' companies rather than being busy on their phones. No wifi really helped immerse our group with the beautiful scenic views around us. But aside from that, the house was roughly 40ish minutes away from Wilmington Beach, not a bad drive at all. There were very nice restaurant in the area as well.

Last but not least, of course, was our host - Cliff and his son (I hope this is correct). They both kept in contact with me before and throughout the stay to make sure that I was as comfortable as possible. Cliff made a few suggestions to in regards to the house, places to eat, and how to maximize my enjoyment while staying at the house. I do recommend this to anyone who wants to get away and just enjoy what nature offers.

I want to thank Cliff and his son a whole bunch for all that they did to make my stay enjoyable.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your kind remarks. We always enjoy hosting people who like the out-of-doors as much as we do. Being away from it all certainly has its advantages, even young people who are completely convinced that they are addicted to their cellular devices. Ha! Time off the grid means time together. Again, thank you very much. Cliff Davis

The property was in good condition, and plenty of room for our group of 12.

We were happy with the location and space. Everything was well broke -in and we thought we may have been the first tenants in a while. Our family had a comfortable stay and enjoyed the beautiful location.

Dragon Fly is situated in a peaceful, rural setting that is an eco-paradise! We are located directly on the Northeast Cape Fear river, and are a short 35-40 minute drive from some of the most beautiful beaches in North Carolina. The ultimate getaway for nature lovers.

We are only 5 miles outside of Burgaw, N.C. Burgaw is a small charming town, the seat of Pender County, the last of 100 counties to be created in North Carolina.

Our town also happens to be the movie location for the current CBS hit show, 'Under The Dome.' The movie studio is in Wilmington.

Burgaw is the quaintest small town, like going back in time to 'Mayberry' with Andy and Barney. It is on the Civil War Trail, and boasts the oldest railway station in North Carolina, built circa 1850.
