The cabin is located just 1 1/2 miles from the Park entrance. It is surrounded by large sugar and ponderosa pines, cedar, sequoias and dogwood trees. Walk 2 3/4 miles up an old wagon road and be standing next to the Grizzly Giant, the largest Sequoia in the Mariposa Grove of Yosemite National Park. Walk down the highway less than 200 feet to Big Creek and do some of the best fishing in the Sierras. Bear Cub Den - Pappa Bear is a licensed two story house which can be rented for groups from 2 to 10. We have Dish Network, coffee maker, fully equipped kitchen and all the things you would have if it was your home. We have two Master Bedrooms, each with their own private bathroom and refrigerator. Outside there is an area with a picnic table, BBQ, and space for the family. See the pictures below for must see places and activities in the local area. The owner is also extremely knowledgeable in flora, fauna, geology, trails, and historic facts. He loves questions!! Your stay promises to be a charming mountain experience.
The first time I visited Yosemite was 1954 with my mother. I fell in love with the park . I visited many times in the next 47 years and every time I went thru Fish Camp, with it's beautiful pond, trees and mountains, I said to myself 'Some day I want to buy a home here.' In 1991 I did just that. I continued to live in Southern Ca. and came to Fish Camp as often as possible. In the mean time I purchased two other home in Fish Camp and in 2010 I retired from my life as a licensed clinical social worker and came to Fish Camp for most of the year. In those many years I hike, camped, and studied the flora, fauna, geology, inn keepers, native americans and trails of Yosemite. I am very knowledgeable of the Park and am available for questions at any time.
John Luther purchased this cabin in 1991
As stated above, I love Fish Camp and it's surroundings. It is a marvelous place to relax and get centered from all the hustle and bustle of the civilized world. Because man made a decision to end Yosemite Park a mile and a half north of here, nature did not. In the near surrounding there are domes, giant sequoias, creeks, water falls etc. that rival any 'inside' the park.
The first time I entered Bear Cub Den-Pappa Bear, I fell in love with it. The beautiful wood work, fireplace made mostly of local rock, and near location to Yosemite stole my heart. Being only two houses from Big Creek with it's beautiful sounding water and great trout is a definite plus. The people of Fish Camp are also very friendly and helpful. Something you may not be used to in other locations.
We had a marvelous time. Definitely would like to stay here again. The cabin was perfectly cozy. Loved the double fireplaces. We had a great talk with the owner when we arrived. He was engaging and helpful. Wonderful Wonderful. Thanks John (you rock!)
Location is great, only 2 miles away from south entrance to Yosemite. Lodging is big, kitchen well equipped. Furnitures old but well maintained and clean. Just 2 things to know: there is no WiFi, and the heating system in the lower bedroom is very loud if you go in cold seasons
This was the just right distance for a late arrival from the Fresno airport and an early start to exploring Yosemite. We found the directions for where to find the lockbox on the deck confusing in the dark and it took sometime to track it down. We had a nice number of beds to spread out.
Great location, cabin was very clean and everything we wanted for our very short stay.
The cabin was comfortable and just what we needed after a long day out hiking and enjoying Yosemite! John was very knowledgeable about the park and the area. He offered to answer any questions we had about geology, plants, history of the area. We had a wonderful stay! Thanks John:)
Our location is 1 1/2 miles to the entrance for Yosemite National park. We are a short walk of 2 3/4 miles to the Grizzly Giant located in the Mariposa grove of giant sequoias. There are also many hikes to old logging rail grades with ancient trestles and ties Some of the best fishing in the Sierras is 200 feet from the Cabin in Big Creek.
