About Deb Murrell

The Hayward area has been a big part of our family's vacation life since our kids were babies, both in summer and in winter. We purchased a cabin in 1998 and have enjoyed every minute we can spend on Moose Lake and in the area.

In 2014 Mike and Deb moved from Wisconsin to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for a job change for Mike, who now teaches at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. Deb is a retired elementary and middle school teacher. Daughter Sarah, a pediatric dentist, married Karl, an orthodontist, up in the Hayward area and they are now the parents of our first two grandchildren. (There are many dental discussions when we get together with them!) Son Luke works for UTC Aerospace Systems in the Twin Cities and is working on his Masters; his wife, Megan, with her Masters in Illustration, is growing her illustration and fine art business while also working at Orange Theory.

Deb Murrell purchased this cabin in 2010

Why Deb Murrell chose Hayward

Our small family cabin is next door, and we became good friends with the former owners of The Otter Cabin through the years. When they retired to Florida, we purchased the cabin from them for future family possibilities. We are the only two cabins at the end of our road, and this also helps us maintain some control over the peace and quiet we'd always enjoyed on our part of the lake. We remodeled the cabin, purchased new furnishings, and started renting the summer of 2012.

What makes this cabin unique

The Otter Cabin's neighbors are the lake, the forest, and our small family cabin. We only see a few lights at night across the water, and, most summers, our neighborhood family of otters is spotted swimming past the dock. There is a good boat landing close by and plenty of parking space for your trailer at the cabin.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"We had a wonderful time exploring the lake looking for fishing spots.

Really enjoyed the fire pit in the evening - thanks for the dry wood. The stars at night are incredible.

Thanks for the great week."

Special Cabin

  • 5 of 5

The Otter Cabin on Moose Lake near Hayward, WI, was the perfect spot for our time away for some well-needed R&R. The cabin is beautifully decorated with much thought to every detail. It is so cozy & comfy with everything needed to feel & function like it is your own. The hummingbirds feeding just outside the big dining picture window were fascinating to watch every mealtime. Deer running through the yard kept our dog Chewie on alert! Phil & Chewie even got to see a bear on their morning walk. This was not part of our to-do list, however! The dock & pier were our favorite spots for gazing at the beautiful lake & forest surroundings & catching a few fish. Unfortunately, the evening mosquitos outnumbered our fish! The weather couldn't have been better, with only one small thunderstorm. The host/owner Deb is just wonderful & a real pleasure to have met her & also her dog Jackson, the world's friendliest & fun-loving dog! There is much to do in the area & in Hayward, but this time we mostly kept it pretty simple with just a few fun excursions. Thanks again, Deb (& Mike, who we didn't meet), for providing such a special place for us & other lucky guests. Also, Deb, for your many kindnesses, & making our vacation a great time with good memories.

Beautiful, quiet, and remote location. The cabin was very clean and the kitchen well stocked. It was awesome to have a boat landing near by, (within walking distance). The dock and chairs by the lake were a great place to relax. It was nice to have the satellite TV and wi-fi too.

Relaxing in comfort!

  • 5 of 5

What a lovely cabin! It was spotless, charming, and so inviting (as well as Deb, who greeted us upon walking up to the cabin). What a welcome sight after a long drive in! Don't expect to get any cell signal on the way and while you're up there- but that's where the landline being available was ideal, and so was the internet. I was delighted by the drawer full of local brochures, including a map of the lake, which was so fun exploring! We brought our own boat, which has a launch practically next door- so convenient. The week went fast! Spent a day seeing Bayfield, and spent another in Hayward. The rest of the trip was spent relaxing and fishing. The Chippewa River that flows into Moose Lake, gave us our best luck (16" smallmouth & 28" musky). We were looking for panfish, perch and walleye, and were surprised how fun the musky and crappies were to catch! Overall, we had a wonderful vacation we won't soon forget! Thanks again, Deb and Mike!

Great stay on a quiet and peaceful lake

  • 5 of 5

We are long time renters of vacation homes and the North Woods is our favorite area, by far. Of all our stays, The Otter Cabin ranks in the top. The property is quiet and secluded, with quiet roads to take walks and ride bicycles. It felt like we were in a campground with private roads, all to ourselves. Our dogs loved the islands throughout Moose Lake, as a place to take a break from fishing, for running and swimming. And nearby Folsom Island was their favorite by far. The property is well kept, clean, and has all the conveniences of home. My only suggestion would be a small clothesline for drying wet towels. If you are looking for a quiet place, close to nature, that is dog friendly, clean, and convenient, this is the place. We loved The Otter Cabin and look forward to returning.

By the way, forgot to mention one of the highlights of our trip. We were eating breakfast in front of the picture window when a very large black bear strolled by and sat down in front of the window. Magnificent!

Excellent cabin! Its very cute & clean. Deb is wonderful. This was our second time here at the cabin and we can't say enough how relaxing it is there. Our dog loves it there too. Weather was perfect. Fishing was very good caught walleye, bluegill & crappie. One day alone caught our limit in 2 hours! Took a day trip to Park Falls to St. Croix Custom Rods & another day to Hayward to eat lunch & shop main street. Can't wait to go back.

Journey into the Chequamegon National Forest and discover the beautiful nine mile long waters of Moose Lake. The lake reaches depths up to 32 feet and is fed by three rivers and many springs. A 'Class A' musky lake, both the elusive musky and the walleye provide sport in this healthy root beer-colored flowage. Bass and pan fishing are also fun for all ages.

Canoeing, kayaking, boating, water skiing/tubing, and swimming are additional favorite past times on the lake. The area is also popular for its miles of fat tire biking and hiking trails and for its many golf courses.

Moose Lake is located 25 miles east of Hayward, Wisconsin. The Hayward area has much to offer.... fine dining and entertainment, 7 golf courses, biking/hiking trails, the Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame, the LCO Casino, and shopping to name a few. Special Events include the Musky Festival, LCO Honor the Earth Powwow, Lumberjack World Championships, Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival, and the Moose Lake Festival.
