About Deb Murrell

The Hayward area has been a big part of our family's vacation life since our kids were babies, both in summer and in winter. We purchased a cabin in 1998 and have enjoyed every minute we can spend on Moose Lake and in the area.

In 2014 Mike and Deb moved from Wisconsin to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for a job change for Mike, who now teaches at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. Deb is a former elementary and middle school teacher. Daughter Sarah, a pediatric dentist, married Karl, an orthodontist, up in the Hayward area and they are now the parents of our first grandchild. (There are many dental discussions when we get together with them!) Son Luke works for UTC Aerospace Systems in the Twin Cities; his wife, Megan, is finishing her Masters through the Savannah College of Art and Design.

Deb Murrell purchased this cabin in 2010

Why Deb Murrell chose Northwest

Our small family cabin is next door, and we became good friends with the former owners of The Otter Cabin through the years. When they retired to Florida, we purchased the cabin from them for future family possibilities. We are the only two cabins at the end of our road, and this also helps us maintain some control over the peace and quiet we'd always enjoyed on our part of the lake. We remodeled the cabin, purchased new furnishings, and started renting the summer of 2012.

What makes this cabin unique

The Otter Cabin's neighbors are the lake, the forest, and our small family cabin. We only see a few lights at night across the water, and, most summers, our neighborhood family of otters is spotted swimming past the dock. There is a good boat landing close by and plenty of parking space for your trailer at the cabin.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"We had a wonderful time exploring the lake looking for fishing spots.

Really enjoyed the fire pit in the evening - thanks for the dry wood. The stars at night are incredible.

Thanks for the great week."

Wonderful cabin for a getaway. It is new, very clean and well appointed. We loved the solitude! Deb is great to work with, very generous. Thanks for sharing! Hopefully we'll be able to enjoy this sweet cabin again next year.

relaxing getaway

  • 5 of 5

Otter cabin was a delightful weekend escape. We loved being able to bring our dog-who had a fantastic time as well :) The lake is gorgeous, pristine, and quiet. There are nearby trails and wildlife. The firepit was great at night and the stargazing was excellent.

Would highly recommend!

Property great, owners even better

  • 5 of 5

The property is ideal, clean & location is fabulous but really.......we stayed here, went out on the lake at night. As humiliating as it is to admit we got ourselves lost very late at night. The owners stood out on the dock with flashlights and helped us find our way back. Finding an amazing property to stay at is usually easy to find but finding people like that is unique. We could not thank them enough. Very supportive and incredibly great people.

perfect cabin

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a week in mid September and were super satisfied. The cabin is at the end of a road with only one other cabin so it's really secluded and quiet. It was clean, and comfortable. We appreciated the comfortable furniture after sitting in a boat all day. So many thoughtful nice touches it's hard to remember them all! A well stocked kitchen, TV with dish, nice picture window, easy walk down to the dock, and a nice garage to store our kayaks out of the elements when they weren't being used. Nice fire pit with plenty of dry wood. Easily the nicest cabin we've stayed in and we've stayed in probably a dozen different ones in the last 20 years. Our dog also loved spending time with us and that was really appreciated!

The lake is big and beautiful. With the repairs to the dam ongoing the water level was down 2+ feet which made things challenging and we couldn't get everywhere. We caught no fish from the dock like others have but it sure is peaceful down there.

Fishing was tough the first few days until we found a few hot spots and then at dusk we would catch perch, blue gill, crappie, bass, and some walleye. Caught a few smallmouth and even fought a large musky to the boat before it spit the lure, very exciting. Most luck was with crawlers on a jig. Caught the musky on a black bucktail with chrome spinner but later found bucktails with orange spinner is effective.

Didn't see much wildlife, some deer and turkey.

Copper Falls state park is amazing and worth the hour drive. Just spectacular.

Ate at Louie's Landing, really good. Y-Pines for Friday walleye, also very good. And Farmstead Creamery and Café about 8 miles west is worth the drive. Unique menu, super fresh, cool place.

Deb was super friendly and helpful and their dog Jackson was cute. All things considered a 9 out of 10. If the water level was normal easily a 10. Will definitely stay again when we go back "up north".

Owner's Response: We are glad to hear you had such a good week and enjoyed a wide variety of activities. Fortunately, we've been told the dam rebuilding project is scheduled to be completed by December 2015 and the lake will be full once again for the 2016 season. Thank you for choosing The Otter Cabin on Moose for your northwoods vacation.

Excellent!

  • 5 of 5

I've stayed in Otter Cabin twice now, and I've not written a review because others have already said all that I could say--great amenities, great host, great cabin, great spot. I've vacationed at Moose Lake since I was a child, and since my family cabin is not in good repair, I'm grateful to have found this substitute. I'll return.

Journey into the Chequamegon National Forest and discover the beautiful nine mile long waters of Moose Lake. The lake reaches depths up to 32 feet and is fed by three rivers and many springs. A 'Class A' musky lake, both the elusive musky and the walleye provide sport in this healthy root beer-colored flowage. Bass and pan fishing are also fun for all ages.

Canoeing, kayaking, boating, water skiing/tubing, and swimming are additional favorite past times on the lake. The area is also popular for its miles of fat tire biking and hiking trails and for its many golf courses.

Moose Lake is located 25 miles east of Hayward, Wisconsin. The Hayward area has much to offer.... fine dining and entertainment, 7 golf courses, biking/hiking trails, the Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame, the LCO Casino, and shopping to name a few. Special Events include the Musky Festival, LCO Honor the Earth Powwow, Lumberjack World Championships, Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival, and the Moose Lake Festival.
