About Jeff and Debra
We are about to celebrate 40 years of marriage, have six adult children and are entering into the years of grand parenting and retirement. Having lived in several states, north and south, we love Virginia best.
Jeff and Debra purchased this House in 2014
Why Jeff and Debra chose Culpeper
Adjacent to a Mom and Pop type store, this farmhouse caught our eye on the drive to Culpeper. When it came on the market for sale, we were immediately interested and there were 8 offers in two days. We are so glad to have this old house, which was already restored when we bought it, kudos to the former owners.
What makes this House unique
Such a sweet blend of old and new, some open rooms, and some smaller rooms, each with its own purpose, some for gathering together and some for drawing away for privacy. The floor plan is charming and old fashioned, but some walls have been removed to create a more modern openness. The house is quiet, though relatively close to the road and near town. The property is more narrow across the front and very deep in the back, with a bit of woods to walk through and an open picnic area in the back.

Our stay was quiet and peaceful. The rental home was very clean and had everything we needed as well as plenty of room for our family. The home was close to dining and shopping and a reasonable distance from Washington D.C. points of interest. The owner was very personable and attentive. We recommend this home to anyone visiting the Northern Virginia area.
Everything was great. Our flight was delayed so we arrived at 4.30am! With two little kids, we were exhausted and the house was so welcoming. The lights were on and the directions to get in were easy! We were able to get a good night’s rest in the super comfy beds. The house is extremely clean, has everything you need, and made our trip (cousin’s wedding) enjoyable. Thank u!
We rented Old Blue while attending a family wedding nearby. The house was clean, and well stocked with everything we needed (and more). Thank you for all of the nice details and extras that made our stay wonderful!
WOW... this was EXTRA and then some!
Old Blue was beyond my expectations! I have rented from VRBO for years and this stay, these owners and this home by far exceeded my very high standards. Old Blue had old charm and elegance with updated amenities. The kitchen had everything we needed including but not limited to sugar, tea, oil, mustard, etc.... Without a doubt, we will use this property again and cannot wait to plan another trip. Rarely do I stay in the same place twice.... I will be staying here again.
Janell, Thank you for being excellent guests, for you appreciation of our home and for leaving it in top shape! We certainly enjoyed hosting you all and hope that you will stay at Old Blue again. We highly recommend you to other hosts.
Old Blue is a wonderful home to stay in and spend time with family, proximity to all the wonderful historic locations has made it a great experience.
Thank you, Kellie. We enjoyed having you as guests and thank you for taking great care of Old Blue.
perfect Old Blue
Old Blue is wonderfully restored with a nice blend of old and new. The house is also very neat and clean, with much thought and consideration given to the needs and comfort of guests. The owners are friendly and very prompt and responsive with information. The location near Culpeper was perfect for our family of 6 attending a wedding nearby, and we enjoyed exploring the town and the beautiful Virginia countryside.
Julie was the perfect guest-the kind that all hosts wish for. She was very polite and respectful and left our house immaculate.
Julie, thank you so much! Guests like you are a breath of fresh air and an encouragement for us to keep our doors open to guests. I wish you all the best!
Culpeper, Virginia is an awesome little town with a fascinating history. The insight of the Culpeper Renaissance team has done wonders in restoring Davis Street to a trendy, nostalgic area with great food and a myriad of little shops.
There are two breweries in town, and nearby wineries include Old House, Prince Michel, Gray Ghost, Molon Lave and Magnolia, but drive a bit further for winery choices galore. Belmont Distillery is not far, where they make moonshine legally. Old House Vineyard also has a distillery.
Check out the Museum of Culpeper History for a peek into what went on here before us. Don't forget the Graffiti House in Brandy Station, on whose walls, countless Civil War soldiers from both sides drew artwork with charcoal from the fire. The graffiti was hidden under layers of paint and wall paper and was recently discovered and opened for the public to see. Cedar Mountain Battlefield is here for you to stroll through, with informative markers about the battle. The largest Cavalry Battle on North American soil was fought at Brandy Station. The Wilderness and Chancellorsville battlefields are right down Route 3 toward Fredericksburg. Fredericksburg battlefield also has a great museum. Bull Run Battlefield is not far, in Manassas.
Did you know that George Washington was appointed official surveyer of Culpeper County at the age of 17?
You can check the schedule for Commonwealth Park to possibly catch a horse show.
We have rivers for swimming, canoeing-the Hazel River and Rappahanock are in Culpeper County.
Mount Pony is the audiovisual branch of the National Library of Congress and stores and preserves old movies. Check their schedule online and make a reservation to enjoy an old film in their vintage theater at no charge.
Every restaurant on Davis Street is fantastic. I suggest, if you want to be frugal, to try their lunch menus. Raven's Nest is our local favorite coffee shop on Davis Street.
When you are on Davis Street, make sure to stop at the historic train depot. The Culpeper Tourism and Visitor Center is located inside the depot so you can find brochures and things to do in the area.
If you like the mountains, I suggest a day trip to Skyline Drive. There are plenty of hiking trails to fantastic viewpoints, waterfalls and cascades...it's beautiful. The Skyline Drive runs along the Blue Ridge, offering fantastic views of the valleys. In the fall, there are lots of festivals, plenty of crisp apples to purchase, and pumpkins to pick. It's a glorious season in Virginia.
