About the property

Luxury 3bd/3ba+loft on the slope at Kirkwood Ski Resort

Reindeer Games is a stunning luxury timber and stone design, 2200 sq. ft, 2-story, 3 bed/3 bath + loft Swedish themed town home at Kirkwood Ski Resort (big mountain skiing/riding with a small town attitude). While enjoying your stay at Reindeer Games it’s a quick walk to everything: the chair lift (#6 Cornice Chair is 5 min walk), the Kirkwood Mountain Village with its restaurants and stores. Everything is less than 10 minutes walking!!

Kirkwood Ski Resort is the Tahoe destination for those who want the best and the most snow... in fact, it is ranked #3 globally with respect to total annual snowfall ( 700"/year) and was recently acquired by Vail Resorts. The most snowfall in the Tahoe region combined with 7,800' base elevation means Kirkwood always has the deepest base and usually very good cover until the end of April.

The town home itself is warm and welcoming - perfect for the adult get away - or some quality time with family.

Enjoy your apres ski hot chocolate in the great room, with stone gas fireplace and 24' ceilings. There is a sectional couch big enough for 8 adults to comfortably enjoy the fireplace or watch a movie on the 60" LED TV. You will also find the large dining area and the well-appointed, open layout, gourmet kitchen makes the house very social and inviting. Seated at the kitchen bar is the favorite place to rehash the days skiing over some Charcuterie and a glass of wine. Throw the days GoPro footage on the big screen and watch the run of the day!

There are two bedrooms on the main floor, each with a Queen sized bed and an en suite bathroom. Upstairs you will find the master bedroom suite with a king bed and a luxurious master bath with a jetted tub for two and a separate large travertine shower. There is a second full entertainment system with a 46' Samsung TV in the master bedroom.

The master suite is adjacent to the loft: which has another living area with a double sofa bed, a daybed that unfolds to accommodate two twin mattresses adjacent to each other (size of a King bed), and a home office (with printer, LCD monitor, keyboard and mouse) - perfect for those who need to get work done while up in the mountains ! There is also a 40" LG LED TV in the loft for the kids to watch Netflix on.

This home sleeps up to 12 and is ideal for two large families or three smaller families or three couples. Additionally, there is heated garage with parking for 2 cars and ski racks, laundry inside the unit and a mud room for ski jacket and boot storage at the end of your day on the slopes.

There are several nearby options for food and drinks. Closest is the Cornice Grill right across from Chair 6. Your basic pub fare with a retooled menu for 2014- good for an apres ski snack. The Wall Restaurant is in the Mountain Village near chair #5. This is the most high end dining experience at Kirkwood serving California cuisine with a decent wine selection. Newest, and Vail's first initiative, is the K-Bar. The K-Bar is a warm wooden apres-ski spot with floor to ceiling glass walls standing in the very center of the Mountain Village. A mile away where Highway 88 meets Kirkwood Meadows Dr is my personal favorite, the Kirkwood Inn. This is a historic log cabin that serves up some good steaks, ribs, and salads at reasonable prices. But get there early for dinner as it's very popular with families ! Finally, past the Mountain Village over by the General Store there is 7800- the only bar in Kirkwood open late night. 7800 is known for its reasonable prices, decent food, Friday night Karaoke (9PM start), and live bands on Saturday nights.

Those who are not wanting to be on the slopes there are a variety of other activities at Kirkwood or nearby- including tobogganing, dog sledding, zip lining, cross country skiing and snow shoeing in the tranquil meadows and foothills. There is also nearby access to the back country.

Summer at Kirkwood is highly underrated- most days consist of deep blue cloudless skies, temps in the low 70s range with a light cooling breeze in the afternoon. Activities include lift serviced Downhill Mountain Biking (trail was significantly improved summer 2014), rock climbing, hiking, trout fishing and boating on nearby Caples Lake and Silver Lake. Just past the Recreation Center there are tennis courts (one with basketball hoops) and a playground. My personal favorite summer activity is s short hike to the Potholes- these stunning natural swimming holes are formed by the water from Silver Lake cascading down rock slabs forming pools and small waterfalls. They are perfect for a picnic with the family. It's 5 miles away on and only a short hike in from Hwy 88. While there are many other longer and more challenging hikes and climbs closer to Kirkwood I don't think any can compare to the natural rugged beauty and uniqueness of the Potholes.

About Jon

I was born in Sweden but grew up in Toronto, Canada and have been skiing and snowboarding all my life. I moved to San Francisco in 2001 and fell in love with the Bay Area.

Jon purchased this chalet in 2009

Why Jon chose Kirkwood

I love the skiing and boarding up at Kirkwood, it can't be beat for the diverse terrain and great powder. For convenience the location of the home, just 5 minutes walking from chairs 5 and 6, means you get to spend you days maximizing your ski time or unwinding instead of planning. And on a powder day you can even ski home right to the front door!

What makes this chalet unique

Reindeer Games has a very Scandinavian feel influenced by my Swedish heritage (the former head of the condo Association called it the "ABBA House"). All of the taxidermy with the exception of the Mule Deer Antler Chandelier is imported from Sweden. Please note that no Lego pieces were harmed in the making of the wall mounted Lego deer head !!

Had a blast!!!

  • 5 of 5

Jon's communication was excellent and the place was clean and well equipped, I'd definitely recommend this property to my friends. Kirkwood is very quiet in the summer but the surrounding area is a hidden gem if you're willing to look around. We enjoyed the amazing mountain biking trails just outside of the valley which are some of the best in the Sierra's. If you're looking for nightlife go to South Lake, if you want to relax in a beautiful mountain setting this is your spot. We had 3 adult couples and 2 teens and everyone had plenty of room and privacy. The main room and kitchen area are set up perfect for easy entertaining and just kicking back. Can't wait to return.

Perfect place!!

  • 5 of 5

We loved this place and cant wait to go back! Place was super clean and organized. Decor was awesome. Kitchen was very well stocked. He responds very quickly to your mails. One thing no other home owners would provide is a complete set of directions/instructions. We were 2 families with small children, Jon suggested if at all we have to purchase something, stop by at the Safeway on our way as the general store close to this home wont be open till late night. he helped us with a list of kid friendly activities close by with every single detail on how to get there and everything, plus, how to get anything working inside the home. That was really really helpful!

Second day kids woke up asking 'can we please stay here forever??' yes, this was indeed a 'no hassle' trip. Thanks to you, Jon! We'll definitely be back!

Great Location and perfect combination of comfort and luxury

  • 5 of 5

The photos doesn't do this property justice... we were expecting a cookie-cutter condo and were amazed by an over-sized lofty space. Awesome tub in the master. Superb chef's kitchen. It felt like "home"... not just another rental.

Not a true ski in-out, but with a little investigation found some interesting short cuts to and from the lifts that made for minimal walking to and from the mountain.

We will be back!

Gr8 place, accommodating host

  • 5 of 5

We originally booked for three days, but contacted the host (at the last minute) asking for another day, which he graciously accommodated for us. We appreciated that! The host was very communicative on all fronts. The place itself was nice, and is pretty much as advertised. Everything worked (internet/wifi, media center, etc) perfectly, which was also very nice. WE will be looking to stay there in the future.

It was a great house for all whole family

  • 4 of 5

Great place for a multi family vacation. Lots room for everyone. Entertainment center was wonderful. Parking garage is a bit narrow and 2 flight of steps to get to the house. All good. Shuttle bus worked well to Timber Creek ,easy walk or shuttle to main ski area. A week of Fun.

Cozy, well equipped and thought out.

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay here! We are experienced renters and the owner Jon has done a great job on organizing Reindeer Games in a manner that allows for a seamless transition from travel to being on vacation. It was very easy and comfortable. Thumbs up for kid friendly, thumbs up for WIFI and A/V options. Thumbs up for El Nino.
