About Matt and Leah Whiting
We have been lodge owners since 2001. We love what we do and enjoy the peace and solitude of being inside the National Forest. Crested Butte is the best place to live and we love being outdoors and enjoying all the recreation opportunities CB offers.
Matt and Leah Whiting purchased this Cabin in 2001
Why Matt and Leah Whiting chose Crested Butte South
We love living inside the Gunnison National Forest and having all the Cement Creek trails right out our front door. We love hearing Cement Creek running through our property and it's an amazing place to raise our kids and dog heaven for Toby and Keeta--our pooches!
What makes this Cabin unique
The location sits at the base of Cement Mountain and affording awesome mountain, canyon and forest views. There are a ton of deer, elk, bear, pine martens, beaver, birds, eagles, the occasional moose and that's just naming a few critters. Hiking, biking, cross country skiing and snowshoe trails starting right outside our door is the highlight. Our access to recreational amenities comes along with lots and lots of peace and quiet!!! Our location strikes the perfect balance between being in a beautiful secluded valley inside the National Forest but only being a 12 minute drive from the amazing town of Crested Butte and only 15 minutes from the ski area.

Small and Sweet
We loved the Red Fox cabin! It is a great combination between camping and comfort. The "camping" angle comes with a fire pit outside in which to build a lovely fire and cook s'mores; a hammock; and opportunities to see the stars and hike right out the door. There is a troop of lively hummingbirds who live in the trees nearby and zoom past the entrance to a feeder hanging from the cabin eaves. The comfort lies in having a nice warm shower after a day's hike or bike ride; super comfy down quilts and pillows; and the coziness of the cabin. The cabin is well-stocked with kitchen utensils, and there is a full fridge and good gas stove.
Travelers should keep in mind the cabin is just 500 square feet and was originally built in the 1930's. It was terrific for a week for our small family of three (two adults and one child), but people who want more elbow room should check into the larger cabins on property. We are not sure how 6 people could sleep here -- 4 definitely could.
It would be great if there were all dishes for four people -- there are just two pasta bowls and two mason jars for drinks. Just a couple more bowls and glass drinking vessels would be great. The photos do not indicate that the cabin is right next to the property driveway, but all the cabins are thus situated, and the driveway is sparsely used. Travelers should think about bringing camping chairs, as there are just two Adirondack chairs outside next to the fire pit.
The owners are helpful, and everything was clean and well-maintained. The location is fantastic -- you are in the wild, but you have the creature comforts of home as well as being just 10 minutes from the town of Crested Butte. We would definitely stay on this property again as well as recommend it!
There are hiking and biking trails in the summer right from the cabin and Cement Creek runs through the property for trout fishing enthusiast. In the winter, there are snowshoe and cross country ski trails and nice walking trails in winter as well. The cabin's location is very private and peaceful, being inside the National Forest, but we are only a 12 minute drive to downtown Crested Butte for shopping and dining. There is year-round access. Dog heaven!
