About the property

TWO HOUSES 9 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms, in town, close to the beaches, memorable

We have TWO HOUSES on the property. In the summer we only rent them as a pair. Visit our web site for more information, pictures and floor plans. In the spring and fall we rent the pair or just the main house which sleeps 16 at a reduced rate.

The two houses are located on a quiet side street in Douglas. We are closer to the beach than most houses in Saugatuck or Douglas. The houses were specifically built for large reunions and have large group gathering spaces. Eight matching bedrooms with one queen bed in each room the seventh bedroom the children's crew quarters will sleep four in bunk beds. No dormitory style bedrooms. The Keeper's house is a complete second house with a more privacy a full living room, kitchen and fireplace.

The Main house has a dining table with seating for 14 and a large living room which make sure that no one will be left out when gathered around the fire place. The sun porch, library and small office offer more intimate spaces. The fire pit with free wood, outdoor dining area and the private patios all offer great spaces on warm summer nights. This is our family vacation home. New for 2018 beer fridge on patio, new flooring first floor, more perennials in the garden.

New yet warm. Everything was new in 2014. The building has been completely rebuilt with quality materials by a Architect/Builder. The furnishings were specifically selected for the house from Ikea and Crate and Barrel. The wood ceilings, floors and trim make the house warm. Craftsman style mosaic work, original art and creative details add character and charm.

Centrally located between downtown Douglas and Lake Michigan. Shopping, dining and entertainment options are just minutes away. We have parking for six cars in our drive and an additional parking just a short walk away.

Our weekly rentals run from Friday at 5 pm to the next Friday at 11 am. The daily rates rates on this listing are for both houses. The weekly rate is for both houses. visit our web site for more information

About Joanie Hollowell

Joanie and I restore and manage historic buildings in Ann Arbor, Michigan and we use the Boathouse as our vacation home for friends and family. We each grew up in Michigan and feel the draw of Lake Michigan and the small town charm of Douglas. We spend a lot of time at the Boathouse and are always making improvements.

Joanie Hollowell purchased this house in 2011

Why Joanie Hollowell chose Saugatuck

Location, Location, Location A short walk to Douglas. Ride your bike to the beach yet we are located in a quiet residential side street. Saugatuck and Douglas are quaint small towns. We spent two years driving the west coast of Lake Michigan to find the perfect spot.

What makes this house unique

The Boathouse is unique in that it was purpose built by a Architect/Builder as a vacation spot and gathering place for large groups. It not a vacation home furnished with left over furniture. Large gathering spaces make the house comfortable and flexible. We remember being a kid and have built the puppet theater, crew quarters and engine room all for the kids. The buildings have eight matching bedrooms all with queen beds. The ninth bedroom is a bunk room for the kids with two bunk beds.

Family reunion in Douglas was AWESOME

  • 5 of 5

This was probably the best house we have stayed in and we have been doing this reunion for 30+ years with the last 6 renting houses. Our ages ranged from 8 to 81 and everyone had a fantastic time. The house was spotless and the amenities were perfect. The "gift bags" with the kitchen supplies and the fact that all the bathrooms had soap and extra toilet paper was fantastic. The layout of the house is perfect for large groups to spend time together or apart. The large open kitchen and large kitchen table made meal time gathering fun. The fireplace room is perfect for the whole group to be together but is also set up with 3 separate "areas" so you can all be together but still have your small groups. The sun porch is a perfect place to escape. Our younger ones in the group put on several puppet shows in the puppet theater and the seating there is incredible. The fire pit is amazing - makes building fires easy even for us amateurs - and there was an amazing amount of wood available. Having the separate Boathouse was also fun. Our recent high school graduate got to have the place to himself for a couple of nights and he really enjoyed the independence. Be sure to check out the outside games available - cornhole, etc. We walked to Douglas beach and one of the more adventurous young adults hiked along the beach from Douglas to Oval beach. Another adventurous group walked down to climb Mt Bald Head. (They called for pickup after they finished :-). You have to try the pizza from Pizza Mambo - there may be a wait but it is worth it. We also loved the grocery store within walking distance if you want but just a 5 minute drive down the road. We also explored downtown Sagautuk and took the paddle wheel boat tour (beautiful views). This house was everything we expected and more. We are already trying to plan a reunion back here in a few years. Just a word about the owners - working with Joanie was amazing. She was quick to respond to questions and made the whole process very easy. She and her husband have designed and furnished a beautiful vacation home and seem to enjoy sharing with their visitors. This is a perfect get away for families or really any group wanting to just hang out or to get out and explore the area around Douglas/Sagautuk. Thanks for sharing your space Joanie and hopefully we will get to share it again in a few years.

A+ rental- pictures don't lie.

  • 5 of 5

I can not find one thing to complain about! This home was CLEAN! Plenty of towels, kitchen tools, and seating.

The beds were comfortable, we had plenty of hot water and fire wood for the fire pit.

We loved the big kitchen table for gathering with plenty of chairs. Anything you needed was close (walking distance if needed) take out food, ice, groceries.

We rented the house to celebrate 12 women turning 50 years old this year.

Incredible Houses

  • 5 of 5

My extended family just ended a week at the Douglas Boathouse. It met all of our expectations and exceeded most of them.

Our group included my mom, my siblings, our spouses, and our kids. Nine adults, eight kids. The houses had room for all of us.

Beyond having room for us, the houses were renovated, decorated, and furnished with a great deal of care and attention to detail, and are maintained in exactly the same way. I could mention numerous details, but I'll stick to just a few: 1) the kitchen has enough silverware, utensils, pots and pans, and other hardware to cook almost anything you can think of; 2) there are five bathrooms, and when we had multiple people taking post-beach showers at the same time, nobody ever ran out of hot water; and 3) the backyard includes kindling, small logs, and huge logs, plus an incredibly full-designed fire pit, which made evening bonfires easy to make - we had one every night.

As another reviewer said, a great experience from start to finish.

Our family just had the pleasure of staying at the Douglas Boathouse. There are 11 of us in all including 4 young children. We have rented vacation homes before and have found the furnishings to be rather an eclectic combination of odds and ends. Not so at the Boathouse. This home is decorated with great care. Everything is coordinated in a very attractive style. It felt like we were really in someones home. We all love to cook and we were not disappointed at the wide selection of pots, pans, serving bows, knives, you name it. There was even a 4 slice toaster. :) Clean up was aided by two dishwashers in the kitchen and we made really good use of them!

There is a great outdoor sitting area in the back of the house that everyone seemed to gravitate to when we weren't out enjoying the area attractions. One of our favorite spots was the Oval Beach. Only 5 minutes away it is a super clean beach.

We all loved our time at the Boathouse and highly recommend it if your looking for a place in West Michigan.

Fabulous House - Great Location!

  • 5 of 5

The Douglas Boathouse exceeded all of our expectations! We were 4 combined families of 14. We also rented the Captain's Quarters, so that Grandma could have a quiet space to relax away from the noise and it was absoltuely perfect. We even had bedrooms that went unused because there was so much space. The kitchen was a perfect gathering space for the entire family for meals with tons of cooking utensils and spices, while the basement kept the kids busy with the large TV and puppet theatre. We enjoyed smores and cocktails around the firepit every night, played bag-o and relaxed. The location was a short drive to both Douglas Beach and Oval Beach as well as both downtown areas for restaurants and activities. Highly recommend the Dune ride, Kayaking on the Kalamazoo and renting jet ski's. We LOVED this house. The only suggestion we have is to put a TV on the main floor in the family room so that the adults can catch up on news or watch a movie, otherwise everything was perfect! We are already talking about returning. Thanks for sharing your home with our family!

Great Family Vacation Home

  • 5 of 5

We rented the Boathouse for our Family Reunion and Mothers 75th Birthday Celebration. We were a family of 5 (10 adults and 9 teens) and this home accomodated all of us. We loved the spacious kitchen. The long table accomodated all of us for all meals. Two dishwashers was a great idea when planning out the kitchen appliances. Loved it that they had two refrigerators. The whole house was clean and up to date. Enough bathrooms for all. Loved that all the bedrooms were the same size (no fighting on who gets the master bedroom). The fire pit in the backyard was well liked by all (we had many of hotdogs and smores over the fire). Even though there was a tv in the basement, we did not use it once. With all of the fun family functions (Christmas in July, Birthday Celebration, Hawaiian Lua) and all of the near by places to go ( Dune buggy rides, Bike rides, Sun Bathing at the Beach, Brewery tours, Boat rentals,Paddle boarding rentals and shopping in Saugatuck) there was no time to watch. I also loved the early morning coffee clutches near the gas fire place in the living room. Nice place to relax. Thank you so much for a wonderful week at your home. We had a blast!!!!

We are on a quiet side street 438 Fremont, two blocks off the Blue Star Highway. It is a five minute walk to down town Douglas. The Lake Michigan beach is a ten minute walk. Oval beach in Saugatuck is within biking distance or five minutes by car. We are closer to the beaches than most houses in Saugatuck or Douglas. The Saugatuck shopping district is just on the other side of Kalamazoo lake about five minutes by car.

Boat tours of Saugatuck and Lake Michigan in a paddle wheeler complete with a bar. Dune rides on the dunes of Saugatuck. Berry picking, winery tours, comedy club, piano bar, preforming arts center. Vintage baseball at berry field, brew pub up the street, sailing charters, bike trails, the list goes on.

Saugatuck and Douglas are Michigan's answer to Cape Cod. Quaint villages with a lot of natural beauty, historic buildings , and friendly locals.
