Situated on the seaward side of the Warren in a conservation area of central St Ives stands Men an Mor Cottage. Perched on a large outcrop of blue elvin rock, between Porthminster Beach and the harbour, the large picture windows frame a spectacular outlook, from St Ives town to Godrevy lighthouse made famous by Virginia Woolf.

Relax on the window seat and watch the world go by, boats sailing past, and various wildlife including seals, dolphins and cormorants. Men an Mor cottage is perfect for holidays at any time of the year. In the winter stay warm inside whilst watching the waves crash over the rocks below. During fine weather, look out over the azure blue sea or walk the few steps to the golden sands of Porthminister beach. The train/coach station and car park are a 3 minute walk. Free wifi

Men an Mor: Perched on the rocks between Porthminster beach and the harbour sits Men an Mor cottage so named after the slab of blue elvin which protects it from the sea. Men is Cornish for rock or stone and Mor means sea. The setting is striking with an expansive view from St Ives harbour to Godrevy lighthouse. When the tide is out the golden sands draw out the beachcombers, whilst at night the harbour lights shimmer across the water. This peaceful idyll is occasionally broken by stormy weather with the sounds and spectacular display of the Atlantic crashing against the rocks below, best viewed from the comfortable window seat with a glass of your favourite tipple. Men an Mor is favourably situated, in a conservation area, on the seaward side of the Warren, next to Porthminister beach and its famous café. The train station and car park are a 3 minute walk. The harbour, only a stones throw, provides a full range of eating establishments.

St Ives: St Ives has long been famous for its artist colony drawn to the area by the fantastic nature of the light. It was at the vanguard of the Modern British movement and those inspired by the town include Virginia Woolf and Alfred Wallace. This influence is still strongly in evidence today, with the world renowned Tate, St Ives and a wide selection of good quality smaller galleries showing an ever changing display of art from post war up to the present time. Music is also an important feature of the town. Throughout the year the pubs and the Guildhall play host to various bands from local to world music.

All of these artistic achievements are celebrated during the St Ives September festival, which runs for the 2nd and 3rd weeks of September, a popular draw for both UK and international visitors.

About Jane at Beachshacks

Both working in Midlands at the time - 20yrs ago my husband and I met for the first time in Zennor, a small villlage just outside St Ives. We got married in Trevarno Gardens Helston and honeymooned in St Ives. We found Men an Mor by chance and as soon as we walked through the door and saw the view, we just both went Wow - and that was it - smitten!

Jane at Beachshacks purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Jane at Beachshacks chose Saint Ives

It's all about the view and the incredible light. No surprise that the Cottage was previously home to 2 local artists It has exactly the right aspect, the view is incredible and inspiring. It also defies it's central St Ives location, there are no footpaths or road in front so it feels pretty peaceful. Just the sound of the waves, & when the tide is low beautiful golden sand appears.

What makes this cottage unique

Tranquil location with wide spectacular seaviews from St Ives harbour to Godrevy lighthouse - yet central for town

A lovely compact cottage to stay in, with absolutely the very best views of St Ives.

  • 5 of 5

On arriving at Men en Mor we were greeted with a glorious rainbow over St Ives in our view from the sitting room. It set the tone for our stay!

The cottage is well equipped, with plenty of all you need in the kitchen, dvd's and books in the sitting room and nice sheets and towels in the bedrooms. The car parking slot was said to be 3 minutes away from the house, but realistically it is more like a 10 minute walk up hill to get to the car, so that's worth knowing if you have older folk with you, or you are carrying lots. It's better to bring the car down to the cottage to load up. Our 4 night stay was just glorious though and the parking mattered not a jot to us. If there was one thing in the house I would love an upgrade on, it would be the showers, as the pressure is low, so the showers under par. But again, it was not a holiday spoiler! The house was always welcoming, extra stand alone radiators were dotted around the house and a great addition for the colder days and nights. It really is a gem, gem, gem of a property and we would love to return as soon as possible. A really special spot to stay in St Ives.

We stayed at Men an Mor cottage for a week in March this year with our two young boys. Everything was perfect. The photos on the web site are accurate - we enjoyed sensational views, a perfect location, and every home comfort. Restaurants, cafes, shops, banks and supermarkets are all within an easy stroll. St Ives is beautiful, and an excellent base for exploring the Cornish countryside. Jane was extemely helpful during our enquiry and booking process, with everything running smoothly. Thank you so much! We will certainly stay again next time we travel to England and would recommend Men an Mor to any of our friends and family.

The old town of St Ives juts out to sea and is surrounded on three sides by water, creating almost an island. There are many beaches all with beautiful golden sand. Relax in the sun, take a walk over the sands, paddle in the sea or try your hand at surfing with help from fully qualified instructors.

For those who prefer walking, the coastal path is on your doorstep. Set out from Porthminister beach and continue to Carbis Bay, then to Hayle and beyond. Alternatively walk around the coast of the town until you reach Porthmeor beach, then continue along the beautiful and wild coastal path to Zennor, a must for nature lovers with bird and seal colonies and occasional dolphins. Look out for the famous Mermaid on the way and take sustenance at the local pub before the return walk or for those captivated by the warming fire, the last bus back.
