About Kathryn Balteff
We purchased this home and restored it before moving our sheep farm out to a larger parcel close by. We couldn't bear to part with it because it is so sweet and cozy. So we are offering it for rentals so others can enjoy its charm during their vacation stays on the peninsula.
Kathryn Balteff purchased this House in 2008
Why Kathryn Balteff chose Winter Harbor
This little cape cottage has been lovingly restored over the past eight years from top to bottom. It is one of the three oldest standing homes in Winter Harbor built by the Pendleton family sometime between 1836 & 1842 according to records from the Winter Harbor Historical Society. It sits on one acre that backs up to 100's of acres of woods loaded with wildlife. It is not unusual to see deer, fox, wild turkeys, and even a moose once in a while in the back yard.

Loved our stay at Moonshadow Cottage
We loved our stay at Moonshadow Cottage and Winter Harbor. The house was adorable and had lots of quirky charm. Everything we needed to have a comfortable stay was right there. The washer and dryer were greatly appreciated as was the Wifi. We enjoyed being able to watch deer and wild turkeys from the living room. It was also so centrally located. We enjoyed great meals at Chase's and a fantastic breakfast at JM Garirsh. We actually liked the Winter Harbor part of Acadia National Park the best. It wasn't as crowded as the Bar Harbor part and the scenery was breathtaking. Just wish we'd had more time to stay at the cottage. Hope we will be able to return some day.
Thank you so much for your kind words! We're happy you enjoyed your stay and our beautiful little part of the world. We'd love to have you back to stay anytime!
The house was clean and welcoming There is plenty of room for guests and storage areas as well ❤️
The home is very spacious. So many unique features and very sunny and bright. Could not get Verizon cell service but there is a land line for local calls. Several stores and restaurants in neighborhood. Very quiet neighborhood. ❤️
We're so glad you enjoyed the house. Thank you for your kind review!
Everything I expected with rustic and quaint nuances throughout.
If you like formula accommodations (Holiday Inn, etc), it won't be for you. If you like experiencing life in genuine surroundings, you will love it! Quiet, clean and very comfortable. Coffee and breakfast on the deck or in the windowed dining room. The warmth of a gas fireplace in the TV room or watching the deer in the yard at dusk. So much to love while you experience the beauty of the Maine seascapes or hiking the nearby Schoodic National Park (Forest). I can still hear the wind wafting through the tall evergreens while viewing the rocky waters below from the forest aerie.
Thank you! We are so glad you enjoyed your stay at the cottage!
Rustic but okay.
Great location to visit the quiet side of Acadia National Park

Glad you enjoyed your stay! Package is on its way!
unique, peaceful retreat at the end of the road
Moonshadow Cottage is an 1830s farmhouse filled with charm, rustic and comfortable, tucked away in a village just minutes from beautiful Schoodic Peninsula, but without the bustle of other nearby tourist towns. The ceilings are low, the floors are uneven, and we absolutely loved it. Kitchen had everything we needed, bathroom was clean w/ both tub and shower. Three inviting living spaces on the first floor allow a family to spread out and have privacy as desired; spacious deck and yard in the back to enjoy the out of doors. On a quiet dead-end street, feels very secluded, yet one can easily walk a couple of blocks to village shops. Wifi works perfectly if you need to remain connected. Owners were available to answer questions and offer stories about house and area history, but never intrusive. Winter Harbor has a great dime store and at least one beautiful art gallery. Schoodic portion of Acadia Natl Park is wonderful and worth repeat visits (hiking, biking, etc.).
Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We are so glad you had a nice time!
Located 2 miles from the Schoodic section of Acadia National Park and 45 minutes by ferry or an hour by vehicle to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park on Mt. Desert Island.
