We think our house is special and I’m sure you will too. The architecture is unique and the state of the art kitchen is huge and fully equipped. There’s attention to detail throughout and exquisite views from every window. Overall it’s 2300sf plus a two car garage. Enjoy a private setting, on an acre, with a few nearby homes above or below in the hilly natural landscape. WiFi.

The upper level has high peaked ceilings, a wood burning fireplace, large flat screen HDTV and superb views from large windows. A modern style and open floor plan is balanced against an eclectic mix of furniture styles and periods. Rich mahogany floors and oriental rugs form the base. In the dining area the mountain views are framed by a grand round window, 4ft in diameter. Opposed to this a smaller circle window centers a 16 ft long galley kitchen with golden toned granite countertops and rich natural cherry cabinets. This kitchen is made for comfortable cooking and entertaining, open and interactive with the living and dining areas. There is a diner style booth at one end of the kitchen and a half bath at the other. A private office/bedroom is opposite the half bath and it's the only other separate room on the upper level. This room has a large table desk for a quiet working area and a trundle couch pulls out to a very comfortable double bed.

Just outside the upper/main level there is a patio carved into the back yard hill. You can prepare your dinner on the gas grill or hang out while looking across to the Collegiate Peaks from the patio.

In the 3 regular bedrooms plus the office/bedroom there are beds for 8 persons. The master bedroom is at mid level with a huge window revealing a panorama of the foothills fading to the Sangre de Cristos on the horizon. It has a walk in closet joined to a full tiled bath with both tub and shower.

The ground level is a few steps down and has two comfortable bedrooms with large windows and expansive mountain views across the valley. Across the hall is a full bath featuring limestone tile. A full size washer and dryer are in the laundry room next to the bath. At the end of the hallway is an interior entry to the two car garage.

Donna and Steve are each self employed . After Steve spent 35+ years of planning,design,and building; it's mostly photography now. Donna has a business helping seniors downsize and staging homes for sale, based in the Philadelphia area.We will spend several months a year here and continue in the Philly area as well. With a great love of architecture, real town life, and the outdoors we both fell in love with this place and feel right at home here. Donna grew up in the Blue Ridge Mountain town of Lynchburg, VA and is so glad to be in the shadow of the Collegiate Peaks.

Why Steve Kaplan or Donna Willmann chose South Central

Steve passed through Salida on his way up from skiing Taos in 2003 and wanted to return. Seven years later we did it, renting a cabin through VRBO,and buying a season ski pass to Monarch. We fell for Salida and returned again the next winter. It really was a fit and we searched for property. We were hoping to find something ready to live in. Ironically we had passed this home and enjoyed it's ''personality'', but it was not listed. Then at the end of our stay as we weighed our choices and viewed all the comps again, this house came on the market. The owner was the builder and the quality showed. A deal followed shortly thereafter. We feel fortunate to be here. It's such a cool town that's not overdone or pretentious. Especially, we are thrilled to be living in this home. Being above the valley floor expands our views but the house is still easily accessible. We love it here.

What makes this house unique

Architectural details,rich woods,a fabulous kitchen and oh those views. High enough above the valley we see the town and stars sparkle in the distance at night. The mountains stretch forever like a jagged ribbon tying the sky to the valley below.

Very impressed!

We were nervous about booking this trip because it would be the first time for our teenagers to ski. There was no need to worry because it was probably one of the best vacations that we have taken. This house was impressive and very clean. It is beautiful and welcoming when walking in the door. It is a tri level house with wood floors. The kitchen is amazing with granite counters. All you need to provide is your food and there is everything in that kitchen that you would need to prepare meals. The living room furniture appears to be brand new and the wood fireplace is amazing. On the bottom level there is 2 bedrooms and the laundry room. The washer and dryer were perfect for all of our ski gear. It takes about 7 minutes to get to downtown Salida and about 30 minutes to get to Monarch Pass. Probably one of the things we enjoyed most was the water feature about 10 foot from the front windows, because in the morning the deer all come to drink from it. You can drink your coffee on the bench, inside the window, and marvel at all the deer. We did not have the need to talk to the owners once we arrived but before our vacation we got a nice email from them with all the information we would need. I have no doubt that if we would have needed something they would have been more than willing to help. We would stay here again.

Salida Fall Trip

This house is the best we have ever rented, best equipped, wonderful views, peaceful, clean, and worked very well for two couples. We enjoyed Salida, Monarch Pass, Silverthorn, Frisco, Breckenridge, Copper Mtn., Aspen and Independence Pass, and the Maroon Bells. Our friends from Canada were truly impressed with the house and Colorado. We all highly recommend this home.

Amazing!!!

Great house in a wonderful location! Went to Salida to get away from the city and get some fresh air. Showed up at the house and was so impressed with the place - it was very inviting and warm. Especially loved the eclectic art and style... It was nice to wake up to deer in the yard, or scaling the hill behind the house, and watching them while sitting at the booth during breakfast. Views from the house are wonderful. Thank you Steve and Donna for opening up your home to me

Great house, excellent location, beautiful view!

This was our first time to use the VRBO/HomeAway site for vacation housing but this experience was positive in every aspect. First of all, the owner was an excellent communicator, responding promptly to email (even though they were out of the country), answering every question we had and even recommending things to do in the area. Second, the house was fantastic, a great place for a family getaway/gathering. Their listing accurately depicted everything about the property. Third, the view of the snow-capped mountains was nothing less than majestic. We enjoyed watching the mule deer that are abundant in the area, even grazing close to the house in the early evening.

Salida is a great community, with everything you might need during your trip. We thought we would be smart and fill up with gas on the interstate, expecting prices to be higher in the mountains. To our surprise, gas was twenty cents cheaper in Salida. There are a number of cool shops, antique stores and some great local restaurants. If you want to prepare your meals, there is a Safeway and a Walmart with a good grocery section.

We enjoyed driving around the area, even making a trip over the pass to Gunnison. Snowmobiling at Monarch was a blast--highly recommended. They even have dog sledding there. Of course, there are opportunities for skiing at Monarch, too.

All in all, a great, fun, relaxing trip.

Nestled in the foothills at the edge of town, we are the last house on County Rd 156 before it joins the Ute Trail running from Salida into San Isabel National Forest. Turn left on the Ute Trail and there are hiking trails and a wonderful 4wd ride to Aspen Ridge.Turn right and you will be in the center of Salida in 5 minutes. Look in any direction and there will be mountains. To the west across the Arkansas River Valley, running north to south are the Collegiate Peaks. They feature the greatest number of 14000+ ft mountains in any county in the USA. Enjoy awe inspiring sunsets. First light on these mountains isn’t shabby either. To the south you look at the edge of town framed by Mt Ouray (13973ft) and the north end of the Sangre de Cristo Range

This is farm and ranch country so you pass local farms and cattle fields on your way into Salida. It’s a great small town that serves both locals and travelers well. Salida boasts the most historic buildings of any town in Colorado. There are great little galleries, coffee shops, restaurants and taverns. There’s an indoor town pool with natural hot springs soaking tubs. What there is not.... traffic! No interstates here.

Sports and outdoor activities abound all year. Our home is only 5 min.from fishing, rafting or kayaking on the Arkansas River. Hiking and mountain biking trails are everywhere. Head east from town into Bighorn Sheep Canyon and see... possibly bighorn sheep, definitely rocky cliffs anchored by the Arkansas River. Photographers love it here. Head west on Rt 50 and In 25 minutes you will be at the Continental Divide. Ski Mt Monarch. It is known for some of the best snow in Colorado,plenty of easy to steep challenging runs and short lift lines.
