The Colony is a mid-century colonial icon in St. Johns. The property features two fully furnished, stylishly decorated apartments designed to make your stay in the Pacific Northwest inspiring and comfortable. Units can be rented separately, together or in conjunction with any of the adjacent multi-use spaces that make up The Colony.
The Colony is a fully-functioning event space which includes creative office, work and presentation rooms, a commercial commissary kitchen and a movement arts studio.
The apartments are private rooms located on the second floor of the building, however you will enter through the main door and foyer, before following the hallway upstairs. Please be aware, there is no elevator onsite, stairs only. Please note, it is possible that a class or small event could be taking place on the first floor of The Colony during your stay. We will let you know prior to booking if we have something scheduled in one our first floor creative spaces during the dates you request.
'Bones and Arrows,' is the charming two-bedroom apartment, freshly re-decorated with a quirky, cozy Pacific NW lodge style. Perfect for a family with kids, it features a master bedroom with high-quality queen-sized bed and luxury linens, a second, large bedroom with two full-sized beds, an open kitchen and a cozy living/dining space with a convertible sofa for yet another guest (or two kids) to sleep.
The second unit is a one-bedroom called ‘Landing Pad’ and is listed separately on this site.
Originally from Staten Island, NY - I'm a mom, restaurant owner and real-estate developer with a background in the arts. I've lived in this neighborhood since moving to Portland in 1996 when I opened a mixed-use art and performance space in NE Portland. I currently own Yakuza, Nonna, DOC and Dime Store restaurants, Dash, a commissary kitchen and now The Colony.
Dayna McErlean purchased this apartment in 2012
Portland is legendary for cutting-edge thinking in everything from art to fashion to cuisine to outdoor adventure, which makes it the perfect place for a concept like The Colony to be born. The Colony is totally unique. Our idea is to provide inspiring and comfortable lodging in an interesting, undiscovered corner of town, but also to think about the expanding needs and wants of today's global creative class.
St. Johns has a feel that is also completely its own. Set apart from the rest of the city by a beautiful, historic bridge, it's a village with blue-collar roots that go back a century, in the process of reinventing itself thanks to a recent influx of young creative businesses.
The Colony provides a unique opportunity to put together the right space for a list of possibilities that's as prolific as your imagination. From a simple overnight stay to a pop-up art show, catered dinner party, lunch meeting, company brainstorming or educational retreat, book club or yoga retreat, wedding, girls' weekend, long-term employee lodging with meeting and presentation space, movement arts classes or performances of all kinds. The baker's kitchen makes it possible to bring food and beverage service into the mix with ease. For more information about spaces beyond the apartments.
Maddie was very helpful. We really enjoyed our stay. Walked everywhere! Great restaurants and shops. Thank you!
This is an odd space with some good points and some drawbacks. Don't be put off by the fact that it's a mixed-use space; we had no issues with the downstairs tenants while we were there. On the upside, this is a large unit with lots of space to spread out, and efficient air-conditioning units which we certainly used during the heat wave while we were there. There's tons of closet and drawer space, and the master bed was quite comfortable. On the downside - the bathroom is tiny, a single shower stall with no lighting and no shelves inside the stall. The 3 military cots in the second bedroom were just ok for my small daughter but not for my 19 year old son - I can't imagine anyone over about 5 ft 4 or 140 pounds being comfortable in those beds. They would be ok for small children. The laundry is shared with the other apartment, so hope that your neighbors are more considerate than the ones that were there when we were there! The kitchen has a 1950s fridge - tiny, and no door on the freezer compartment, so unusable - a tiny 1970s stove which I was afraid to use - no microwave (why not put one in? so easy!). Like the other reviewer, I was not happy with the state of cleanliness. The refrigerator was dirty, the floors were acceptable, but furniture, lamps, etc were dusty. Except for the bed in the master bedroom, the style really felt like "culled from garage sales". It's a distance from downtown but driving access is excellent, so don't let the location put you off. There are lots of stores in the neighborhood as well - Safeway as well as small markets and restaurants.
I was excited to hear about this space being renovated with rental apartments available, as my brother lives in St. Johns. I appreciate the look of cool vintage eclectic decor, but unfortunately, the furnishings are not very comfortable or functional. The couch is vinyl, the dresser drawers don't work well, and the bedside lamps are metal and burning hot after use. One bedroom has true small military bunks- not particularly comfortable for most people. Also, a lot of the furnishings/decor smell musty. There were also issues with cleanliness- mildew in the shower/shower curtain, someone's sock was left on the floor, and a towel that I got out of the linen closet had a large brown stain on it. The kitchen and linen cabinet was poorly stocked. There were 5 of us staying, and there were not enough forks, plates, or bath towels for everyone, and there is no coffee maker or microwave. To top it off, there was a very unpleasant fish odor that seemed to come from the commercial kitchen vent outside the bedroom window in the evenings- I had to go out and buy air freshener. We did not want to watch television anyway, but although the listing states there is cable, it is apparently not available per the brochure in the unit.
I chose the apartment at the Colony for a weekend visit with my sisters and mom and it turned out to be the perfect choice. My sisters and I slept in the room with three twin beds and my mom took the room with the full bed. It was great to have a kitchen to cook in. The apartment was quiet, warm, and adorable. We checked in and then hopped over the St. Johns bridge for a hike in forest park (so close!) and then headed to dinner nearby. Jeremy and Dayna were both very helpful and accommodating.
Enjoyed our stay at the Colony over Christmas Eve and Christmas this year; comfortable sleeping arrangements, hot showers, plenty of fresh laundered towels, warm and cozy linens/ comforters/ Pendleton Wool Blankets, high ceilings, wood floors, very clean with eclectic furniture and fun decorations. I loved the drapes fashioned from Pendleton Wool Blankets in my room!! The Colony is perfectly situated close to St. Johns' main street which made for an enjoyable walk with my two sons over the holidays. My oldest son made us a delicious dinner in the vintage style kitchen. We had everything we needed. Thank you Dayna for the nice stay at your place!!
Room was promised to be warm, instead it was at 59 degrees and couldn't be heated more. The owner is an unethical woman who stated that the thermostat isn't necessarily an accurate way to measure the temperature. It really was 58-59, as confirmed by the thermometer bag tag I have. Stay away at all costs.
St. Johns strikes a dynamic balance between Portland and Not-Portland. It is close to the city but feels like a small town. The Colony is 25 minutes from PDX airport and 15 minutes from downtown Portland, a stone’s throw from numerous cafes and bars, supermarket, movie theater and live music venues. Just across the beautiful St. Johns bridge you’ll find Forest Park and Sauvie Island, two of the area’s most famous areas for cycling, hiking and birdwatching.
