About the property

Private home, 4 Bedrooms, 3 Baths (Sleeps 10)

4 br 3500 sqft private home 1 mile from dmr (purgatory)

One of the closest private homes available to Durango Mountain Resort, our 4 bedroom 3 bath 3500 sqft home located at Lake Of The Pines is perfect for a small group or large family with children. Situated just one mile from Durango Mountain Resort, as well as one mile for The Needles General Store, there is no spot more convenient for enjoying everything there is to offer. On the main level, our three story home offers full kitchen, dining table that seats eight people and pool table. Wood burning fireplace and open patio that runs the length of the home with a full glass wall and vaulted ceilings that really bring the outdoors right into your main living area. Our basement is fully finished and features a walk out patio with 6 person hot tub, a new wet bar, foosball table and 42 inch flat screen TV with satellite so that even though you are relaxing in the wilderness, you still don’t have to miss that big game. The basement also features a nursery or children’s play room and a bedroom with queen bed and full bath. Another great feature is that our first and second levels are very secluded from each other so if you have a large and varying age group, each one can entertain themselves with their own activities and not affect the other. 4WD\AWD required in Winter.

About Owner/Property Manager

Derek and Kim Gustafson live in Dallas TX with their two young girls, but enjoy the mountains and outdoors and make as much time as possible to spend in Colorado.

Owner/Property Manager purchased this house in 2011

Why Owner/Property Manager chose Durango

We bought this property because of it's location and size for our family. This is our favorite part of Colorado, so when the opportunity came, we jumped on it.

Not what it looks like in the pictures!

  • 1 of 5

What you should know that is not stated nor do the pictures show you:

1. The reason you only see pictures of the outside covered in snow is, he doesn't want you to know how weed infested and gross it looks. He is a realtor who knows how to make it look like something it's not.

---The inside is not as big as it looks in pics.

---The basement is 1 of the 3 levels which is misleading and it's a dungeon down there. In need of complete renovation.

---there are barely any pics compared to other VRBO homes. He doesn't want you to see what the bedrooms, bathrooms or anything else really looks.

2.There are neighbor dogs that come use the bathroom all day right where you have to park your car.

3.No garage and very little space to park.

4. No grass area for kids.

5.The lake in the neighborhood is for perm. residents only, not renters. We were informed that we were not allowed to use the lake for fishing.

6.No trash can. There is a dumpster at the front of the community where we were supposed to put trash but the owner did not have a key to open the padlocks. So the HOA came by again and told us not to put trash on top of the dumpster anymore and take it somewhere else.

7. The kitchen is gross. He doesn't show pics of it for good reason. We spent hours cleaning the fridge, dirty dishes, counters and shelving so we could put our groceries away.

8.I could list it all but it would take too long. The house is in major disrepair. The screens have holes in them so with no air conditioning, we bought tape to fill the holes so bugs wouldn't get in. Massive cob webs inside and out. It's like a haunted house.

9.When we sat down at the breakfast table, we had to pull dried feces off the carpet underneath. Disgusting!

10.The plumber never came to fix the kitchen sink that was coming off or the toilets we had to plunge because all the bathrooms were backing up.

We tried to make it work for our relaxing summer vacation but after the problems kept piling up, we called VRBO and they put us in a different home which was so clean and well kept. I don't see how anyone could give a good review for this place but maybe there are skiers during the winter time who overlook things b/c they are at Purgatory all day. Best advice, ASK HIM TO SEND YOU MORE PICS, A LOT MORE!!

The house was very nice but wasn't completely clean upon arrival.

  • 3 of 5

The house was very nice. Took a little time getting used to the noise from the freeway. Wished there was a yard for our young children to play. Loved the fact that we were actually out of town. Breathtaking views all around. The only big negative was the fact that all the dishes were dirty...plates, cups, silverware, pots, pans etc. Some of the bedding didn't smell clean so we washed it as well. The first thing we did was hand wash all plates, drinking cups, bowls, utensils, pots and pans. There was actual food still crusted on items. Also there were spider webs everywhere.

Once that was done, we enjoyed our trip.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the review and we are glad you enjoyed your stay. One of the unfortunate things about being in an area of Colorado know as the "Mineral Belt" is that we have extremely hard water, even with the water softener set on its highest level which creates a very difficult situation when it comes to the dishwasher and washing machine. That said I am going to have someone check the water softener to make sure it is working properly.

Fantastic property in a great location!

  • 4 of 5

This house was great for our family ski trip! It held our group of 10 adults and 2 kids perfectly and there was more than enough room for everyone. The only down side was the hot tub was not working and the oven had a habit of turning itself off. If you're looking for a house close to the DMR with plenty of space, this is the place for you. We made many wonderful and lasting memories here, thank you for sharing your home!

Nice home, great location, but no attention to details

  • 3 of 5

The home is nice and comfortable in a great location for skiing. However, there is no reliable internet/wifi, the hot tub does not work (dirty and empty), and the coffee pot does not work. Also, there is only one TV in the entire home and it is in the basement. Our family of 12 stayed for 7 nights and enjoyed the surrounding area and attractions over the Christmas holidays. Two of us needed to do some work online during the week, but internet did not work, even after multiple calls to the ISP and the owner over the entire week, so do not expect any online access. The owner should remove the hot tub amenity from the web listing as, apparently from earlier reviews, it has not worked for several months.

Also, we left the home clean with all departure instructions followed. Today, I received notice that the homeowner has filed a damage insurance claim for the heat system, floor damage, and cleaning for a total of $1700. I would be interested in the details of any damages claimed.

This was very large, nice cabin in a very good location for us

  • 4 of 5

The listing was accurate except the hot tub was not operational. It could use a little maintenance in a couple of areas. Generally it was very nice and had enough room for many more people than we had in our party. The directions for operation of everything were clear at check in. The information packet left in the cabin was out of date relative to the current restaurants in the nearby area. We went to two of them one night only to find out they had been closed for several years. I would recommend the property and just list the few issues so they could be checked out in advance of arrival. It would be perfect for a large group of skiers.
