Sleeps 7, Easy Access to All the Big Island has to Offer!
Hi, I am Zoë, a Brit who feels completely at home here on the Big Island. This amazing place with the very best people you'll ever meet, so many terrains; jungle, desert, rainforest, jungle, rolling ranchlands, snow-capped mountains and Kilauea, our very own live volcano, making the Big Island bigger every moment as lava falls steaming into the ocean; twelve of the world's sixteen weather patterns; green, black, gray and white sand beaches; the world's highest mountain (from the seabed up!), warm ponds heated by the volcano under the palms nestled by a sun-soaked ocean, snorkeling, kayaking, caving, climbing, surfing, paddle-boarding, zip-lining, hiking, swimming, farmer's markets, national parks, and so much more... delicious local foods; beauty, beauty and more beauty; magnificent waterfalls, ancient giant mango groves, the stark black lava rock, the clear blue skies and the warm waters of turquoise ocean. Giant turtles, spinner dolphins and whales who swim wild and free with us as we play in the ocean! We enjoy them all. We are family oriented with many friends and family, local and international, who often stay at our home. We enjoy a simple island lifestyle, gatherings of good company, good music, good food and we prefer to live alcohol-free and smoke-free. We have three dogs, Koa, Maui and Lilikoi, all of whom are well-socialzed and well-behaved. We're a low-tech family, no broadcast TV, no video games, although we do have the internet and Netflix for the movies we love to watch together. As a family (however many of us there are at home!) we play board games, any games, sing, write, create arts and crafts, garden, cook, bake, and spend time in the great outdoors of the Big Island, cycling, hiking, swimming, kayaking and boogie-boarding, amongst other things. We cook our food from scratch, using local or home-grown ingredients as much as possible and encourage exploration of the local culinary delights!
Zoe purchased this Lodge in 2012
Why Zoe chose Volcano
We chose Hale Pono because we love the peaceful location and how well it was built, using local resources, like the wood floors, and careful attention to the things that matter living in a tropical climate.
What makes this Lodge unique

Hale Pono is a lovely rural retreat from which to branch out to enjoy all the area has to offer. The house is spacious and well appointed with almost everything we needed. A bit warm during the day without AC, but the fans and cool night air kept us comfortable at night. It's a bit tricky to find the property the first time, so clearer gate markings would help there. The owner was away, but made every effort to answer our inquiries and resolve any issues we had. Overall, a very pleasant stay in a beautiful setting! Bonus...fresh eggs, fresh tropical fruit , beautiful flower arrangements (thank you Zoe) and if you like frogs, birds and morning roosters, you have a night-long chorus!
Exceptional in every way! The vacation of a l
Talk about tailored individual service! Within a week of booking, and a lot of great communication, Zoe sent us a guidebook and details to interest each of us (2 adults, 2 teens, 1 under ten), plus directions - we did need those excellent written directions! Finding the place and checking in were a breeze, the place was even better than we imagined. Treats for each of us plus fresh-picked fruit and newly-laid eggs. The rental was fresh, spotless and smelled delicately of the beautiful tropical flower arrangements - heavenly.
We had been looking forward to the nightime jungle chorus, but it proved a little much for one of the teens - no problem, there are earplugs provided! We all slept incredibly well here and none of us has ever experienced such a well-equipped home. Everything and anything you could possibly want or need, just to hand where you would expect it to be. It's hard to put your finger on what exactly makes this such a special and exceptional place, without filling several pages! Not only is it an exquisite, wonderfully clean home, set in a tropical paradise, but such care and thought has gone into making it, and such kindness in catering to each guest. The result is a unique and exceptional experience filled with a profound and intangible spirit of Aloha - it was a privilege to stay and we look forward to returning very soon! We have already recommended to friends who have booked it for their stay in the New Year.
Wonderful, Best on Island
Hale Pono is a unique gem. Luxury and care to every detail in a most unlikely, wild and beautiful, jungle setting. The house is outstanding, high-quality everything, and the hosts were the best we have ever had. All the reviews are right. If you can book Hale Pono vacation rental, do! It is located in a great spot for exploring the island. Right by the two main highways and easy access to everything. The rough Hawaii-track leading in along half a mile of green, tropical flower-filled nature reminded us every day where we were and how to relax and get into the Hawaii pace of life. Aloha and pono abounds here, cannot recommend highly enough
Hale Pono is not a vacation home, it's an experience
Hale Pono is not your typical vacation rental. It is a home-away-from-home, tucked away in the rainforest, where coqui frogs and crickets sing you to sleep, the dark skies beckon you to count even the faintest stars, and roosters crow to start the day. Stay here and you will experience the true rhythms of Hawai'i. Zoe is a lovely, warm hostess and does not miss any detail in welcoming you to Hale Pono and making sure you are comfortable. Before I stayed at Hale Pono, I remember reading a review that said that all future vacation rentals will be measured against this one. As a frequent business and personal traveler, I can't agree more.
Large, spacious and beautiful Home deep within Hawaiian rainforest.
Zoe was an amazing and gratious Host. Home was extremely we kept and stocked with everything you might need and More.
It is centrally located between Hilo and Volcano National Park. This allows for a good central point as a home base to explore the area.
Beautifully appointed, extremely welcoming
We were extremely impressed by the incredible personal touches that Zoe provided which included: a personalized welcome note with a box of sumptuous cookies as you walk in the door; fresh flowers; a pantry and fridge which were stocked with the basics as well as some mac and cheese, ½ dozen freshly laid eggs, water, jams, dressings and many other nice items that would keep you going if didn't have a chance to go to the groceries.
Zoe provided an abundance of high quality fresh linens and towels, the beds and furniture were very comfortable.
Zoe kept in touch with us throughout our stay and was very responsive to ensure our satisfaction.
The house is beautifully decorated, spotlessly clean and very well located for visiting the surrounding areas.
Thank you Zoe for a delightful stay
Hale Pono is located in a tranquil rural area where Tropical Rainforest meets Jungle its way down to the Ocean. Located on its own 3 Acre Ohia Forest lot, within a larger property, Hale Pono is very secluded. Its long driveway leads out to a gate on a traditional Hawaii Lava-Rock Track (paved road starts in 0.7 mile towards Volcano and 0.5 mile towards the ocean) . The area is very quiet, very green, always in bloom. Fruit trees abound and the neighborhood is friendly and laid back. Ancient ohia forest screens the ocean view. There are local walks in nature, breathtaking ocean walks, wonderful Panaewa Zoo and Botanical Gardens, Mac Nut farm tours 15 minutes drive , Hilo (paddle-board, surf, swim in the turquoise ocean with giant turtles, spinner dolphins and whales, visit museums, botanical gardens, Imiloa Observatory, waterfalls) and Pahoa (wonderful, unique old town, great charaters, great eateries) are 20 minutes drive, Volcano National Park is 25 minutes drive, most attractions (Warm Ponds, Snorkelling, Lava Tree State Park, Mauna Kea Observatory, Swimming with wild Spinner Dolphins, Black Sand Beach, South Point, Horse-riding in magical Waipio, Rodeos at Parker Ranch, etc.) are between 25-90 minutes drive. There's plenty of parking at Hale Pono - we recommend a 4x4 or bicycle for the road and for widening your scope of adventure - a 4x4 is needed for Mauna Kea stargazing and some of the more spectacular remote beaches. There are places to hire bikes in Hilo and Hale Pono's shuttle can ride you there. Older local 4x4s can be rented for $225 per week and be waiting for you at the airport or delivered to Hale Pono. The Hele-On bus travels the island, can carry 2 bicycles and is only $1 per trip! In general there is plenty of parking at reasonable rates (or free) everywhere on the island
***PLEASE NOTE, Hale Pono is NOT located in Volcano Village, it is about 20 miles down Highway 11 towards Hilo, in a warmer and less damp climate (lower altitude, closer to ocean)***
