Our chalet is 1600 square feet, and easily handles 6-8 people. We have 175 acres and overlook many more in our private valley. Our deck elevation is at 9000 feet. We are completely solar powered with a backup generator. All brand new stainless appliances. The master suite is in the full height loft and there is a guest bedroom on the first floor. We have two glass walk in showers, one in the master suite and the other on the first floor. Plenty of room to throw down a couple of sleeping bags in front of the fireplace. Besides the breathtaking views from all directions, we are proud of our beautiful moss rock fireplace, the rock all taken right off our property. Plenty of firewood cut and ready to use. We have Direct TV and Wild Blue internet.

About Walter Scherer
We are an adventuresome couple that love to hike and explore the surrounding area. We have two Golden Retrievers that are constantly by our side. Walter loves to duck hunt with his trusty retriever as this area has plenty to offer. Winter or summer the area is packed with adventures not to mention the wild horses that Bonnie continues to photograph and write their stories.
Walter Scherer purchased this Chalet in 2010
Why Walter Scherer chose San Luis
I fell in love with the Sangre de Christo range while in the Boy Scouts and later when I served in the army at Ft. Carson, Colorado. I also was in the National Ski Patrol and skiied at most of the areas in Colorado. When we found our property, that was it!
What makes this Chalet unique
Wild Horse Mesa is in the beautiful San Luis Valley near the community of San Luis, the oldest town in Colorado. We are 42 miles from Taos, New Mexico, 54 miles from Alamosa, Colorado. We are surrounded by mountains. Taos, New Mexico is a renowned ski resort and artist colony. Native American Pow Wows, baloon festivals, film festivals, and other activities attract thousands of visitors each year. Red River, New Mexico, is a wild west type of town with great trout fishing, skiing, hiking, and fun times. Fort Garland, Colorado is the former site of Kit Carson's fort. San Luis, Colorado has the beautiful stations of the cross on top of a mountain reached by foot, or by automobile. These stations are duplicates of those in St. Peters Basilica, in Rome, Italy. The Great Sand Dunes National Monument is just an hour away. Don't miss the breathtaking trip along the Rio Grande River on the Rio Grande Railway.

A perfectly relaxing week
This is the perfect place to come to get away from the crowd, the traffic, and the heat. Just unplug and relax. The wonderful bonus is as you sit on the deck enjoying the beauty you get to see the wild horses. A close neighbor named Judy Barnes gave us a wonderful tour of the area and showed us where to see the most horses. They were beautiful to see and I enjoyed taking photos. We loved our time there. The first night we were so amazed at the absolute quiet. The house is gorgeous and comfortable, you can tell much love and thought was given to it in building with the large windows to view the sunrise and the mountains.
