About Janis Beatty
I started the business, Watson Place, in 2012. I'm a retired educator and have lived in Saranac Lake with my husband since 1996. I love living in the Adirondack Mountains with its beautiful scenery. I walk, bicycle, canoe, and snowshoe. I love to read, especially non-fiction. My husband is also retired, but maintains a fine art photography business. We worked hard getting our tourist accommodation ready and have been told it's beautiful.
Janis Beatty purchased this Apartment in 1996
Why Janis Beatty chose Town of North Elba
We were living in the Saratoga Springs area and my husband Barry had been traveling around the Adirondacks as part of his work. During these tours, he found that the scenery and ambiance of the area appealed strongly to his creative side. When a job opportunity presented itself in Tupper Lake, he immediately took it and the hunt for a place to live began. After exploring possibilities in the Tupper Lake and Lake Placid areas, we decided to concentrate on Saranac Lake, which we felt had more to offer us. The village has a very appealing downtown, with a host of historic buildings and several art galleries, along with the expected offices, restaurants and shops. We thoroughly enjoy the area and take advantage of the hiking, bicycling and canoeing opportunities when we can.
What makes this Apartment unique
We decided to buy this home after looking at several others in and around Saranac Lake. The Arts and Craft style of the building suited our tastes and offered some unique touches. The house is located on a hill and surrounded by mature evergreens, with a few birch and maples added for color. We also own a wooded property across the street, which adds to the feeling of privacy that we enjoy here. It was also fun to discover that our place had been home to the actress Veronica Lake when she was a child.

Great people and a great weekend! We will be coming back here in the summer. That's if they aren't booked up. We've already told all our friends about the Watson house.
Glad that you had such a great time. We look forward to your return. There's a lot to do in the summer. Thanks for spreading the word about Watson Place!
Quiet beautiful surroundings yet walking distance to town
Weekend in Saranac Lake to enjoy some hiking and Winter Carnival - this place was perfect from the moment we arrived parking right at the front door which was so convenient because it was cold out. Janis and Barry met us at the property to show us around and also provided some info on the local events happening that weekend. The property is very clean, cookies delicious, the wooded area around the property was perfect so peaceful. We did some hiking, went to the Winter Carnival and also went to see a play at the Pendragon Theatre. Seeing as it was February we were not able to take advantage of the fire pit but what a great addition to the rental. You will not be disappointed with a stay at the Watson House!
We are so happy that you enjoyed yourselves and took advantage of what Saranac Lake and the Adirondacks have to offer. It sounds as if you experienced a lot-Winter Carnival, hiking, and our wonderful Pendragon Theatre. Thanks so much for visiting!
Cozy and Conveniant
We enjoyed our stay very much. The location was great and it was nice and quiet. It had everything we needed. A great place for two. Thanks for the fine hospitality!
Glad that you enjoyed yourselves. Thanks!
Very, very nice apartment in a great Net York village.
In town, in the wild apartment is located in a quiet neighborhood near downtown Saranac Lake village. Parking right at the front door is convenient. The garden around the house invokes the northern forest. The back yard has a fire pit, gas grill and seating for four. The apartment interior is nicely decorated with Adirondack style and wonderful photographs of the local outdoors. Great one person kitchen and bathroom with the perfect shower. Very comfortable with plenty of room for a couple. We would return for a longer stay.
Thanks so much for your nice review. We look forward to hosting you again!
This is a beautiful apartment in a great location; very close to Saranac Lake, Lake Placid, and lots of hiking. The owners are very gracious and hospitable; this was our second stay and we would return. The apartment has more space than many--a separate living/dining room in addition to the kitchen and bedroom--although the kitchen is small. However, it is well-equipped and maintained.
Thank you so much, Rebecca, for your wonderful review. We both enjoyed seeing you for your second visit!
A gem of an apartment
Nicely decorated and everything I need. Lovely hosts. My fifth year staying here. Perfect for a solo getaway.
We always love having you back. Your kayaking adventures are inspirational!
A wide variety of activities and entertainment are available here in the heart of the Adirondacks. In the winter months, cross country skiing trails are numerous and nearby, and Whiteface, the Olympic downhill mountain, is 30 minutes away. A 15-minute walk along Lake Flower brings you to downtown Saranac Lake, with its art galleries, shops and restaurants. Live theater is a year-round happening at Pendragon, located just three blocks from the rental. New Year's Eve features First Night Saranac Lake, with a variety of music and other entertainments occurring around downtown. At Midnight, fireworks light up the sky over Lake Flower. During February, Saranac Lake is home to the historic Winter Carnival, a 10-day celebration of the season featuring numerous athletic events, competitions for the fun of it, parades and fireworks. The Ice Palace, centerpiece of the carnival, is located on the shore of Lake Flower, a five minute walk from Watson Place. The Ninety Miler, an annual canoe and kayak race from Old Forge to Saranac Lake held in September, concludes at Riverside Park on Lake Flower. The unique Adirondack Carousel, where visitors ride on carved Adirondack animals, insects and birds, is open all year and located downtown near the Union Depot. The Adirondack Scenic Railway runs between the Union Depot and the Station in Lake Placid during the summer and fall. If you're driving, the Olympic village of Lake Placid is a short 10-minute drive away. The Lake Placid Center for the Arts features gallery exhibits, dance, theater and music performances and Friday night independent movie showings. The Olympic Center, setting for the 'Miracle on Ice' in 1980, and the Olympic Museum located there, are open for your exploration. Rarely does a week go by during the winter when a major event isn't happening. Ski jumping, bobsled and luge competitions, hockey tournaments and other skating events all keep things exciting in Lake Placid. The Wild Center, a museum of the Natural History of the Adirondacks, is a beautiful 25-minute drive away in Tupper Lake, while the Adirondack Museum is a drive of approximately an hour in Blue Mountain Lake.
