About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths (Sleeps 6)

Welcome to Dockside. This comfortable and spacious house in Southwest Harbor, Maine, is located in a pleasant and shady residential neighborhood, and overlooks one of the most gorgeous harbors in the area. In this setting on the harbor, you can enjoy your own little section of rocky beach right on the working waterfront. There are a variety of restaurants in town, a pleasant ten- minute walk away, or Beal's Lobster Pier at the other end of Clark Point Road, also within walking distance.

Southwest Harbor is a friendly year-round town that offers conveniences such as a library, banks, post office, grocery stores and medical clinics, as well as art galleries and gift shops, bike rentals, restaurants and coffee shops, in a quieter setting that avoids the crowds and noise of Bar Harbor, which is a 20-minute drive away. Within a few miles drive in either direction from the house, there are beautiful hiking trails in Acadia National Park, some along the ocean, or a pond, others up mountains offering great views. You can walk right from the house through quiet neighborhood streets to a causeway over a millpond, with views out to the ocean.

On the main level of the house, facing the harbor, there is a living room with a fireplace, and a well-equipped kitchen with dining table. At the back of the house is a large sitting room with comfortable couches, cable television and a fireplace. On the same level are a queen bedroom, and a bathroom with shower stall.

A large deck facing the harbor spans the width of the house, and offers comfortable outdoor seating and a small table that seats 4.

Upstairs there is a spacious master bedroom with king bed and large windows overlooking the harbor, a second bedroom with two twin beds, and a bathroom with a bathtub/shower unit. A washer and coin-op dryer are located in the daylight basement.

In 2015 we replaced the dishwasher, refrigerator, range, barbecue grill, clothes washer and dryer.

The parking area in front of the house is shared with the tenants of the building in the rear of the property.

The property overlooks the harbor facing south and enjoys beautiful breezes off the water.

The house gets better every year.

  • 5 of 5

We've been staying at Dockside for 6 years now. Each time we go the house has had a few updates while retaining its funky lived in atmosphere. The kitchen is well equipped, it's an easy walk to town, and the harbor view can't be beat. Southwest Harbor is definitely the place to stay on MDI.

Hidden gem

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely rental house. Spotlessly clean, tastefully decorated, and right on the harbor. Perfect for a family of four. John and Leann were very thoughtful hosts, and have set the house up so that it has everything you need. Can't recommend it highly enough. Southwest Harbor is a great quiet town, and the house is a 5-minute walk from the stores and restaurants.

Nice comfortable home

  • 5 of 5

Great location (Southwest Harbor) within walking distance to lobster pounds, restaurants, and the small village of Southwest Harbor. Provided a great home base for the week of exploring the island. Our family has stayed here twice and would stay again.

Wonderful place!

  • 5 of 5

Dockside is a charming spacious vintage farmhouse-feel, dog friendly home situated over a quiet scenic working harbor in Southwest Harbor, Maine. The fancy boats dock in other parts of Mt. Desert Island.

This is a great place for a quiet interlude, or a family retreat, or both.

The location is a 5 minute walk to Beal’s Lobster House, which never fails to deliver flawlessly (yummy steamed lobsters and lobster rolls). (Beat the line by ordering online and enjoying your lobster takeout on Dockside’s ample deck, enjoying the quiet and the view.)

The location also is an easy 10 minute walk into town, with great breakfasts at Sips and dinners at Café 2 “(the dinner iteration of Eat-a-Pita on Main Street), and also the wonderful blueberry muffins homemade at Sawyer’s grocery.

The Bass Harbor lighthouse and other hiking trails are nearby by car, while Acadia’s trails and beach can be a 30 minute drive away. The wonderful MDI free Island bus stops 2 minutes’ walk from Dockside and will take you to Bar Harbor, Acadia, and almost anywhere else with a transfer. Dog friendly trails and large dog-friendly pond at “Little Long Pond” are about a half hour drive.

Kayaking is available right at the dock (the house includes two kayaks and life-preservers). The house’s water front is not a beach. Rather, it is covered with water at high tide, and can be muddy at low tide, hence it is not suitable for beach chair lounging / reading (though the home has fold-up canvas chairs should one want to sit on that area or the lawn behind it to enjoy the boats zig-zagging and bird watching.)

The ferry to Little Cranberry Island and its restaurant departs a two-minute walk from Dockside.

The house is fully equipped. The attentive owners Leanne and John, leave it well stocked with basics and many things you would expect to buy. In fact, off season, Dockside is Leanne’s and John’s residence.

The house has reclaimed barn-wood floors, the crevices of which need regular vacuuming. The lobster wholesale wharf which borders Dockside at the water’s edge, is closed and quiet. Reportedly, it is for sale, so it may come back again as a commercial establishment, or as a tear-down for a new home, or remain as-is. Worth inquiring as to its status.

We, with our dog, enjoyed this charming home for four weeks. Scenic, quiet, convenient, and owners who want you to be happy! (There was daily construction noise from a home being build next-door, but John did his best to have it limited.)

Great vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We visited Southwest Harbor from Florida and stayed at this home for 2 weeks. We thought it was a very cute & charming house with a beautiful view of the harbor. There was 6 of us with 2 dogs and found plenty of quiet space to read or be on the computer as well as room for family card games with our son who is stationed there in the Coast Guard. John & Leanne made sure we had everything we needed for a very comfortable stay-even baked us cookies. Thanks for a great vacation! The O'Connor Family

Really Great!

  • 5 of 5

Easily a 5-star rating! We had a group of 6, and all of us loved this place. From the great location and great views of the harbor to helpful details and information provided by the owners, everything was just great. Downstairs offers a nice kitchen, bathroom, one bedroom, an open room with great views of Southwest Harbor, and a cozier, quieter TV room with lots of good books. Upstairs offers two bedrooms (one with a harbor view; one quiet and cozy) and a charming bath. The basement rounds things out with a washer and dryer and exit to the kayaks provided. There's also a deck for enjoying the outdoors. The owners have thought about everything you might need, and they were friendly and easy to work with. The main "downtown" of Southwest Harbor is about 3/4 mile away, a delightful walk--don't miss pizza and apple pie at The Quiteside Cafe; Sips and Pita (restaurants) are also recommended. A short drive away, be sure to hit Thurston's Lobster Pound. Nearby, in Bass Harbor, Island Cruises provides an excellent 2-hour boat tour that is a great introduction to the island and the lobster culture. And of course there's always Acadia National Park!

If you're planning a trip to Acadia or MDI, be sure to consider the "quiet" (western) side of the island and especially consider Dockside on the Harbor. I can guarantee we will be back!
