"Casa Alta" (also known as Casalta) occupies a commanding site with sweeping views of the countryside nearby and of the distant hills of the Arno valley. The impressive stone house maintains its rustic character yet is cozy and welcoming, with five double bedrooms, two fireplaces, common rooms, outdoor spaces for relaxing or dining, and a large pool. Just half an hour from Florence, it's an ideal spot to unwind after a day of sightseeing, or simply to get away and enjoy the timeless beauty of the Tuscan landscape.
Casa Alta (also known as Casalta) is a two-storey rectangular stone house whose original nucleus, possibly a fortified tower, dates to the 13th or 14th century. Over time it was modified and expanded to accommodate new residential and agricultural needs, and for most of its existence it was a working farmhouse. Situated some 200 meters below the main road, and reached by a curving driveway through the woods, the house is secluded, private, and very quiet.
Inside, the house’s high wood-beamed ceilings, terracotta tiled floors, stone features, rustic wooden doors, and abundant windows create a harmonious, warm atmosphere characteristic of a classic Tuscan country home. On the ground floor an open loggia frames the large arched entryway to the house. This floor contains a vestibule, a well-equipped kitchen and dining area with a fireplace and access to a small patio, a pantry with laundry facilities, a full bathroom, a sitting room, and two double bedrooms. Each bedroom has direct access to a broad scenic terrace. On the upper level, reached by an old stone staircase, there is a spacious double living room with a massive fireplace and stone lavabo, three double bedrooms, a study, and two full bathrooms. All the rooms have large windows with wonderful views.
Outdoor spaces around the house include the small patio off the kitchen on the east side, and on the west, a covered portico – handy in inclement weather – with a wood-burning oven. On the south side, with magnificent views over the valley and up to 50 miles beyond, there is a small terrace with a shady pergola as well as a large patio, outfitted for sunning or al fresco dining under a pergola. In front of the portico and main entrance to the west, a stone stairway leads down to the sizeable 14 x 7 meter pool. An open park with benches and shade trees enhances the sense of spaciousness and tranquility.
Additional things to note: I live in a small, autonomous apartment at the back of the house. Both the interior spaces and outdoor areas of Casa Alta have been designed to ensure complete privacy for our guests, who enjoy exclusive access to the spaces and facilities described above. Two friendly cats also occupy the apartment and may occasionally wander into the main house. As for myself, my presence will be very discreet, but I am more than happy to assist guests at any time and in any way possible. Casa Alta also welcomes diversity and is gay-friendly.
