Drive down the peaceful neighborhood street to reach the lovely home, situated right at the end of the street. Upon arrival, you'll immediately feel at home in tropical paradise - the lush landscaping features a papaya and tangerine trees that surround the home.

Step inside the Hilo house to make yourself at home in 2,300 square feet of comfortable living space, featuring inviting decor and and numerous windows providing views of the beautiful outdoors.

With a plush couch, chairs, a cable TV with DVR, card games, puzzles, and books, the living area offers the perfect spot to lounge around during your downtime. For more fun, step into the entertainment room, where a combo-game table with Foosball, air hockey and billiards encourages friendly competition among your travel companions.

When you’re hungry, make your way to the fully equipped kitchen, complete with everything you need to prepare your favorite recipes. Enjoy your home-cooked meals gathered around the 6-person dining table.

For an al fresco dining experience, head outside to the elevated covered deck, (shared with the studio on the property) where you’ll enjoy 360-degree ocean and mountain views, along with cool breezes.

- The Big Island of Hawaii is over 4,000 square miles. The volcanic activity is affecting less than 10 square miles, and it is in a very remote location

- The poor air quality is largely affecting the area directly around the eruption, with higher levels of sulfur dioxide and small amounts of ash. This is 33 miles away from Hilo, and unless you are extremely sensitive or have respiratory issues, you will not be affected

- Vog levels may have increased slightly, but not considerably noticeable as this is an everyday part of island living. Lava flows are a normal, ongoing occurrence on this island as The Big Island has 2 active volcanoes, Mauna Loa and Kilauea

- Tourist activities are mainly planned around the lava flow/volcano through helicopter tours, hikes through the crater, boat tours to watch lava flow into the ocean, etc

Old Hawaii charm

Our family of five found this the perfect location...a slight peek at the ocean with morning coffee from the deck, quiet end of cul-de-sac location, cows and goats in the pasture next door. What's not to love!

The rooms are huge and welcoming, kitchen and bathrooms well stocked. The lockbox system works perfectly. An easy drive to Hilo. Convenient to Volcanoes and the Puna district.

This would be a five-star review, but for a few minor repairs which are needed. Having said that, if you can't appreciate the charm and warmth of Hawaii which lives in this property, there are luxury condos on the Kona side. Our family loved the more authentic ambience of this home.

Place needs some major upgrades

I guess that I have been pretty spoiled by my previous rentals through VRBO, because I have never provided any real negative comments about a rental property until this one. First, I would not recommend renting this property to anyone, especially a friend or relative. There were many issues that needed addressing:

1. We only ever had luke-warm showers at best, and on our final day, we had no hot water. We found out that the single water heater was shared between two units, and it was on a timer that only allowed it to be heated for a few hours/day. The other times, it relies on solar heat, which doesn't work when it is raining, as it did for the 3 days we were there. The owner called a handy-man to come fix it as we were leaving, but I don't know what can be done unless the entire hot water system gets upgraded.

2. We saw several large cockroaches in the kitchen. I would recommend a regular pest control service. We found a lot of pellets/poop from what appeared to be mice in the kitchen pots and bowls, so we had to wash everything by hand before using.

3. Musty/mildew smell in the living room. Most likely from the high humidity environment from being on the rainy side of the island.

4. Kitchen needs some upgrades. There were only 4 each of plates and bowls, which is not enough. Can opener was broken. Pots & pans were worn out.

5. Furniture could use some upgrades. Kitchen table had 2 old worn-out desk chairs on rollers. Kitchen cabinets and countertops appear to be original when the house was built. Den had a cheap folding card table and chairs.

6. Bathroom tub and floor was not cleaned very well before our arrival

7. The outside washer & dryer were not very convenient, considering they were barely covered by the roof, and we would get rained on if we were to use them (which we didn't).

8. Beds were very uncomfortable, with no box springs. We felt like we were sleeping on the floor. Pillows were flat and uncomfortable. Bed linens were cheap.

9. Towels were thin and worn out.

10. Several other little things that need attention: loose toilet seat, clock in middle bedroom did not work, carpet in living room was torn.

For the amount of money that we paid to stay here, we could have rented a much nicer property.

Owner's Response: Joe, we appreciate your feedback and take your concerns very seriously. We have passed your feedback along to the homeowner who has let us know that these concerns have each been addressed with the cleaner so they do not recur for future guests. In regards to the water heater, the homeowner would have been more than happy to address the issues earlier had they been made aware and they always encourage guests to reach out with any issues they have! Additionally, the homeowners have replaced the breaker to prevent this from recurring again. There are three sets of dishes in the unit, but we apologize if this was not adequate. The homeowners are looking into upgrading the kitchen appliances and appreciate your feedback. There are also new pillows and towels, and the toilet seat will be tightened. The clock in the living room that you mentioned is fully functioning, but was simply unplugged. Lastly, the homeowners have consistently received comments that the beds are very comfortable even thought they don't have pillow tops, but we apologize if they were not to you liking. Nice space in need of some updates

The space in the house is well layed out and quite useable. The kitchen is well equipped (except missing a broiler pan and working toaster). There is comfortable seating in the living room and the dining tables/chairs are fine.

There are lots of small maintenance issues that need addressing (e.g. outside light doesn't work making using the lockbox a challenge). There washer/dryer are shared with another unit and are outside making it a bit 'icky' to do laundry with the local lizards watching.

The place is on the outskirts of Hilo and in a place where it might be quiet. Hoever, the neighboring cows and frogs are really noisy - enough that the host do provide ear plugs.

All in all, it work for us (2 couples) and was functional but not particularly glamorous. The main 'wow' factor is the foosball table - which was fun.
