Walk Away Stays purchased this Cottage in 2016
Why Walk Away Stays chose Downtown Charleston
This unit is the carriage house located behind the main house where the owners live. It is nestled in a quiet side street, but still within walking distance to everything upper King Street has to offer.
What makes this Cottage unique
This unit contains a rice bed in the bedroom. The history of the rice bed originates in 1750, when furniture craftsman Thomas Elfe received a commission to design several pieces of furniture for a wealthy landowner in North Carolina. One of the requested pieces included the rice bed, also known as the Charleston rice bed or a plantation bed. The originator of the rice bed, Thomas Elfe, was based in Charleston, South Carolina. A highly sought-after tradesperson and one of the premier cabinetmakers of the 18th century, Elfe followed the Chippendale school of design in his furniture pieces. Rice beds were primarily designed to allow for better air circulation during steamy summers. The mattress frame is high off the ground, while the headboard is low and sometimes completely removable. Before air conditioning, beds were moved to the center of the room during hot weather for a cooler sleep. In winter, a bed could be “dressed”—draped with a canopy above and bed skirts below—for warmth. Posts stand at the four corners of the bed. These rounded posts contain elaborate carvings -- primarily of rice or tobacco, as these two crops were prevalent in the South at the time and provided a good source of income to plantation owners.

Cute, unique place!
Loved our stay in the carriage house! It was the perfect size for us, spotless, and all the amenities we could want. Loved having offstreet parking. Unique layout of the space worked perfectly for us. It was well stocked with linens, lots of extra (and good quality) pillows, and great dishes. We'll stay here again, bcs the location is great and it's dog friendly!
Perfect carriage house for 2 + our dog!
We loved staying in the Carriage House! It was in a great location to get around Charleston: super close to downtown, easy to get on the bridge to go to Folly Beach / James Island. There is a coffee shop around the corner (hello, Halo!) that is open only during the week. Fuel around the corner is a great spot for cocktails and lunch or dinner (also dog friendly). The carriage house was perfect to relax between our adventures. Not that we did much cooking because there are so many delicious restaurants around, but the kitchen had some good basic tools if you wanted to prepare a meal. There is even a cute little patio to have a drink outside to relax.
Note: the driveway is a bit narrow so you'll be happy for back up cameras if you're not used to a skinny driveway.
Cottage in Charleston
All that it was advertised to be. Conveniently located. Nice area. Very clean. Wasn't pleased about limitation on towels. Not well cooled.
It is great to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us. The location is very convenient to anything that you could want to do in Charleston. We look forward to hosting you on your next trip!
Great location, comfortable converted carriage house
We enjoyed our stay in this converted carriage house. It had everything we needed for a 4 day exploration of Charleston and was convenient to the free Dash busses that went all over the downtown area. There is a long flight of stairs going up to the bedroom which could be a problem for someone with mobility issues. We had a couple of maintenance problems which were quickly taken care of. We would stay here again.
This converted downtown carriage house is like taking a step back in time but with all of the modern day amenities. 4B is conveniently located to allow for easy and quick downtown transportation. We are glad to hear that our maintenance team could quickly accommodate a fix for you and that your stay was not interrupted. We look forward to hosting you on your next visit to downtown Charleston!
Very cozy and close to everything.
Very nice and cozy place. We loved the convienence. We loved the bed and soft sheets. The quietness made it very relaxing.
We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay with us. We strive to make sure every guest's stay is as cozy, home like and convenient as possible. We look forward to hosting you on your next visit to Charleston.
I was disappointed with this property. First, the Wifi service was terrible. I had to wait over half an hour just to email someone. Every time I logged on to my laptop to research things to do in Charleston or to research for my writing, I had to reconnect and wait sometimes as long as 40 minutes for the internet to work. And even when it started to work, it was slow and intermittent. It was like that the whole time, even after the property owner reset the router on the second day we were there.
I was also disappointed with the pull out sofa bed. The mattress was not comfortable and the springs made noise every time you twitched so we did not end up using it. And I know this is an old house, but it could have been cleaner. It was surface clean but not deep down clean.
That being said, this property is in a nice location, near several delicious restaurants and in walking distance to many attractions. If you don't mind what I minded, then you would certainly like it better.
So glad the location was just what you thought it would be!
We're sad to hear that you were disappointed with your stay at our 4B property. We are aware of the wifi connection being fussy & causing you some issues during your stay and we are working to have this resolved so that it does not negatively affect anyone else's visit. As far as the sofa bed, while we do strive for all of our guests to be as comfortable as possible with this sofa bed there are limitations on the mattress alternatives. Thank you for bringing these issues to our attention and we hope that you overall enjoyed your stay and will be back to visit us soon here in beautiful Charleston.
With a close proximity to King Street, this unit is within walking distance to some of Charleston's most widely acclaimed bars and restaurants. Charleston is a very walk-able city, however public transportation is easily available. A car is recommended for those who like to venture out. There is a free trolley that travels down King Street, and plenty of cabs and rickshaws all over town.
