About Neil

We fell in love with Louis Head and its beautiful natural surroundings when we stayed at A Blue House when it was a B&B. We built our home nearby, and purchased and lovingly restored A Blue House in 1996 with updating last summer. We love the sandy beach, the community, the peacefulness, and the outdoor activities. Our children have grown up here and are now teenagers.

Neil purchased this house in 1996

Why Neil chose Nova Scotia

A Blue House embodies traditional Nova Scotia architecture with updated amenities, including a large great room that overlooks the ocean. It is a large, comfortable home in a spectacular setting and only a few seconds walk to the sandy beach.

What makes this house unique

One can spend time here getting away from it all, or use the home as a base for excursions to the many tourist destinations that are a short driving distance away. Every visitor has enjoyed their stay. Your hosts strive to make sure you are comfortable and have a pleasant vacation.

Wonderful peaceful location

  • 5 of 5

We had a week of fantastic weather and enjoyed exploring the Shelburne area with our family. Our two young girls, 18 months and nearly 4, loved the beaches including the one right on our front door. The house was fantastic and Neil even helped us with a boost after we left the lights on in our car!

Wonderful location, very clean, and a perfect family vacation.

Beautiful house, lovely property

  • 4 of 5

We loved our stay. The weather was great, and nothing beats the rolling fog burning off while you're enjoying your cup of morning coffee. We saw deer and a hummingbird among other animals and birds. The house is well kept up and a good size for a family. We liked our stay. The only drawbacks are the bugs, which were fierce at times, and the remoteness of the property, which was great for the most part but it's a half hour drive if you want to pop out for lunch or Tim Hortons. Great place!

Owner's Response: We are glad you enjoyed your stay and the surrounding wildlife. The home is quiet and peaceful, without easy access to some conveniences like fast-food places. We have local alternatives and we often head to the Lock, Stock and Barrel store between the home and Lockeport for ice cream cones. We also strive to make the home comfortable and well-kept with the quaintness of a heritage property. Come back and visit! It is a treasured spot and the ocean view and water changes throughout the day.

Beautiful location, renovated traditional house

  • 5 of 5

We loved our vacation at The Blue House. From the large picture windows in the open living/dining room, the house has a lovely view on a natural pond and its own shallow sandy beach. A beautiful public sandy beach is a 10 minute walk or 1 minute drive away. The virtue of the shallow beach is that the water temperature is comfortable. Not a given in Nova Scotia! Two restaurants and a surprisingly well stocked country grocery are in Lockport, 20 minutes away, and all of the vacationer's necessities are in the picturesque harbor town of Shelburne, 40 minutes away.

The house has the advantage of a downstairs bedroom (2 twins) and a full bathroom. So it is a great choice for families traveling with seniors or others who might be more comfortable not having to climb stairs. The kitchen is well equipped. The internet works. The bathrooms are modern. Neil and Michelle are obliging and gracious hosts, attentive to any guest needs but not at all intrusive. We hope to return to The Blue House.

A blue house.

  • 5 of 5

The Blue House was absolutely beautiful. So quiet peaceful and relaxing. It has everyrhing you need. The beach was wonderful for swimming seal watching collecting sand dollars are just enjoying the view. The wildlife we saw included a deer with her twin fawns, a muskrat, a rabbit with babies, a variety of birds , jelly fish etc. The people were very friendly and helpful. Cant wait to visit again. Missing the ocean and the beautiful breath taking sunrises we saw from our window! Thanks Neil & Michelle.

Delightful Stay!

  • 5 of 5

We had a delightful stay at The Blue House at Louis Head! Michelle and Neil have set up a beautiful vacation rental for a family to enjoy! My parents (in their 80s) stayed in the downstairs room while my 9yr old and I stayed upstairs. There is PLENTY of room for a large family with all of the amenities one might need during a long stay. All you really need to do is provide your food and favorite beverage and you will be well set up for a wonderful time. It is about 15 minutes from Lockeport where we had a fantastic lunch at Lockeport Landing (Tell Nan & Andrew the family from Billings Montana sent you!). Shelburne is not very far either with lots of fun things to do. My son LOVED the beach at the house which was shallow enough he could explore without me hovering. We saw crabs, snails, lots of birds, shrimp, little fish, etc. Near the house he even caught a frog all by himself! We saw a deer cross in the front yard. A short hike to the Atlantic ocean yields great views. This is a wonderful home if you are into a relaxing place to stay while exploring! Neil & Michelle were available in case we needed anything and the binder they have has great information on local things to do and places to eat. Everyone was super friendly and had lots of great ideas. We hope to visit again!
