About Neil

We fell in love with Louis Head and its beautiful natural surroundings when we stayed at A Blue House when it was a B&B. We built our home nearby, and purchased and lovingly restored A Blue House in 1996 with updating last summer. We love the sandy beach, the community, the peacefulness, and the outdoor activities. Our children have grown up here and are now teenagers.

Neil purchased this house in 1996

Why Neil chose Shelburne

A Blue House embodies traditional Nova Scotia architecture with updated amenities, including a large great room that overlooks the ocean. It is a large, comfortable home in a spectacular setting and only a few seconds walk to the sandy beach.

What makes this house unique

One can spend time here getting away from it all, or use the home as a base for excursions to the many tourist destinations that are a short driving distance away. Every visitor has enjoyed their stay. Your hosts strive to make sure you are comfortable and have a pleasant vacation.

Idyllic family vacation spot

  • 5 of 5

This was the perfect place for a much-needed week of relaxation. A Blue House was, as advertised, on a tranquil and isolated stretch of beachfront property. We walked every day at low tide across the sand-flats; it’s not often that one can be in a beautiful place for hours without meeting another soul! (Do, however, bring insect repellent!) We also enjoyed watching seals at sunset from the nearby breakwater. The 19th century house was nicely renovated, spacious and comfortable – we enjoyed its simplicity and the sense of time and history there. Neil and Michelle were responsive and accommodating without being at all intrusive. Great place for family time and getting away from it all; we would certainly return.

House with character and a view

  • 5 of 5

Drive to the house is a pleasant trip on its own. The grounds surrounding the house are spacious and picturesque. And then you enter the house itself... Generous living room space with picture-perfect view is of course one of the most amazing features. Kitchen is well-equipped, stairs to the second floor are very convenient, and second floor is very well planned. Special thanks to owners for keeping everything in perfect working condition - heating works great, shower is convenient, etc. - seems secondary, but important when you stay in the house for a week. There are also tasteful details that fit the house and emphasize its historical value (we especially liked an unfinished antique carpet on the wall).

The area has a lot to explore, and the owners (Neil and Michelle) provide a lot of information and tips about the area. My tip is: look at the binder with all the information owners provided, you will find a lot of great ideas there.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the kind words and helpful review. It is not only important to us to strive to make your vacation a perfect one, but to let future guests know what to expect. The binder is full of a lot of suggested activities, one could stay a month to do them all! Thank you, Kiril, and best of luck to you. Neil and Michelle

Wonderful peaceful location

  • 5 of 5

We had a week of fantastic weather and enjoyed exploring the Shelburne area with our family. Our two young girls, 18 months and nearly 4, loved the beaches including the one right on our front door. The house was fantastic and Neil even helped us with a boost after we left the lights on in our car!

Wonderful location, very clean, and a perfect family vacation.

Owner's Response: It is hard to describe how safe the beach is for children. The difference between high and low tide is about a half mile, so there is plenty of shallow water for the little ones and a sandy bottom for their feet. It is wonderful for family walks and for couples being able to take a leisurely stroll in a serene natural setting. And a quiet setting! Thank you for the nice words, come back and visit!

Beautiful house, lovely property

  • 4 of 5

We loved our stay. The weather was great, and nothing beats the rolling fog burning off while you're enjoying your cup of morning coffee. We saw deer and a hummingbird among other animals and birds. The house is well kept up and a good size for a family. We liked our stay. The only drawbacks are the bugs, which were fierce at times, and the remoteness of the property, which was great for the most part but it's a half hour drive if you want to pop out for lunch or Tim Hortons. Great place!

Owner's Response: We are glad you enjoyed your stay and the surrounding wildlife. The home is quiet and peaceful, without easy access to some conveniences like fast-food places. We have local alternatives and we often head to the Lock, Stock and Barrel store between the home and Lockeport for ice cream cones. We also strive to make the home comfortable and well-kept with the quaintness of a heritage property. Come back and visit! It is a treasured spot and the ocean view and water changes throughout the day.
