About Neil

We fell in love with Louis Head and its beautiful natural surroundings when we stayed at A Blue House when it was a B&B. We built our home nearby, and purchased and lovingly restored A Blue House in 1996 with updating last summer. We love the sandy beach, the community, the peacefulness, and the outdoor activities. Our children have grown up here and are now teenagers.

Neil purchased this house in 1996

Why Neil chose Nova Scotia

A Blue House embodies traditional Nova Scotia architecture with updated amenities, including a large great room that overlooks the ocean. It is a large, comfortable home in a spectacular setting and only a few seconds walk to the sandy beach.

What makes this house unique

One can spend time here getting away from it all, or use the home as a base for excursions to the many tourist destinations that are a short driving distance away. Every visitor has enjoyed their stay. Your hosts strive to make sure you are comfortable and have a pleasant vacation.

Beautiful location, renovated traditional house

  • 5 of 5

We loved our vacation at The Blue House. From the large picture windows in the open living/dining room, the house has a lovely view on a natural pond and its own shallow sandy beach. A beautiful public sandy beach is a 10 minute walk or 1 minute drive away. The virtue of the shallow beach is that the water temperature is comfortable. Not a given in Nova Scotia! Two restaurants and a surprisingly well stocked country grocery are in Lockport, 20 minutes away, and all of the vacationer's necessities are in the picturesque harbor town of Shelburne, 40 minutes away.

The house has the advantage of a downstairs bedroom (2 twins) and a full bathroom. So it is a great choice for families traveling with seniors or others who might be more comfortable not having to climb stairs. The kitchen is well equipped. The internet works. The bathrooms are modern. Neil and Michelle are obliging and gracious hosts, attentive to any guest needs but not at all intrusive. We hope to return to The Blue House.

A blue house.

  • 5 of 5

The Blue House was absolutely beautiful. So quiet peaceful and relaxing. It has everyrhing you need. The beach was wonderful for swimming seal watching collecting sand dollars are just enjoying the view. The wildlife we saw included a deer with her twin fawns, a muskrat, a rabbit with babies, a variety of birds , jelly fish etc. The people were very friendly and helpful. Cant wait to visit again. Missing the ocean and the beautiful breath taking sunrises we saw from our window! Thanks Neil & Michelle.

Delightful Stay!

  • 5 of 5

We had a delightful stay at The Blue House at Louis Head! Michelle and Neil have set up a beautiful vacation rental for a family to enjoy! My parents (in their 80s) stayed in the downstairs room while my 9yr old and I stayed upstairs. There is PLENTY of room for a large family with all of the amenities one might need during a long stay. All you really need to do is provide your food and favorite beverage and you will be well set up for a wonderful time. It is about 15 minutes from Lockeport where we had a fantastic lunch at Lockeport Landing (Tell Nan & Andrew the family from Billings Montana sent you!). Shelburne is not very far either with lots of fun things to do. My son LOVED the beach at the house which was shallow enough he could explore without me hovering. We saw crabs, snails, lots of birds, shrimp, little fish, etc. Near the house he even caught a frog all by himself! We saw a deer cross in the front yard. A short hike to the Atlantic ocean yields great views. This is a wonderful home if you are into a relaxing place to stay while exploring! Neil & Michelle were available in case we needed anything and the binder they have has great information on local things to do and places to eat. Everyone was super friendly and had lots of great ideas. We hope to visit again!

Owner's Response: We are so glad to hear that you had a wonderful stay and we enjoy sharing this special part of the world with our guests. And so special that your son was able to safely explore the area, the beach with its shallow water is ideal for the younger set. Come back and visit!

Happy Brits!

  • 5 of 5

We booked this rental online from the UK based on the photographs and descriptions of the house and property. What a wonderful choice! The house was very comfortable, spotlessly clean, very well stocked in terms of the kitchen, bedding and towels and space. The highlight of the house is the view through huge windows in the back living room space - stunning views out to the beach and the estuary. We enjoyed the BBQ and the seating area in the garden out the back overlooking the sea. Over the week we saw a rich variety of bird life, a deer that came across between the house and the beach every morning early and a couple of early evenings, seals and a wild turkey! The house was a good base for local beaches - Lockport being our favourite (great swimming); hiking through Kejimkujik National Park and dining in Shelburne. The Lobster Shack in Barrington was a great experience and dinner at Charlotte Lane Cafe and Crafts was so good (and expensive) it was repeated again later in the week (large portions). We enjoyed at least 2x a day, a walk along the beach taking photographs of birds and looking at stars at night - stunning Milky Way while we were there. I would recommend this property to anyone who wants a 'quiet' get away. If you want night life, lots of eating out and people around you - this is not the property for you. We wanted quiet and a 'real holiday' and that is what we experienced. The one thing that for some might be an issue (not for us!) was that there was no tv. Bring your own games as we did or just go out at night and watch the sky and you can easily entertain yourself. All in all, a lovely, restful holiday in a beautiful place and a lovely home. Would definitely return!

Owner's Response: How thoughtful of you to post your comments on our home and the area. It is a wonderful respite and gathering for a family or for couples. Over the years, we have had a few honeymoons and anniversary trips, so the place is special. Next season, we will be upgrading the TV and service for those rainy days and when the board games are exhausted. But don't forget to go outside to see the stars and, if you are lucky, see the full moon over the ocean on the other nights!

Wonderful vacation

  • 5 of 5

The Blue House is in a peaceful and beautiful location. It is a beautifully restored old house, with pine flooring on the first floor and carpet on the second. It's various nooks and crannies kept my children's imaginations running. It was clean and well-maintained. The kitchen was well equipped and there was lots of cupboard space for all your groceries. It was great to have no television connection for a week. There is a dvd player, games, puzzles and a great library.

The view was spectacular. We walked for miles on the beach collecting shells and sand dollars. The beach is flat and sandy. There is a great big rock just a little ways out which served as the perfect place to read a book or just relax and look at the view. Unfortunately, the water was cold when we were there but as the beach does not slope off it would have been perfect for swimming. Just around one point there was another beach you could walk to (Louis Head Campground) and around the other point there was a rocky area to explore. Louis Head Campground, a short walk on the beach when the tide is out or a short bike ride down the road has the best ice cream. My kids recommend the orange pineapple.

There was wildlife all around you to observe. We kayaked with seals, in the early morning saw a doe and her twin fawns on the beach, butterflies were everywhere and many days saw a partridge running ahead of us as we walked the path to the beach.

Nearby, for the adventurous, at high tide, there is a rope swing that you can jump off. At Johnston's Pond, you can surf with seals and collect interesting tide smoothed rocks. We even found a wild blueberry patch.

A short drive to Hunts Point, you can get the best fried clams in Nova Scotia.

The owners were very friendly.

If you are looking for a peaceful and relaxing vacation, love to connect with nature and don't mind driving a bit to get to shops, this is the house for you.
