About Mary Beyers

A 6th generation Eagle Harborite, I purchased my nearby home 38 years ago and later built this cottage for visits from my growing family who live elsewhere. I rent to guests during the weeks my family is not visiting.

Mary Beyers purchased this cottage in 1995

Why Mary Beyers chose Upper Peninsula

My body has had to live other places but my heart has always lived here and I and many others always return. My guests, including many MI Tech University grads, tend to return year after year as they fall in love with the Keweenaw, its beauty and variety of activities.

What makes this cottage unique

Guests enjoy a relaxing vacation in a newer cottage with many windows to view spectacular Lake Superior. Many visitors are descendants of former residents and remember fondly visiting their grandparents as youngsters.

Cozy

  • 5 of 5

The house was so comfortable....we went out every morning to peruse our surroundings, and it was breathtaking, from stone hunting, to shopping, to hiking and taking loads of pictures. Mary couldn't have been nicer, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay away...from our husbands! We only wished the fall colors would have been in full swing, but alas...we were a couple of weeks early!

Great experience - we will be back!

  • 5 of 5

This house is well-furnished and the location is ideal - it is just steps from the owner's private, stony beach on the main part of Lake Superior and a public, sandy swimming beach on the harbor in town. The Eagle Harbor lighthouse and Eagle Harbor Inn are also just steps away, as are the town park and schoolhouse museum. You really do not need a car to see anything in Eagle Harbor! We enjoyed the July 4 festivities and the world's best baked goodies at the Jam Pot, which is a scenic 5-10 minute drive down M26. We were amazed at how many different types of wild flowers could be seen along the short walk to the lake. As for the furnishings, the beds were comfortable and our two teen-aged daughters were happy to each have their own room. It was apparent that this house had been well kept; it was very clean upon our arrival. We found the owner Mary to be a friendly source of information on the area's attractions and history. This is truly a beautiful part of the world and we look forward to returning!

Fantastic vacation in the UP!

  • 5 of 5

This review is from our stay in August 2015. This was our second time staying at Northern Lights. Wonderful house with all the amenities. Plenty of room for all of us: two adults and three children. We enjoyed walking to the private rocky beach on Lake Superior and walking to the sandy beach of the harbor. Sailed in the harbor, canoed on Lake Bailey, played on the beach and hiked all over the UP! With three small children, having the cottage was great to be able to come back and relax, cook meals, sit on the deck, and just spend time as a family. The cottage is clean, comfortable and quiet! Enjoyed watching the freighters go by during the day and in the evening. Beautiful scenery. We love the UP and Lake Superior and Eagle Harbor has become a wonderful vacation destination for our family. It's quiet and perfect for us to just be while enjoying Lake Superior and the beauty of nature. Mary is a wonderful hostess and provides everything you need at the cottage!

A nice place

  • 3 of 5

We liked Eagle Harbor & this home was sufficient.

I am giving the property 3 stars only because I felt mislead. The property is not directly on the lake, and it has a limited lake view. We could slightly hear the lake from the property. It is a fairly simple walk to the lake, but further than I thought (from pictures & conversations). You can get to the lake via pathway or by simply walking into town directly to the harbor. It is about a block either way.

One of the bedrooms was separate from the rest of the apartment and this created a problem for us: we have 3 young children & one of us needed to stay in that bedroom because it was simply too far away from the rest of us(on the ground floor near the entry). Bringing sheets also proved to be difficult for us as we didn't have the sizes needed.

With that being said, the owners were receptive & friendly. This location & property just was not a good fit for us.

Eagle Harbor is a nice town; we visited the lighthouse. It was a quiet time of year with a lot of shops closed. Copper Harbor was close with a lot to do.

Owner's Response: Northern Lights Retreat has 250 feet of Lake Superior frontage. It is unlawful to build within 75' of the lake and also unwise given the power of Lake Superior; therefore the cottage is set back. The lake is easily reached by a path - as the lot is wooded, the view is somewhat blocked by trees. These renters had a kayak so it was beneficial for them to have the lake calm when they were here - otherwise they would not have been able to use it. Of course if the lake is calm the waves are not as loud in the cottage but they can still be heard - when the lake is rough the surf can be clearly heard. These guests have 3 children, 5, 3, and 1. I would think they would own twin sized sheets for the twin beds. They brought a pack and play for the baby so I do not understand why one of them had to stay in the 3rd bedroom. Obviously, Eagle Harbor was not a good fit for this family as they wanted shopping, bars and restaurants. Northern Lights Retreat is central to all the historical and recreational opportunities yet offers a quiet retreat in between adventures. I'm sorry we did not meet he needs of this family.
