Vacation in New Tazewell
Multiple things were broken inside the cabin including the table outside on the deck, one of the chairs in the dining room, and the garage door had a dent that was preventing it from going up and down. The toilet in the basement was broken as well. The place was not very clean at all, had ants coming up the drain in the kitchen for our first couple of nights there. The first thing noticed when we got to the cabin was the big sofa with all types of stains on it. The fridge was not very clean at all. Wasnt sure if the sheets in any of the room were clean because of blue stains inside the bunk beds in the basement that had sugar all over the place. The counters had to be whipped down right off the bat because they were very sticky. The place was a very nice cabin but needs a very deep clean. I enjoyed my stay very much but i would have gave a 5 star if the place had a gooooood cleaning.
First off, this home is beautiful on the inside. Great size for 4 adults and 6 children. The kids bunk beds were a real hit. The basement was super kid friendly, that is why we rented this cabin. The pictures of the inside are accurate. The outside pics...not so much. The pics look to have been taken in early spring. The property was very overgrown and there was no view. There was damage to the garage door. There was a note left informing us that the downstairs toilet seat was broken and maintenance was called. To my knowledge they didn't come. Also the upstairs bathtub doesn't seal and lets water drain. The shower on the main floor kinda dribbles, not much pressure. The patio furniture wasn't usable not only bc of the wasps but the table was broken.
Saw a mouse in basement on the first day, assumed the traps would get it, it didn't. I cleaned up mouse droppings every morning by the basement door out to the garage. Like i said we rented this cabin specifically bc it seemed kid friendly, we were wrong. The kids couldn't play outside bc of all the wasps. There were several active and large nests under the deck and on the corners of the house in the gutters. We did spray on our own, but ran out. I cleaned up dead and alive palmetto cockroach bugs. We had read a review about the bug problem and asked the owner if it was true, he said it was not true. It was true. I wouldn't recommend this cabin to a friend simply bc of the bug/rodent/wasp problem. There were positive things about this cabin to be fair. The kitchen appliances were new and worked great. Washer and dryer worked very well! The a/c pumped super cold air, perfect for when it was hot and muggy out. Easy access to the lake ( car ride). The ppl were super friendly and nothing but kind. The inside of the cabin has an awesome layout, and beautifully decorated. Could use a "deep clean". Yes, plan accordingly, there is a 20-30 minute drive into town. There is a landline in the cabin, GREAT idea since we had spotty cell reception.
Bug/ rodent problem
The good: the house is nicely decorated and the owner “James” was very friendly and helpful with questions (he called us the day of check-in to explain details about the property.) But then the bad started. As I was putting away our food and supplies for the week ants, mice droppings, mice traps and DeCon were found under sink. Ants also in the clean empty dishwasher. This prompted a call to the maintenance man to make him aware of the problem. He said he needed to contact the owner first before he did anything. No biggie we live in the country and have ants and spiders in our house from time to time and have also experienced an occasional mouse in our basement. ( glad my kids weren’t toddlers though with the traps and DeCon found under kitchen sink and in basement bathroom.)Then on Wednesday (we arrived Sunday night) my kids found a huge spider in basement (furry tennis ball size ) and I found a dead mouse in a trap in the laundry room. Roaches were also found on all three levels of this house by this time and we still had the ants. This is when my vacation turned sour. The two younger kids in our group would not sleep in the basement for fear of a mouse or other bug crawling on them while sleeping. The only other place to sleep was the sofa upstairs in living room as the other beds were taken by the adults. This led to kids not sleeping well as the sun shines bright in the morning through the windows. We were gone everyday from about 1030-7 on the lake so I assumed someone would have come to spray for bugs while we were gone. Then on Thursday I contacted James to let him know what happened Wed. He offered for the housekeeper to come. I told him it was not necessary since we were leaving Saturday morning. In my opinion someone coming to do a quick clean of the house would not get rid of the bug/ rodent problem. What the house needs is deep cleaning ie.cabinents emptied and wiped down, ceiling fan globes cleaned out of dead bugs, walls wiped off, garage swept up etc. (not something you do with tenants in the house) I did tell him he could send the exterminator though. None ever came that I know of as there were still live roaches and ants found until we checked out. We were not offered any sort of compensation by the owner.Hopefully they will get an exterminator in the house, remove the mouse traps and do a deep clean. Other things of note, this is a 20-30 minute drive to the town so plan accordingly. No lake view as stated in description;(
Heidi, we are deeply sorry that your family's stay did not live up to your expectations. While this property has never received this sort of feedback, we do take your concerns seriously in an effort to create the best possible stay for each guest. We understand the homeowner offered to send the cleaning crew twice to address your concerns but was denied both times. They were willing to provide a resolution in a timely manner, and we regret if we were unable to come to an agreeable solution. They aim for all guests to be completely satisfied during their stay and we are confident this cabin will continue to host many happy guests! Best, the Evolve Team
Our group is hoping to go back in a couple months!
We LOVE the house. The home is spacious with plenty of areas that provide privacy under one roof. The home is beautifully decorated with all the top notch appliances. The owner was quick to respond when we had a couple of issues we ran into while there for the weekend. His maintenance man arrived within a couple hours and to fixed the problem.
I have a couple suggestions; the house needs a good deep cleaning and the kitchen needs a 13 x 9 cake/baking dish in it's inventory.
We had a blast and hoping to return in a couple months with another group. Thank you for sharing your home!
Not a Great View but a Great Place!!
View to the lake is almost none however this is a Great Cabin. My family and I loved the coziness of it. One down is that they don't have their own wood for the fireplace, however there is a Walmart 10 minutes away and you can buy it there. Very Please and the owner very responsive.
Quiet, peaceful, and lovely
This property was very nice for what I was needing: A quiet place to hit my mental reset button in lovely surroundings. The cabin was beautiful with a nicely remodeled kitchen. The basement kids' suite was a big hit with the kids - especially the "cabin bunk beds". The outdoor surroundings are beautiful and the leaves were changing colors. If you're looking for a place to stay that is close enough to a town to run out and do things, this is not the place for you, as it is about a 20 minute drive on curvy, hilly roads to get back to town. I didn't mind this, though, as i enjoyed the peace and quiet. It would have been nice if there was a walking trail from the property to the lake. Take firewood with you, as there is no firewood on site for the awesome wood-burning fireplace. Also, the upstairs bathtub drain wouldn't seal all the way, so it wouldn't hold water for very long. All in all, though, this cabin was perfect for a refreshing retreat, and I hope I can return someday.
