Upon request, we can refer you to a local chef who will shop and prepare meals from her Tuscan menu. A great time and money saver. Why go to a more expensive restaurant when you can be sure of a great meal and sensational view sitting outside at Buralla.
Lucca: The walled city of Lucca, only 15 minutes from Buralla, is one of the most beautiful places in Tuscany. Big enough to have everything, yet small enough to cover easily and safely on foot or by rented bicycle. For a rooftop view of Lucca, stroll around the 4km city walls. Or cut through the middle on the car-free Via Filiunga. On this street alone you will sample the very best of Tuscan life: visit beautiful San Michele and San Frediano Churches; climb the Guinigi Tower and Torre delle Ore; pause for a restorative coffee or meal in the elliptical Amfiteatro; shop at any number of beautiful outlets; drop into the residence of Giacomo Puccini, and listen to a short evening recital at San Giovanni Basilica or the Opera house. Tosca, Madame Butterfly and many other of Puccini's works are performed in the summer festival at Torre del Lago which is nearby on the Mediterranean coast.
Active life around Lucca: Look out of Buralla's windows and ask youself 'what do I want to do today?' You have 360 degree views and the choice is yours. Within easy walking distance you can visit the renaissance palace 500 metres away at the bottom of the property. You could stroll through the vineyards and olive groves into the Pizzorne hills on one of the marked trails. You could drive to the beaches of Versilia and Forte dei Marmi overlooked by the spectacular Alpi Apuane which provide the world famous marble from nearby Carrara. Visit the little hill top villages of Montecarlo, to taste wines or Collodi, the home of Pinnochio.
Drive an hour east and you are in Florence. An hour west and you could be climbing the tower of Pisa. North West, Cinque Terre.
To the north of Lucca the Garfagnana valley presents yet another typology - dense forests, hill top towns like Barga and Castelnuovo.

About Simon Sudbury
That little photo is me playing olive harvest supervisor during the All Saints school holiday at the beginning of November. My Italian wife and I love escaping bleak northern Europe with two or three families that week. We issue buckets, nets and ladders to the kids - who spend many happy hours up the olive trees - while we concentrate on the important things: taking in the views, lazy lunching, nattering away, poking the coals on the BBQ, strolling to a local vineyard. Very restorative.
Simon Sudbury purchased this Villa in 2003
Why Simon Sudbury chose Capannori
We saw a ruin on a hill while looking for a holiday home away from London's bustle. What a piece of luck.
What makes this Villa unique
Friends and family reunions. The setting is exceptional but what sets Buralla apart is being able to comfortably cater for every generation's needs and for no-one to feel hard done by. For example the downstairs suite, and level floors and accesses are great for the less mobile; on the other hand, there's a playroom next to the huge kitchen so parents can keep an eye on little ones if necessary while entertaining around the bar. I'm beginning to believe Buralla also has a special catalytic effect on people by bringing previously hidden talents to the fore. Two examples from September last year - an unbelievably good Indian meal for 20 cooked with stupendous skill and care by a friend who I thought only did fried eggs. And, days earlier, a not particularly hydro-dynamic chap called Jim (48) did 4 lengths of the pool underwater non- stop. Please someone, break this record and let me know. He lived to tell the tale and has become unbearable. (2015 update: the record now stands at 5, thanks to Amelie, a 15 year old from France)

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!! STUNNING SUNSETS AND VIEWS!!!
I can not say enough about this property! From the very first contact with the owners Simon and Claudia to the amazing villa manager Manuela to the Fabulous Chef Simonetta, Antonio and Mikhala!!
We were a group of 16 friends from the USA who traveled to Caponnori to celebrate a couple of birthdays and anniversaries and it was a vacation of a lifetime!! There was so much room in this villa, with so many areas to either have private time or to be all in a group. Never in the 2 weeks we were there did it feel like it was crowded or that you could not find a space just to yourself!
I have to say the highlight of our stay would be Simonetta, Antonio and Mikhala!! On the evenings we had them come in and cook for us there was so much love, laughter and even though there was a language barrier, we still ,managed to communicate and have a fantastic time... there were even many tears shed on the final evening as we had to say goodbye!!! This is the perfect property for being centrally located to take day trips to surrounding areas. Don't miss out on Lucca, San Gimignano, Cinque Terre, Collodi, Pisa, Florence and it is a bit of a drive but so worth the trip, San Pitigliano!!!
As far as the driving directions for getting to the villa are concerned, it is a bit of a challenge the first time out and the best information I can give is to put either "Villa Torrigiani" or Villa Bruguier" into your GPs and follow those directions. Villa Torrigiani (the beautiful Villa that sits below Villa Buralla) is the first you will come upon. Then you will come upon Villa Bruguier (eagles on top of gate) which is exactly 1 mile of a curvy, twisty narrow road before you come to the driveway for villa Buralla. Listen to your GPS!!!
This is most definitely a place we will be coming back to again!!!! Simon and Claudia, your home is magnificent!! Manuela you were so gratuitous with your help and hospitality. Simonetta, Antonio and Mikhala, We Love you and Please- you have a standing invitation to come to the states and visit anytime! We WILL be back and I am sending people your way soon!!! Thank you for such an amazing experience!
What a review! It means a lot and we are so glad you had such a good time. We also appreciate your feedback from your GPS. They all seem to suggest different routes - but up the hill past Villa Bruguier is the best option. (I send a google map with lots of points of interest which includes directions - and also there's a map on the webpage.)
Claudia and I look forward to welcoming you again with the returners discount!
Our stay was great!!! The villa was spacious and beautiful. The grounds were amazing with a beautiful pool and gorgeous view. Any problems or questions were addressed quickly. We had 2 fabulous meals prepared by Simonetta.
Wonderful family gathering and holiday
We had the opportunity to stay at Villa Buralla in the heat of August 2017. A group of five families, long standing friends from Europe and Canada converged in Tuscany for two weeks. We had a total of 11 adults and 9 children for various times of our holiday.
We booked and paid for this trip in April and were very excited. The accommodation and trip lived up to every expectation we had. The pool was enjoyed daily. The A/C in every bedroom worked. The smaller villa was occupied by a family with small infants and was perfect for them.
Manuela was amazing co-ordinating all of the support staff. The gardener, pool staff, cleaning staff were punctual and discrete. Simonetta and her cooking, along with Antonio and Michaela's hospitality not to mention their grappa was the icing on the cake.
Having authentic dinners in the Tuscan sun on while linen while we enjoyed wine, prosecco, grappa - we all have wonderful memories of this trip. Thank you so much Simon.
So glad you enjoyed it. And thanks for the grappa tip!
Perfect spot for a family
We were a family of 10 ranging from age 72 to age 5. We had a ball. The kids loved the pool. Simonetta is a cook, available as needed, she made our stay even better. Her food was superb, her price was reasonable, and Simonetta and her husband were pleasant to have around.
The villa is in a great location, far enough from Lucca to be really in the country, but close enough to get into town easily. It is also a great location for day trips; in our case Pisa, Florence, Modena, the marble quarries and the Cinque Terre. The weather was hot, but the AC worked. The whole experience couldn't have been much better.
Gorgeous, relaxing setting.
This was our second visit to Burralla, and it was a magical as we remembered! We had a large family group, which the property comfortably accommodated. The younger kids loved the pool, and Simonetta, the private chef available through the property, came in and prepared two fantastic dinners, which we enjoyed outside with the spectacular evening views. One tip we learned on this trip was rather than drive into Florence and fight the traffic and parking, take the train from Pescia, which is short drive from the house and has regular service directly to the main station in Florence. Simon (and Manuela) thanks for your gracious assistance!
It was amazing, Truly magical experience
This was our second time at Buralla and it did not disappoint. This is such an amazing property, the house, the grounds, the pool, everything was perfect. We had friends fly in from all over, some who had never been out of the U.S. and they had such a relaxing stay. Big bonus, we had Simonetta cook for us every night we were there. We ate like Kings and Queens. She is an amazing woman with such a big heart, oh and did I mention the meals she prepared were spectacular!!! In summary best two weeks we have had in a while and would recommend this wonderful home to anyone.
It was great to have you back!
Lucca is a jewel of a city, strategically placed between Florence and Pisa, but smaller, safer and perfect for walking. Aristocratic renaissance families built majestic palaces in the hills north of Lucca to benefit from the close proximity to the cities and the gentle breezes coming from the coast. Buralla overlooks perhaps the most stunning example of these palaces, Villa Torrigiani, which is well worth a visit. (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Villa_Torrigiani). On your way back pick up some wild boar sausages for the BBQ. This region is packed with things to enjoy: Florence and its treasures are 55 mins away; Pisa, 45 mins; music, opera, architecture, gastronomy in Lucca (whose most famous son is Puccini); thermal spas and golf in Montecatini; beaches and fashion in Forte dei Marmi; marble and sculpture in Carrara and Pietrasanta; mountains and forests in the Garfagnana; and beautiful walks, biking, food, wine and world famous olive oil right outside the door. Other Activities: Opera, music, art, wine and olive-oil tasting Golf: Montecatini - winds through olive groves; very charming, and a good walk. Buggies a good option. Le Pavoniere - top class Arnold Palmer design near Prato. No bad holes, several over water. Lovely views all around. Really good condition. Versilia - Luxurious club house and very good course. Cosmopolitan, near Pisa. Similar to Versilia plus water holes. Tirrenia, beautiful 9 holes which winds through the pine forest next door to Cosmopolitan. Ugolino, south of Florence - old style hill side course with great charm, and very welcoming. Take a buggy in high summer, because it gets hot! Ski: Abetone is a small resort about 90 minutes away. While not a major destination for international ski tourism, it has spawned several italian champions over the years and makes a great day out.
