About Rita Chapman

We bought this vacation home in 2012 so our daughter would be closer to school. We have loved being in the community of Hill city. Everything is within walking distance. We are avid cyclists and the mountain biking and road riding are wonderful. We own Happy Trails Cabins in Silver City and have run a cabin rental business since 1995. We live in Silver City in the summer taking care of our 5 cabins. Both of us are from Rapid City and love the activities the Black Hills have to offer.

Why Rita Chapman chose Black Hills

We bought this property because, though we love Silver City (where we have lived for 17 years), we wanted to be closer to the amenities of a city. The groceries, post office, library, school are within 3/4 of a mile from the Hill City Home. We love the private yard with views across the valley of the surrounding ridges. We even have a great view of Harney Peak in the distance.

What makes this house unique

We have always loved homes with personality. This wonderfully kept up home has the unique personality of the late 1800's. The stairs are narrower than modern ones and a bit steeper. We do not recommend this home to those with difficulty negotiating stairs.

Wonderful stay

  • 5 of 5

My family and I enjoyed our stay. The cabin was close to downtown Hill City, and we walked there every night, and for lunch at the Alpine Inn. The house was very clean, had everything we needed plus more, linens, towels, dishes and cooking utensils, even some spices. My granddaughter was with us, she just turned 3, but could easily navigate the small stairway to the upper floor. It was wonderful that my mini-schnauzer mix was welcome and we spent a lot of time in the fenced side yard in the mornings and evenings, and we saw deer multiple times in the yard or down the street. There was parking for 2 cars right along the house. The house has an A/C, which we turned on the first night since it had been a warm day, but the other days/evenings we just opened the windows. I highly recommend this vacation home.

Great family or couple getaway

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I and our three children stayed here for 4 days while visiting the Black Hills. It is a nice and well maintained home. The location was ideal for getting to all of key attractions. It is a short walk (5 mins or less) to a number of great restaurants, bars and shops in downtown Hill City. It is also less than 5 mins from the Mickelsen bike trail, which we rode every day. I highly recommend this property to anyone with a family or just as a couple. Owners were great to work with.

1885 house

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here July 2015. Our family of 4 was plenty comfortable here. Having fast wifi is nice bc the cell reception in the area is not good. Plenty of things provided to make your stay comfortable. We saw deer in the backyard many mornings of our stay. Can walk to downtown Hill City for food, ice cream, shopping and even a park for the kiddos to play. Running/biking trail virtually across the street. The location is perfect for getting to all of the local sites (Mt Rushmore, Reptile Gardens, Crazy Horse, Custer St Park etc). Our kids (3 and 5) slept very comfortably and much better than in a hotel. We would definitely stay here again!

Enjoyed our stay

  • 5 of 5

This home was a very cozy place for my wife and I, our four kids and my parents. We had enough space to relax and eat meals, and the location is great. We very much enjoyed our visit and Rita was very friendly.

Cutest house in Hill city

  • 5 of 5

If you’re planning a vacation to the Black Hills, this house would be the perfect “home base”. It’s centrally located and has charm and personality. If you have trouble with stairs you might want to consider a different location as the stairs to the upper level become narrow as you reach the top. But if stairs aren’t an issue this is the place to stay. One morning a deer came up to the window, looked right at us and gave us the perfect photo op. Don’t get that in the big city! Thank you Rita and Tally!

Weekend Trip

  • 5 of 5

House was very clean and extremely convenient to many tourist attractions (Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer). Rita was very friendly and met us and let us in later in the evening. Comfortable beds and furnishings. Nice outdoor seating area for am coffee. Walking distance to shops and restaurants in Hill City. We would stay again. We stayed with our three children ages 7,8, and 10.
