Charming, Historic Log Cabin, Perfect for Family

Bedrooms 3
Half Baths1
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

3 Bedrooms, 1.5 Baths, Sleeps 7, 1.5 Blocks from Ocean

The front door opens to the first floor where you are greeted by a comfortable, wicker-furnished living room with a working brick fireplace. To your right is the dining room, containing an expandable round oak table, six chairs and lit by a unique, handcrafted shell chandelier. Off the dining room is the compact kitchen which provides an electric stove, refrigerator and dishwasher. From there you can step out onto the screened back porch.

The master bedroom is tucked behind the living room at the rear corner of the house. It features a handcrafted queen-sized bed with drawers, a matching dresser and basin. The quarter bath is located a few steps from the master bedroom on the back porch, just beyond the laundry area, which exits to the backyard.

The second floor houses two additional bedrooms and a full bath. One bedroom has a double bed, dresser and closet, and the other larger bedroom has 3 twin beds, two handcrafted dressers and a closet.

The spacious, secluded backyard has a large outdoor shower, a picnic table with benches and a propane gas grill. There are also two laundry lines for hanging wet towels. Because of the surrounding dense foliage and trees, there is a nice sense of privacy from nearby houses. The stone covered yard is at times in full sun, and later in the day protected from the sun when the trees cast cooling shadows.

Having three porches accommodates a variety of activities. One porch is provided with a large table and benches for indoor eating or playing games. The front porch is probably the one most often used, for snacking and eating, reading, relaxing out of the sun, or partying with your friends. The open side porch is also a nice place to hang out, and chat with neighbors and friends.

The overall feeling of the property is a comfortable, snug cottage nestled in cooling trees, and located only a few minutes from a lovely northend beach. Five minutes on a bicycle, or a walk of about 15 minutes, will take you into the charming beach town of Avalon which features all kinds of stores, miniature golf, pizza and many other kinds of restaurants. The streets are wide and the roads are flat, making it an ideal family vacation spot.

Why Betsy Griffith-Smith chose Avalon

The Timbers is an historic house built over 100 years ago, yet it offers many modern conveniences. It is located one and a half blocks from the beach, about a five minute walk. There are two large screened in porches, ideal for relaxing and reading out of the sun, in addition to a roomy, secluded backyard.

What makes this cottage unique

One of my favorite aspects of the house is the entryway. After climbing a couple of wooden steps and opening the screen door, you are greeted by a very spacious screened porch which stretches across the front of the house, and wraps around one side. The furnishings are comfortable wicker chairs and tables, making it ideal for lounging, and enjoying cocktails, eating, reading and/or relaxing.

The front door to the house is nestled inside the porch, so you have a unusual sense of privacy as you enter the interior. The living room features a large working brick fireplace with plenty of available firewood, a nice option on a chilly night. On the wall hangs a picture of Woodrow Wilson, who, legend has it, visited The Timbers before he became president!

September at The Timbers

  • 5 of 5

I was looking for old Avalon, what I remembered from my youth, and I found it at The Timbers. The house is perfect but don't expect large screen TVs and an enormous kitchen. The cottage is just right, with lovely old furniture and artwork and the perfect size kitchen and bedrooms for a small family or group. The kitchen is efficient and perfect. The screened porches are where you spend most of your time. It is a short walk to a beautiful beach. A peaceful and restful place for me and my family. We hope to return next year.

When I walked into Timbers I felt as though I had stepped back in time. Here I entered the best of both worlds where the mountains met the shore. It reminded me of a B&B in Cape May but here I had the whole house filled with days of things long past. The best part was the screened in wrap-around porch where I spent my days reading and relaxing. Another plus was the block and a half to the natural beaches of Avalon. Avalon is the only shore point that clings to its natural beauty unlike most shore points which scream of commercialism. It is quiet, clean , uncluttered ,all which appeals to me.If you are looking for time out then this is the place for you.

We had a great time relaxing at the Timbers. Also enjoyed staying in such a unique place. Spent most of our time on the porch reading and chatting. We'll be back.

The Timbers

  • 5 of 5

My family came to stay at the Timbers for the week of July 4th and we loved the quaintness of the home. Especially having a screened in front porch that wrapped around the side of the house that also offered privacy. The back yard was wonderful as well and offered privacy and a chimnea that we enjoyed making S"mores. I would highly recommend this home for those that love historic homes. It is only a block and a half from the beach and close to town. A big plus was that we were able to bring our dog with us and she was able to hang on the porch enjoying the fresh air as the porch is shaded. We look forward to staying at this home again.
