The Sugar Shack: Donner Summit, Serene Lakes, Sugar Bowl

Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 1 - 2 nights

Overview

About the property

2 Bedroom + Large Sleeping Loft, 2 Full Baths (Sleeps 6-8)

All that Donner Summit has to offer in a cozy, cute, organized and updated cabin.

* The Sugar Shack is an 1100 sq. ft. 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom cabin with a sleeping/TV/game loft. There are two identical queen bedrooms on the lower floor that share one full bath; there are 2 twin beds and 2 twin sleeper chairs plus a 3/4 bath in the loft (which serves as the 3rd bedroom). There is a layout of the cabin in the photos.

* The Sugar Shack is located 1 block up from the Bales boat storage/put-in, 2 blocks from the extensive Royal Gorge trail system (for use in winter and summer), approximately 4 miles to Sugar Bowl Ski Resort, and 1 mile to Soda Springs Ski hill/snow play area. The neighborhood sledding hill is 1 block up from the cabin.

* In the winter, we have a snowplow service to clear the driveway. The county snow plow maintains the streets.

* Our main source of heat is an efficient wood burning stove, supplemented by electric wall heaters. We provide all the kindling and wood, but the wood stove needs to continually be stoked and burning to ensure adequate heat.

*The Sugar Shack does not offer ski leases.

* We provide all towels, linens, paper goods (tp, kleenex, paper towels, napkins) as well as a fully stocked kitchen. The coffee maker does not require paper filters. We have plenty of beach towels for lake use during the summer. There are a few spices provided otherwise guests provide all food.

* We have very little storage so we do not provide high chairs, baby gates, pack and plays, etc.

*We (the owners) have 'VRBO'd' all across the country as a family, and have set up the Sugar Shack based on our experiences. We personally manage the cabin so when you have questions or issues, you will be getting our personalized service. We strive to manage the Sugar Shack in a professional manner, and the property is professionally cleaned between guests. We retain a local property manager for emergencies and cabin maintenance. We invite you to come enjoy Donner Summit, Serene Lakes, and the Sugar Shack...

About Janet & Kent Fortner

We have always wanted a 'cabin in the woods,' and part of making it happen has been to design/remodel a place that not only we could enjoy, but one that could be a wonderful retreat for other families too. As a family with two kids, we've rented many a vacation cabin in California, and we've designed the Sugar Shack with the best of those experiences in mind.

Janet & Kent Fortner purchased this cabin in 2012

Why Janet & Kent Fortner chose Serene Lakes

A cozy and cute cabin on a relatively private lot, in a very friendly and nature/adventure focused community, one block from the lake, with skiing a couple minutes away? Why not?

What makes this cabin unique

Many of the homes at Serene Lakes are either huge (5 bedroom, sleep 12), or if they are smaller, they are quite old. We fully remodeled this cabin in 2013 with an all new kitchen, refinished wood floors, new washer/dryer, updated bathrooms, new furniture, new linens, new light and plumbing fixtures, etc.

Beautiful spot!

  • 5 of 5

It's everything we hoped for, extremely cosy and well set up for a gang of friends to cook, build fires and enjoy the cold winter weather. What a wonderful home! Thank you for sharing.

Perfectly cute, clean, well-equipped cabin

  • 5 of 5

This place was perfect for our two families. There are two downstairs bedrooms each with a queen? bed and the upstairs loft sleeps four on two twin beds and two fold out chairs. There is a full bathroom both upstairs and downstairs. The kitchen had everything we needed and the house was very clean and updated. The best part was the fact we could walk about two blocks down to the lake. It is a 10 minute drive from Boreal Ski Resort. I highly recommend this rental.

Cozy and comfortable.

  • 5 of 5

We love Donner Summit and wanted to share it with our family visiting from Australia. The Sugar Shack looks tiny on the outside as it is an original A-frame nestled amongst the many larger "cabins" in the area. However, the Sugar Shack has been thoughtfully and beautifully updated and felt spacious for our group. We placed the couple with two young kiddos in the loft area and still had two private bedrooms downstairs. All-in-all, this is a reasonably priced accommodation if you are visiting Soda Springs for the first time.

The Sugar Shack was perfect

  • 5 of 5

We stayed there for a couple of night while our kids ran in an over night relay race out of Royal Gorge Ski Area. It was the perfect place to come back to at night to have a nice comfortable bed to sleep in. Thank you.

Great retreat in snow country near superb skiing. Year round retreat as well.

  • 5 of 5

The owners have created a welcoming cabin for snow lovers of all kinds: with access to the best of cross country skiing in North Tahoe, and other skiing/snowshoe experiences in the winter. Even a sled hill just over a block away.

The setting is in the midst of a vital retreat community by the beautiful Serene Lakes, at the Soda Springs exit off Hwy 80. It is just 2 exits west of the stunning Donner Summit, and a 15 minute drive east to downtown Truckee with its appeal for top-rated restaurants and artisan and retail shopping. Close to the Pacific Crest trail for spring/summer and fall hiking too.
