Shore Leave is a river front 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom, 2000 square foot, single level ranch builit in 1992. Located on a private court with 4 other houses, and just 1 mile from old town Florence. Walk, bike or drive and you'll be there in minutes. On the river side of the house, you'll find stunning views of the Siuslaw and dunes, a sandy beach to walk and relax on, plus a hiking trail for you and your furry friends.

The Living, Dining & Kitchen are all one room, looking out on the marvelous dunes & Siuslaw river. The table seats 6, and the Bar seats 2.There is a wood stove that will be cozy and romantic for those stormy days. There is a Jenn-Aire range, a dishwasher, large refrigerator and all the usual ammenities that come with a well stocked kitchen.

As you know we only have a few houses with garages. The 2 car garage will hold your vintage car for Rhody Days or Rods & Rhodies, the 6 Harleys you're cruising up the coast with friends, or your detached boat or ATV trailer.

The master bedroom has a king bed, a private door to the deck, a large walk in closet, ensuite bathroom with shower. It also includes a sitting area, and a twin sofa sleeper. The 2nd bedroom has a queen bed with a cable TV, and the 3rd bedroom has a full sized bed. Those bedrooms have the bathroom across the hall with a shower/tub combo. There is a large laundry room with full size washer & dryer. You'll find an expansive deck, a fenced yard, and a side deck that is glass walled to protect you from those windy summer days, we sometimes experience.

The Florence municipal airport is just 1.1 mile from the house fly your private plane in and a courtesy car and bicycles are available.

About Leslie

Shore Leave was the retirement home of Brigadier General Benjamin King. He served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. General King was qualified in many aircraft including the T-33, the supersonic F-106 Delta Dart, A-1E, B-26, C-47, AT-28, P-38, P-51, P-80 and others. He flew combat in three wars and accumulated more than 6,000 hours of flying time, including 1,146 combat hours logged in 400 combat missions. His decorations included the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross with three oak leaf clusters, Air Medal with 24 oak leaf clusters, Purple Heart and the French Croix de Guerre. Four F-15s from the Oregon Air National Guard, Klamath Falls, Oregon gave BG King a missing man fly-by in his hometown of Florence, Oregon on 20 October 2004. It was a tribute to one of our great warriors. (I happened to be on Hwy 101 that day, and it's something those of us who witnessed it will never forget.)

You'll find some amazing historical items, and wonderful art from his travels around the world as his heirs wanted to share this with everyone. The amazing part is he could have retired anywhere in the world, and he chose Florence, spend some time here, and we think you'll understand why as well.

Guestbook comments from the manager

There was plenty of room for us all, and the accommodations were quite nice! Great views of the water, access to the beach, close to town...this place has it all!

A peaceful retreat

  • 4 of 5

I am not super fond of staying in vacation rentals that are overly decorated with personal belongings. However, this place was for the most part, an exception. The story of the owner and his family is sweet and the memorabilia is interesting. I do wish there were not so many personal portraits watching over you in the master bedroom. But the expansive river views made up for it. We stayed 4 nights. The kitchen is well equipped. The living room is a nice gathering space. And the views were peaceful and pleasant. And just a short drive to Old Town and the beach.

Great time on the Siuslaw

  • 5 of 5

Shore leave was perfect for our family get-together--the open living area provided a place to comfortably come together and even with the windy weather the windows gave us a feel for being outdoors. The side deck also provided shelter from the wind. We would definitely return for another "shore leave"!

Perfect Location & a Wonderful House

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at 'Shore Leave' - the river front deck was great for relaxation - the views & sunsets were just gorgeous. Spacious floor plan and huge master suite with deck access - nicely appointed kitchen - plenty of room for a large family / group but just the two of us thoroughly enjoyed the home. Quiet cul de sac location & nice stairs leading down to the river - couldn't have been better! Owners binder of local area & dining tips came in handy as well. Thus is a beautiful home in a fantastic location - we hope to be back!

Love Love Love

Sit on the deck overlooking the river and dunes, walk along the sandy banks of the river. Short walk to old town for great food. Short drive to the beaches. Walk along the north and south Jettys. Ride on the Dunes. Visit the sea lion caves, light houses, hike in Cape Perpetua. Drive south to get the umpqua oysters. Best in the world.

The house is so comfortable with cozy memorabilia from the former owner, a WWII fighter pilot. History.

Wonderful!! :)

We had a great time at Shore Leave. The weather was fantastic. The views from the deck were amazing. It was close to everything but right on the water. We really enjoyed the dunes, beachcombing and Old Town. The house was lovely, the kitchen worked well for us and the beds were so comfortable. We really enjoyed the history of the place. If we come back to this part of the country again we would love to stay here again. Thanks.
