E Komo Mai (Welcome) to the Hilo oceanfront condo, Hale Honohonu. Everyone knows that every Hawaiian home (hale) has to have a name! 'Hono'( for calm) and honu'( for sea turtle) are Hawaiian words that perfectly describe what you will discover just steps from your vacation hale--wonderfully calm water and tame sea turtles. Hilo is 'old-style' Hawaii. Although you won't find resort glitz and action here, we think you will like the fresh breeze off the ocean and an opportunity to explore Hilo at a leisurely pace.
Our condo is a corner, end unit which has a great view of the ocean and Keaukaha Beach Park/Carl Smith Beach park. On clear days, you can see Mauna Kea and smoke rising from the volcano in the distance. Carl Smith is the home of green sea turtles, very friendly creatures who often swim right up to visitors to say 'Aloha' (just remember that as visitors we respect their space and don't approach them, rather we wait for them to approach us). Our comfortably furnished lanai provides hours of viewing pleasure.
The sandy ocean lagoon is protected from the ocean waves by a natural reef. Spring water bubbles up from the lava formations. As a result, this is one of the Big Island's best snorkeling locations--sea turtles, wrasses and the humuhumunukunukuapua'a fish! Bring your own gear or use our fins and mask to explore this natural wonder. We have it on 'local' authority that the spring water has natural healing properties--believers or not, we always feel great after a swim! The park grounds are quite picturesque with brackish lagoons and open expanses of green grass--perfect for after swim lounging. Picnic ocean-side with our beach towels, chairs, and cooler.
Many visitors underestimate the size of the Big Island, and as a consequence, don't realize that Volcanoes National Park is well over 2 hours drive from Kailua Kona. However, the park is only 30 minutes from Hilo. There is so much to see and do on the East and South side of the island that is often missed in 'just a day trip' to Hilo. Waipio'o Valley, Akaka Falls, Hawaii Tropical Garden at Onomea Bay, Imiloa Planetarium, historic Hilo town, Liliuokalani Park, Coconut Island, Panaewa Zoo, Smithsonian connected Lyman Museum, Kapoho tidal pools(another outstanding snorkeling spot), and Mauna Kea observatories and visitors' center--are all close by.
After a full day of snorkeling or exploring the East and South side of the Big Island, settle into your comfortable king size bed and let the sound of the waves lull you to sleep. Our condo is a two bedroom, one bathroom unit. Each bed has a 2013 Serta Perfect Sleeper mattress set.
For those meals you wish to enjoy in your hale, there is a fully equipped kitchen. The Hilo Farmers' Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays is a great place to get local fruits, vegetables, cheeses, breads, salsas--the list is endless. For your dining pleasure, Hilo has a great selection of restaurants for a town its size--one of the best seafood restaurants is right across the street!
It would be our pleasure to be your hosts for your Big Island vacation. I live in Hilo, and personally manage Hale Honohonu, and love to assist our guests in planning a great vacation!

Hale Honohonu is nestled in the lush surroundings of Carl Smith Park. This well-maintained beach park is home to calm waters (hono) and friendly sea turtles (honu). We swim and snorkel here often and love sharing it with our guests.
Hilo is 'old-style' Hawaii--sleepy and local and our location epitomizes that spirit, that feeling. Hale Honohonu is perfect for guests who have a love of nature, a sense of adventure, and an aloha spirit. If you enjoy swimming, snorkeling, wildlife viewing, wave watching, reading, or taking it easy this is the place for you.
We had a great stay in Mozilla's condo. It was very clean and nicely furnished. It was in a good location next to Carl Smith park so we could walk down to the shore and observe the green turtles up close. It is over a mile to the downtown area and not good walking, so we drove to eat and also loved the farmer's market. Our favorite activity was horseback riding in the Wai'po valley!
Recently returned from Hawaii after spending several days at this condo. Wonderful location overlooking Carlsmith Park. Very much enjoyed seeing the turtles there & swimming in lagoons. Lovely apartment--very clean, comfortable, nicely decorated. Had everything you needed to make a nice meal. Our son ziplined at Umauma Falls (through Umauma Experience) and we all loved visiting Volcano Park which was an easy 40 min drive from condo. Enjoyed dinner at Ponds & Ken's Pancake House. Mozela was extremely easy to contact when making arrangements. Would highly recommend her condo to friends/family. Gerri and Howie (from Colorado Springs)
We stayed in Mauna Loa Shores for just over a week in August with 3 adults and 2 teens.
Location as advertised. Great location as a base to get to the farmers market, volcanoes, Maunakea observatory and Puna snorking in the Kapoho tide pools (need to walk a bit from the parking lot). It rained all day for our first day, but we spent it at the 'Imiloa Astronomy Center and even became members. The 3D planetarium was enlightening. The live show was better than the animations.
Also great location for the lagoons and lush vegetation past the building. Saw very friendly turtles almost every time we went around 3:30 pm. Had fun exploring the lagoons to find the warm and cold spots. There is lots of grass but minimal sand. Water shoes are recommended.
The condo was as advertised as well. Simple, efficient and sufficient. Liked the decor. We felt we were living in our first apartment but with much bigger bedrooms. Open windows and multiple fans were necessary. Well stocked kitchen (including a coffee grinder) with a few sundries. Managed to bake a birthday cake! Shower had great water pressure. We also appreciated the access to US Netflix with so many more shows than the Canadian site! Ate at Ken's house of pancakes...open 24/7 and has a vast menu.
Would have been helpful to have an extra building key and a serrated bread knife.
Would definitely stay again and recommend to friends who appreciate old school and don't need all the bells and whistles. Thanks!
Great location for our family with a small child. Condo supplied with lots of "extras" (boogie boards, umbrellas, snorkels, etc.). In a week's stay, we swam every day at beach park next door and still visited major sites (volcano, market, falls, botanical gardens). We saw turtles at least half of the days we went in the water. At first, it was hard to get used to the sound of the frogs at night--since you need the windows open to stay cool--but it became relaxing and we missed it when we returned home. For location and price, would stay there again!
Beautiful beach view with access to great snorkeling. The place was very comfortable with a nice kitchen. Very organized with all sorts of beach gear! Highly recommend it!
This is a nice place. Good amenities, like full kitchen (fridge, oven, stove, microwave, toaster), TV in the living room, beach supplies (chairs, boogie boards, towels). The property is secured by locked gates at night, and the elevator always requires a key, so you won't have any uninvited wanderers walking the halls.
If you are expecting (or require) air conditioning, this may not be the place for you. No A/C whatsoever. Depending on the weather, you'll need to leave the windows open to sleep. If you like the sounds of nature, that's fine, but I couldn't sleep very well with the sounds of the rain, fan, local wildlife, and occasional car on the street.
