About Mark or Margaret VanDerWerff
We built our dream vacation home to share with family and friends in 2001. As South Dakota natives, we have roots in the Black Hills (Sturgis and Rapid City), but live in eastern SD, near Mitchell. Our family (children & grandchildren) have created many memories in this cabin...and we hope you'll create your own family treasures. May your time here strengthen the bonds of friend and family, and bless you with rest and relaxation.

Why Mark or Margaret VanDerWerff chose Lead
We love the Black Hills...as an active outdoor family, the decision to have a home on Terry Peak was an easy one. We do it all: including skiing, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, hiking, sledding, fishing, golfing...the list is pretty long, actually. For all these reasons and more, we love our cabin in the Hills.
What makes this Cabin unique
This cabin is set apart because of its unique floor plan. We saw a lot of cabins before we decided on this special property. With 3 bedrooms on separate floors (and each with its own full bathroom) we can give our guests and family the private space (and quiet) that they deserve when vacationing. We also have a private lot, with no neighbors on 3 sides. Love that!

Loved our stay at the Dutch Cabin. Had everything we needed, except some great windows to enjoy the beautiful Black Hills. They had just received a great sum of snow. It was cleared, but the driveway is steep and despite 4wheel drive, it was a struggle at times.
Great cabin. Plenty of room. Large table and a downstairs entertainment area for the kids. Loved it.
I am forwarding this review, that came to our private email account. Guests stayed from Oct 27 to 30th, a party of two families with 4 adults and 5 children.
Thank you so much, Deans and VanDerWerffs for booking with us. And for your kind review.
Had a great time!
Our family loved the cabin. We enjoyed the 4 bedrooms where everyone could find a bed and the kids loved the downstairs with tv, foosball, and hot tub. Enjoyed the large table where we could all congregate to eat and play cards. Loved the trees and privacy even though some construction going on in the area. We had a relaxing stay.
Thank you for your kind review.
Very Clean, for women it could use a couple of full length mirrors
Thanks Anthony. Appreciate your good suggestion. We can do that!
Family get together
Very neat and clean. Furnishings good. Accommodated eight people easily with much to do: hot tub, foozeball, tv, games. Atmosphere great for quality family time. Everyone said they will be back! Thanks for a great place!
Thank you for your kind review. Please come again!
Great house for a multi family vacation!
We loved our time at the Dutch Retreat! It was a great little reunion weekend for my in-laws 40th anniversary and the house had everything we needed. The kids loved the hot tub and the adults loved quiet morning walks in the hills looking for deer and other wildlife! The internet wasn't the best on our devices but that's not the point of vacation. The kitchen was well stocked and we never needed anything all weekend. One note - if you're picky about pillows, bring your own, the ones in our room with the day bed were in sad shape but otherwise everything was great!
Thank you Annette. We appreciate your nice review.
Staying in the Northern Black Hills offers a wide variety of choices for your vacation. The area boasts fabulous winter sports venues; skiing, snowmobiling, tubing. Hiking, fishing, golfing, sight seeing are just a few of summers treats. Black Hills Trail systems for power vehicles or bicycling the Michelson Trail are less than 5 miles from the front door. Relive the mining era, the days of the gunslingers, and old west cowboys and saloon girls in historic Deadwood and Lead (less than 10 miles). Gaming, fine dining and entertainment abound. Sturgis is a short 20 miles down the canyon, home of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Expand your drive to the southern Hills and see our famous Faces, Mt Rushmore; an easy scenic drive (40 miles). Find Custer State park which features Buffalo, Deer, Elk, Mountain Goats, and Donkeys. A week isn't time enough to explore this beautiful play ground.
