The property is situated in Cezais, 4 km from Vouvant, one of the prettiest villages in France with its meandering river and Gothic church. The forest of Mervent-Vouvant is nearby and is full of activities including horse-riding, cycling, fishing, canoeing, and swimming to name but a few. There is also a restaurant, a beach and a Zoo here. The area is steeped in history of wars and legends, with many beautiful Chateaux Churches and Historical buildings to discover. The nearest towns are Fontenay le Comte and Chataigneraie about 14 and 7 km away respectively. The former in particular houses some remarkable buildings. There are lovely beaches on the coast about 60 km away, where the airport of La Rochelle is situated. 60 km north lies Nantes, another large airport, and Poitiers to the East is about an hour's drive. Niort is 30 mins drive away and has a fast train to Paris, which takes an hour and a half.

This chateau was a fantastic venue in every way. For history lovers it is a must. The building has been restored sympathetically bringing it up to date with all amenities yet without losing its historical charm. It was ideal for both our families giving all of us communal space to be together yet room for us to get away and read, relax by the pool or to take quiet walks amongst the local countryside. It proved to be a great base from which to go and explore the local markets, vineyards, and places of interest. Poitiers, La Rochelle and Saintes are within easy reach as is the coast. The locals were very welcoming and we felt very much at home. Thank you.
Memorable stay in the Vendee
We stayed here for a week with friends (2 families of 4) and there was plenty of room for us not to feel as if we were on top of each other. The chateau has such character, yet also has all the modern comforts of 21st century living. The pool was ideal for taking advantage of the good weather we had and for cooling off from the heat of the sun. Our kids would have been happy to stay at the chateau all day, everyday and spend their time in the pool or connected to the Wifi! If we return to the Vendee in the future I would definitely book this property again.
Wonderful piece of French history
My family and I stayed in the chateau for a local wedding in August and had a wonderful time. The property is every bit as lovely as the pictures show and had a very nice ambience throughout our stay. The house was well maintained and is clearly well looked after with a good mixture of period features and modern facilities.
the house is well positioned for exploring the region including the beautiful local town of Vouvant which has some interesting cafes and restaurants as well as some amazing architecture.
One added bonus is the local contact who oversees the property for the owner who was on hand when we arrived and kept us informed of local events and things to explore. Chris was a real help for our stay.
I would recommend this property to anyone interested in exploring this part of France.

The Chateau was home to a military Protestant Cavalry of 200 men and horses. In 1794 a republican army set it on fire. It wasn't until 1986 that restoration works began to restore it to its former glory. The main building consists of a medieval castle with remarkable architectural features. There are vast outbuildings, notably a stable, a barn, and a dried moat. It is situated on 2.5 acres of grounds and has been restored to the highest standard. The final stages of the extensive restoration works will finish in April 2011. The property boasts an outdoor swimming pool nestled in landscaped gardens. The property is also equipped with all the modern conveniences that one would expect, including high speed broadband, HD SAT TV, BluRay player and iPod compatible Stereo system. Please note that as this is an ancient edifice, there are many uneven surface and stone spiral staircases.
