About Melinda Reach

Jean-Paul and Melinda have owned the house since 1991. For many years they ran the popular 'Jean-Paul's Bistro' from this location. Since closing the restaurant, they have fully renovated the house for luxury living. They are now living in France for a good part of each year, dividing their time between Blue Hill and Villefranche sur Mer.

Melinda Reach purchased this house in 1991

Why Melinda Reach chose Acadia

The location was selected for unique setting, ocean-front views in the middle of our small, charming village.

What makes this house unique

We have been able to create an oasis in the village, with magnificent gardens and views, right in the center of everything. Each bedroom suite has complete privacy with its own modern bathroom, luxury linens, beautiful antique furniture and paintings from renowned artists. The house offers two living rooms, a large modern kitchen and formal dining room, along with a screened porch.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Your home was lovely, and Jean-Paul even lovelier. My six year-old son remarked as we pulled away in our car, “I’m going to miss Jean-Paul and Frankie . . . I’ll always remember them.” JP really went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable; he was the ultimate host. Please do thank him again for his warmth and generosity.

We had no idea that we were the first renters you had ever entertained in your gorgeous home! It was a delight and a privilege, and I hope that we didn’t leave it in too much disarray. We were a large party, and the size and layout of the house gave us plenty of space to spread out – I can definitely say that we were the envy of everyone attending my cousin’s wedding.

Thank you again for a perfect weekend, and best wishes to JP and your son –

Warmest regards,

Theresa

Words Fail . . . .

And likewise superlatives. Neither my wife nor myself can recall another week (all too brief) with greater pleasure than the one just spent at the Jean-Paul House in Blue Hill. It was a rather special anniversary occasion that brought eleven family members together, ages ranging from 9 to 79. This large, handsomely furnished and decorated house afforded us plenty of room indoors and in the ample, beautifully planted garden borders and terrace leading down to a semi-private cove.

We enjoy cooking together. A big, well-designed and fully-equipped kitchen made it easy. Blueberry pies (3 of them, a nephew's specialty), steamed lobsters (thanks, Jean-Paul, for setting things up), grilled meats (great Weber grill), quantities of pasta and salads (local farmers' markets came through) and one unforgotten unforgettable evening, a long lovely multi-course anniversary feast à la Française with candles and flowers and swell wines and wonderful food and song and super conviviality for all, catered for us by indefatigable J-P--a former restaurateur--and Melinda and their very talented chef friend, Joyelle.

Comfort and consideration were everywhere. Linens of the highest quality, excellent and amusing tableware, an inviting terrace for al fresco meals and bay views, Adirondack chairs for lounging and tide-gazing and bird--watching, plus plenty of spaces for just being quiet among energetic family cheerfulness.

Not to mention the attractions of the area. Some of us did a concert at Kneisel Hall, some kayaked on the bay and around Neskeag Point, some swam at a nearby lake, some visited the Wooden Boat School in Brooklin, we all lobster-lunched at Stonington while a regatta of full-bellied spinnakers sailed by, some shopped for paintings and wine and chocolate and coffee and ice cream.

But nothing can truly describe the delights of our week. Blue Hill's Main Street is a busy, active thoroughfare. Once you pass the gate into the Jean-Paul House's expansive green floriferous garden/terrace, you enter a warm welcoming world in itself. I'll be pretentious, apologies, and cite a French poet's words (no translation needed) for it: "calme, luxe, et volupté." See for yourself.

Wonderful Home! Great vacation

  • 5 of 5

All of the outstanding comments made by previous occupants are true. This home is absolutely amazing. Melinda and Jean-Paul are wonderful hosts. We stayed for two weeks with a family of 10, but with all of the room, we were not crowded. We did prepare several meals which is a pleasure in this fully-equipped kitchen including two ovens, dishwashers, and sinks. All of the cookware is high end, every utensil is provided, and there is enough dishware for a huge party. The Weber grill is handy. The AC was a life-saver and we used it daily in the afternoons and evenings as there was an unusual heat wave in the northeastern US. Melinda was visiting family during the first week so we became very close to Jean-Paul and his well-behaved French Poodle, Frankie. Jean-Paul has a wonderful personality and will assist you with any need including local sights, dining, kayaks, etc. We will miss him. Melinda handled the reservations and details and promptly responded to our e-mails which we appreciated.

We recommend lobster rolls and lobsters at the Fish Net. (we took out lobster dinners and ate them at the house). The Boat Yard is excellent and can be crowded, but service was good. The Harbor House is the place to go for breakfast. The Arborvine restaurant was more upscale and we enjoyed our dinner there. All dining is close. The Tradewinds supermarket (a Hannaford property) is only a few minutes away. Merrill & Hinckley is a local grocery with the morning paper and fresh-baked pies-try one! We also recommend day trips to Acadia and Bar Harbor (crowded), the Wooden Boat School in Brooklin (20 Min) and the Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsville (45 min).

All in our party loved this house and their vacation. We were sad to leave.

Glorious escape

  • 5 of 5

My family of 9 enjoyed a beautiful week in Blue Hill. Jean Paul and Melinda were very gracious hosts. The location couldn't be more perfect for walking, hiking and enjoying local art. The ensuite bedrooms were very comfortable as were all the furnishings. There were so many rooms to gather in that some were never even used! The home and garden were so welcoming as was the well equipped gourmet kitchen, where we enjoyed cooking lots of meals. You can always expect a wonderful evening breeze in the garden after a hot day, where you will never tire of the view. Everyone enjoyed the local views whether on morning jogs or hiking Blue Hill. The short drive to Echo beach for swimming or the more local East Blue Hill harbor was ideal for our toddlers.

Thank you for a wonderful week, wish we could have longer

  • 5 of 5

I want to thank you both for a wonderful stay at your home. We had four couples stay there and we all had plenty of room. I am sorry I did not get to meet Melinda as she was away with family. Jean Paul was there to greet us and was the perfect host through our entire stay. It was a beautiful property. The beautiful view of the harbor is what we came back to every night with a glass of wine. So sad to leave. Thank you both so much!

A gorgeous home with a fabulous view.

  • 5 of 5

Five couples stayed here for a week. This gorgeous home has everything you need and more. Just sitting on the patio watching the tide go in and out was so peaceful and calming. Melinda and Jean-Paul have created an amazing home with plenty of space for everyone. Jean-Paul was the perfect concierge who was available to help if you needed anything. Also, the location was so convient as some walked to restaurants, art galleries and the town dock where five kayaks were delivered. You won't find a nicer place to stay. It was so much better than we could have expected. We will recommend it to everyone. Thank you both for making our week so outstanding. Pat & Bob

Remarkable Property

  • 5 of 5

Three couples stayed at this beautiful house for a wonderful week in Blue Hill. The house is well appointed with everything you need and is extremely comfortable. The interior is spacious and the furnishing are sophisticated, yet functional. The house is well maintained and very clean. Perfect for multiple couples with a huge kitchen, dining room, and spacious bedrooms with private baths. There are multiple areas that allows everyone space for themselves as well as time together.

The house has a comfortable side porch, patio and outside sitting areas from which to watch the tides and fog, as well as beautiful gardens. It was rather hot when we checked in and we were very grateful for the air conditioning. The location is great, within walking distance to shops and restaurants. Easy driving distance to Acadia and other charming Maine towns.

Jean Paul and Melinda are friendly, available and very accommodating. All emails were answered promptly and transactions handled smoothly. It is obvious that they have put a lot of time, money and thoughtful amenities in maintaining their property.

We had a wonderful experience and definitely recommend this property. We would indeed stay here again.
