The only way to describe this comfortable Cape Haze residence is “quiet seclusion”. With lots of outdoor living space, you will never want to be inside! This tropical gem has a lot to offer. Perched on the bank of Amberjack Creek, this inviting home is surrounded by mature tropical plantings, including more than fifty palms of eight species (which is why I call this place 'El Palmeral' - The Palm Grove). Also, avocado, mango, bananas, bromeliads, orchids and much more.

There is a private dock equipped with a 3,500 lb. boat lift, water, electricity and an underwater 'snook' light. Our dock is on Amberjack Creek, a tidal inlet creek, which provides shallow-draft access to the Gulf of Mexico. The creek abounds with wildlife - fish from the dock or watch for the Sandhill Cranes, Manatees and the throngs of leaping mullet, among others. The dock includes a 6'x8' floating dock extension which makes launching of the two kayaks a breeze! The kayaks are high-tech, Swedish-designed 'Point 65 North' modular kayaks, which can be configured as one person or tandem kayaks.

Bring your boat and use our docking facilities, or, use our boat! We provide optional use of our 15'4'' Gheenoe - a 3-person flat-bottom fishing boat provisioned with a Minn Kota 45 lb thrust trolling motor, which is perfect for exploring/fishing the tidal creeks and shallow waters in our area. It is 20 minutes by boat (at "no wake" speeds) down the tidal creek through mangrove mazes to the turquoise blue waters of Gasparilla Sound and an additional 5 minutes from there to Gasparilla Pass - with good fishing and wildlife viewing all along the route.

The shell-covered back yard ties the creek side-setting seamlessly into the 1,300 square foot screen-enclosed pool and lanai, for what one visitor described as an 'obnoxiously paradisical' experience.

This is truly a 4-season destination, with its lush tropical plantings, screen-caged, heated pool with therapy jet bench and large screened/glassed lanai with 2 overhead fans. The pool area includes an awning-covered dining area with a teak dining table and seating for 6 to 8. The lanai has two sets of pocket, double sliding doors from the house - one from the kitchen/dining area and the other from the Master Bedroom - which, when open, expand those spaces to the outside. The screened lanai itself has a system of compound sliding doors, which can be fully opened to take advantage of pleasant weather and the almost constant, gentle Gulf breeze, or closed to allow the space to be heated or cooled as necessary. Whether opened or closed the lanai is a wonderful place to entertain, or simply enjoy the view of the tropical plantings, creek and frequent wildlife.

Walk down to the creek-side hammock and disappear for a while with a good book…this home is equipped for relaxation, and is also within walking distance of the local post office, grocery store, bank and pizza parlor!

As members of the Cape Haze POA, we have access to the association's 400 yd long, private, Gulf beach, adjacent to Cape Haze on Don Pedro Island. The beach is accessible, using our kayaks, from Don Pedro Island State Park's 100 acre land base, .9 miles from our property. It is a 4-minute (280 yard) paddle from the Park's dock to our community dock on the island, then a 5-minute (500 yard) walk to the Gulf beach (see the map of the route in the photo section).

In addition to the beaches adjacent to us on Don Pedro (Palm) Island, which are accessible by kayak, boat or ferry, the closest beach by car is at 19th St. on Gasparilla Island (Boca Grande), about 10 minutes away. Once you reach 19th St. there is beach access on every street all the way to the south end of the island, which is another 3 1/2 miles. So there are literally dozens of Gulf beaches. You can also drive north to Manasota Key in Englewood which is only about 15 minutes away. Once on Manasota Key there are three major county park beaches at the north, middle and south end of the Key, as well as Stump Pass State Park, which is at the very south end of the Key and is absolutely stunning.

It is only 4 minutes by car to the Boca Grande Causeway and minutes (1 to 15) to multiple Gulf beaches, fine-dining restaurants, multiple state parks, nature preserves, walking & biking trails, boat tours, fishing trips, etc.

Each guest is provided with an "e-key" for keyless entry valid for the length of their stay. Check-in is 4:00 pm and check-out is 10:00 am. Upon arrival guests are provided with a detailed Guest Manual, describing all of the ins and outs of the property, including entertainment system operation, trash day, local resources and activities, etc.

Rental fees for reservations made more than 60 days in advance of your arrival date can be made in 2 or 3 installment payments.

About Richard Haynes

My name is Richard Haynes. I was raised in Virginia, Florida, Maryland and DC during the 50s and 60s. When we were not living in Florida, we still visited annually for vacation and to see family in Sarasota and Fort Pierce (Sarasota's Marie Selby was my great-aunt). Trips to Florida were always the highlight of the year. We started visiting Captiva annually (just after the bridge was built in the mid-60s). However, when Captiva started getting built up, our Mother switched to Boca Grande in the mid-70s, staying at the Gasparilla Inn at first - later buying a 1911 cottage in the historic district. For me, moving back to Florida on a full-time basis has been a dream come true, being a time of renewal and an opportunity to rediscover all of those things I loved about the Gulf coast as a child.

Why Richard Haynes chose Placida

Having lived in and visited different parts of Florida, the southwest Gulf coast is my favorite by far. Within that region, the Cape Haze/Lemon Bay/Englewood area is the 'sweet spot' for me. Only 1 hour from all of the resources and activities offered by Sarasota and Fort Myers, it is still a small community with much of the charm of 'Old Florida' that I recall from my youth. The Cape Haze/Placida area is off the beaten path and generally slow paced. Access to beautiful, natural areas and Gulf beaches is exceptional. For me, our house is a refinement of all of those qualities - a self-contained, tropical Florida haven.

We are in the tropical zone of far South Florida, which means that not only all the citrus family can be grown here, but also coconuts, mangos, papaya, bananas, etc., giving the area a truly tropical feeling.

What makes this house unique

This property has an intimate warmth, which is hard to find at any price. The comforts of the back yard with its screened lanai and pool enclosure, multiple seating areas, luxuriant tropical foliage and waterside setting are absolutely seductive. You may come here with the idea of having it be your base-camp and find that it is your destination.

Had a great time! So relaxing. Enjoyed swimming in the pool. So good to chill out and this was a much needed mini-vacay. Did go to a couple of the nearby state parks - wonderful time with the family. Would Love to come back.

Oh, and the bikes rode really well.

The dock is equipped with an underwater snook light, which operates at night to attract fish dockside, for viewing and fishing. The two folding, transportable bikes are great for the extensive bike trails close by - most notably the Cape Haze Pioneer Bike Trail (8 miles long) and the Gasparilla Island Bike Trail (6.5 miles long) which are only 4 minutes away. In addition to Gasparilla's trail, the whole island is bike friendly and a delight to explore in this way. We encourage our guests to experience the adventure of visiting our Cape Haze Property Owners Association Gulf beach on Don Pedro Island. Transport our modular kayaks 90 seconds to the land-base of the park by car; use the kayak dolly for the 3 minute walk to the beach; paddle 4 minutes across the bay to the CHPOA dock and walk the 5 minutes along the sandy trail through the sabal palms and seagrapes to our beautiful secluded Gulf beach, adjacent to unspoiled 230 acre Don Pedro Island State park (see map in 'Photos').

Comfortable, private, clean and well supplied home.

Very comfortable & private home with many amenities. Nice pool with many palm trees & greenery surrounding the home. The kitchen is well supplied & prior renters leave leftover items in the refrigerator. All rooms are clean, well supplied & contain many electronic items. The home is close to many beaches and a reasonable distance to other communities & restaurants. Owner of home was very available to questions, etc. We would certainly return.

Great place, great host

House was amazing. Pool amazing. The bikes, the kayaks were great. It was our pleasure to stay here and it will be yours as well. Boca Grande is a quiet beach. Lots of restaurants and things to do. FIX Charters showed us a good time as well.

Well equipped, clean and great location!

We were surprised to find out the house was very well equipped with extras both in Kitchen and for Entertainment. House was clean and everything was ready for our arrival. We loved being so close to the grocery store (walking distance) and Boca Grande Beach is only 10 minutes away and it was beautiful. Richard (the owner) called me the second day after we arrived to ask if everything was ok and if we needed anything extra. We had an amazing time and highly recommend this place!

Longboat Key

A Little Piece of Paradise

The house and property are fabulous - very comfortable and private. Kayaking and boating are beautiful right off the dock at the house. Saw manatees, alligators and lots of bird life. Easy access to Boca Grande and Gasparilla Island while close to Publix and lots of shops and restaurants nearby. Richard was a great host - responded quickly to all communications.

We just wanted to thank you for a wonderful vacation at your home... It truly was a little slice of Heaven! We saw alligators and manatee from your dock. The children were obsessed with the pool.
