Enjoy activities, beautiful lodging and more at one Colorado's most scenic outdoor paradises located only minutes outside Fort Collins: Horesetooth Reservoir!

In 1933, the Poudre Valley was enduring years of drought and dust storms and the farmers began realizing the need for more water to satisfy the thrist of the crop-bearing farms around Fort Collins. Knowing the water from the Poudre River was inconsistent, somtimes providing too much and at other times not enough, Horsetooth Reservoir was developed to solve the problem.

The reservoir acquired its name from the unique rock formation that sits above the large body of water. There is an old Native American legend regarding theis famous stone. The Valley of Contentment (today's Horsetooth Reservoir) was once guarded by a giant so that no buffalo, deer or antelope were hunted in the valley. Cheif Maunamoku led Indians to slay the giant. In killing the giant, the Chief slashed at his heart first in the center then on the right and then on the left with a tomahawk from the heavens. The next day the giant turned to stone and is now known as Horsetooth Rock.

Today, the 6.5-mile reservoir is a favorite recreation spot for activities such as boating, fishing, swimming, waterskiing, sailing and picnicking. There are many miles of trails here for mountain biking, horseback riding, and hiking. Additionally, on the east side of the reservoir is one of the best spots in Colorado for bouldering.

Horsetooth Reservoir is open year-round and included RV spots, campsites, and cabins, all managed by Larimer County Natural Areas. If camping isn't your style, relax in one of the condos or bed & breakfasts in the area and rent a boat at the local marina.

Rocky Mountain National Park

Just 35 miles from Fort Collins, the peaks of Rocky Mountain National Park soar to more than 13,000 feet and form the Continental Divide. The town of Estes Park sits at the eastern edge of the park. Rocky Mountain National Park covers 410 square miles and includes Longs Peak (14,255 feet high), 18 named peaks above 13,000 feet, 150 named lakes, and the highest continuously paved highway in the U.S. -- Trail Ridge Road. The road is usually open from Memorial Day until early October. However, the park is open year-round and lower elevation roads are open during the winter. The visitors' center provides information on the history, environment and recreational opportunities in the park. Give yourself plenty of time on this trip, so an early start is advisable. Expect traffic and slow travel in the park during summer.

A day in Fort Collins can be filled with things to do and see. Where else could you spend the morning admiring a zoo-full of fanciful metal sculptures, the afternoon touring a brewery, and the evening playing miniature golf? Build your own family vacation package with some of the many family-friendly activities available in one of the best places to visit in Colorado! Fort Collins' attractions provide something for everyone.

Fort Collins regularly rates high on any list of towns that are populated by fit residents with excellent access to recreational facilities. A quick glance at the the people enjoying the city’s 50 parks, 280+ miles of trails, including paved and unpaved walking and bike trails, four recreation centers and swimming pools, three public golf courses and a racquet sport complex, two sheets of ice for organized hockey games as well as free skating, even the skateboard and off-leash dog parks, and you’ll want to get out there with them.

Eat, drink and be merry. In Fort Collins your options are open - in the mood for sushi? Steak? A cinnamon roll the size of a softball?? All that, and more, waits in local restaurants and when the occasion calls for a friendly libation and live music, Fort Collins? watering holes are more than up for the challenge. And the beer in Fort Collins is world class!

Downtown offers a wide range of options, from pizza to a quick healthy lunch, fine dining to Internet cafes. From the intersection of College and Mountain Avenues, the heart of Fort Collins, you can walk three blocks in any direction and find something to satisfy your appetite and your wallet. If you're staying in a hotel on the Harmony corridor, your options for dining are just as vast. Looking for a hearty meal after a day on the trails? Local and well-known flavors abound from steaks to seafood, from margaritas to mojitos, you are sure to find it all.

Fort Collins is the largest producer of beer in Colorado and the state is ranked first in the country in volume produced by breweries (kind of ironic for a town that was 'dry' until 1969). Each brewery has its own distinctive style, from one of the world's largest operations to a leader in eco-friendly and sustainable business practices. To get a taste of award-winning lagers, pilsners and ales year-round, take our Foam on the Range Tour, or see below for each individual brewery's contact information. The annual Colorado Brewers Festival showcases the state of the state's suds on the last weekend in June. The oldest annual brewfest in Colorado, the Old Town event is open solely to Colorado breweries, including our local hosts.

Family friendly activities abound in and around Fort Collins. Who wouldn’t want to ride a miniature train through one of the city’s prettiest parks? After that, skip across the street and spend the afternoon in the City Park Pool, com0pletely remodeled in 2004 with water features, slides, zero-depth entry, and a lazy river and wading pool, all with the youngest swimmers in mind. If you’re at City Park on a summer weekend, grab a ride to Old Town on the only original restored city streetcar operating in the western U.S. Car 21 you through the heart of old Fort Collins along the broad landscaped center of Mountain Avenue.

Get spectacular views of Colorado from an entirely different vantage point - up in the air! For a once-in-a-lifetime sort of experience, a hot air balloon is the way to go.
