Overview

About the property

1 Bedroom, loft, 1 1/2 bathrooms with mountain views.

My cozy cabin has a king-size bed in the bedroom and a double (full-size) bed in the loft. There are two fold out mats for children. The main floor includes a seating area with a wood-burning stove (wood provided), a dining area, kitchen, bedroom and bath. The cabin kitchen is fully equipped with a large butcher block counter. Bathroom downstairs has a shower with window for views out the skylight and a clawfoot tub for long, hot soaks. Granny’s old sideboard holds your linens in the loft, accessed by an oak spiral staircase. Bathroom in the loft has separate toilet room and beautiful copper hand sink.

There is phone and WiFi internet access, a CD player for music, but NO television or cable reception. So bring your laptop for DVDs or begin thinking of what you will say in conversation with your companions, or to yourself as you meditate. An antique cupboard holds cards and old-fashioned board games.

The kitchen has essential cooking utensils, toaster, waffle maker, blender, ice crusher, coffeemaker and coffee grinder, microwave, stove, refrigerator, basic bowls and pans. Dishes and flatware: service for six.

Linens Provided: White sheets and towels. (White robes available for purchase.) Sorry, no washer/dryer or dishwasher. Mi-Wuk Wash n’ Dry has large capacity washers and dryers.

Other Amenities: Limited supply of paper towels, toilet paper, garbage bags, liquid dishwashing soap, cleaning supplies, new sponge, ziplock bags, foil, saran wrap.

Outdoor Features: Small BBQ; sunny south deck with long distance views has redwood table and benches; cool, shady North deck with view to deer trail has café table with chairs. Less than a quarter mile walk down Muheli and you are into the woods with trails through the forest.

Great meditation retreat, romantic getaway, privacy when your group is renting a large place nearby, or nice accommodation for two couples or a small family. Children welcome; No Pets; Non-Smoking.

About Sharon Gray

I am an introvert, an avid reader, a collage fanatic and a fabric artist. This is the first time the A-frame Cabin on Muheli has been offered as a vacation rental. In the late nineties, I began a major remodeling project, seeking to save the essence of the cabin feel (in particular the white-washed knotty pine interior) and to assure the longevity of the structure (including jacking up the cabin to install a new foundation underneath and installing insulation on the outside of the white-washed knotty pine.) For the past three years, I have lived in the woods full-time, using the cabin as my fabric arts studio. I have now moved to Sonora so am close by to assist you if I am needed. I hope you enjoy the cabin as much as I do.

Sharon Gray purchased this cabin in 1983

Why Sharon Gray chose Gold Country & High Sierra

The Gold Country was always a favorite get-a-way, a quick commute from the Bay Area with little snow hassle on Highway 108 on a Sunday night after a weekend in the mountains. For many years my family spent most weekends at the cabin and every Thanksgiving. We invited friends and family for cross-country skiing in the winter and hiking in the summer, attended the Columbia and Sonora parades, local live theater performances and other local events like ranger talks, the loggers jamboree, the apple ranch for their pie or a train ride. Our children all took cabin baths together in the claw foot tub. Later, when I moved to Santa Cruz, I used the cabin as a retreat during the summer months when school was out, often staying several weeks.

What makes this cabin unique

The cabin sits high above Muheli Road so the views from the south deck are wonderful. The A-frame structure is classic seventies, and I like the feeling of privacy while enjoying the sun coming in the south windows. I can stretch out on the couch and watch the clouds float by or camp out on the deck at night to watch the stars. The village is within walking distance for something needed at the store or a hamburger for lunch, but you will probably want to travel by car to explore the scenic Highway 108 corridor.

Sharon was a wonderful host and her home is a jewel. A wonderful romantic retreat with incredible views, yet with absolute privacy. Comfortable and fun. Can’t recommend more highly.

Cozy cabin in a beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

My daughter and I rented the cabin looking forward to a relaxing weekend getaway in the mountains. The cabin exceeded our expectations. The setting in the midst of beautiful pines on a quiet street away from the highway was fabulous. The cabin was decorated in an adorable way with much attention to detail. The kitchen and bathrooms were very up to date while still fitting in nicely with the rustic look of the cabin. Everything was spotlessly clean. There were many little touches which made our visit much easier, towels and linens provided, shampoo and soap in the bathroom, tissues, paper towels, condiments, etc. We loved sitting on the deck enjoying the beautiful view. I look forward to staying here again.

The driveway knocks the rating down. It is steep and I can see how it would be a problem in bad weat

We came for solitude and nature and this was a good base for those.

Lovely Mountain Cabin

  • 4 of 5

We loved this peaceful and serene mountain cabin. Beautiful refurbished while keeping it's cabin feel. All the wonderful historical items, photos and books gave us a glimpse of the community's past. We enjoyed relaxing on the deck and using the deck reclining chairs to view the night sky. The only draw back for us was the downstairs king bed. The person against the wall had to climb over and wake the other if you have to get out of bed at night. Otherwise we loved this well equipped cabin with warmed tile floors.

House with a great view

  • 4 of 5

The house was small, but open to the deck and views which were beautiful. We enjoyed eating on the deck and watching the sunrise and sunsets. This was a real plus to the experience. The house was clean and for the most part had all that we needed. The kitchen is stocked, but cooking should be simple. There is one private bedroom with other bed in a loft, so open. The plus with the loft is that there is a bathroom so that the person is not walking downstairs in the middle of the night. There is a hiking trail near by which is nice but would use with caution as it is used by ATVs. The house is very near many beautiful hikes in the National park and the lake (more commercial but some nice parts). We went as far as the Sonora pass and hiked the area which was great. Sharon, the host, was great, very responsive to our questions.
