Perfect house for a large family or two, convenient location

  • 5 of 5

Spent a week at Casa das Palmas with another family over Easter break. There were 10 of us in all and the house worked extremely well for us. The pool was wonderful, the beach is close by (and beautiful), and the house itself was comfortable and clean. We had most of our meals at the house, except for a few dinners, which we enjoyed at nearby restaurants. Several questions came up over the course of the week and the owner's rep was extremely responsive to each and every one of them. Highly recommend! Would definitely return!

First time to Costa Rica

  • 5 of 5

We are a family of 6 from Southern California and lured to Costa Rica for the surf/yoga lifestyle of Nosara. We only had word of mouth and internet searches/reviews to book our trip. First of all, the property manager - Tiffany - is awesome. She is from Canada and speaks perfect English. Before our trip, we connected by email and she gave us better directions to Nosara than Google maps. She met us on the property on time and was responsive by phone, text, or email during our stay. Now for the house, as you can see on the pictures there are bars on the windows and doors. This is to deter petty theft crimes. My wife was paranoid about crime so we would always lock all doors/gates even when we were inside the house and used the safe for all valuables. During our entire 5 days there, we had zero issues with crime or shady activity. The property was visited by the gardener, pool man and a family of monkeys. Totally safe. The house is located next to playa pelada which is just north of playa guinones(main surfing beach). Playa pelada is a beautiful alcove of reefs and patches of sandy beach. You really can't surf in this area. We had to drive to playa guinones each day for the beach. The roads to the house requires 4WD. We had a land cruiser the entire time and it was perfect. Initially, I booked a golf cart with limo dan but it was not 4WD. I would recommend ATV if you want but realize it's very hot and dusty. Food is great but not inexpensive and every meal we ate seemed to cost about the same regardless if it was fine dining by the ocean or taco shops on the street.

A great house in an amazing location!

  • 5 of 5

Let me start off by saying that we are a family that travels a lot. We look for different experiences and would typically not return to the same destination. This all changed when found this amazing place at the north end of Playa Pelada 6 years ago. We have been back 5 times, staying in this house 4 times.

If you are reading this, you probably know Nosara is highly regarded as a top tourism destination. Nosara is made up of several beaches which include Playa Garza, Playa Guiones (main beach), Playa Pelada, Playa Nosara and Ostional. Guiones is the main tourist area where most of the tourism infrastructure is located. It is renowned for its surfing and has consistent waves and beach breaks for all levels and abilities. Ostional is home to the largest nesting site for Olive Ridley Sea Turtles in the world, which nest for a few days every month, a week or so before the new moon. Playa Pelada has virtually no development and is one of the most picturesque beaches in Costa Rica having volcanic outcrops and small sandy bays. The house is located at the North end of the Beach in an area with just a handful of houses. The beach is almost as close as you can get to the beach as there is no development permitted along the shoreline. It is easily accessible (3 min walk) down a small dirt path.

About the house - This house has a unique layout which is convenient for large groups. We have travelled with other families with small children and have each had our spaces and washrooms. The central location of the pool makes it conducive for drinks and swimming with sun and shade. It is always well kept and you never know what animals will drop by for a visit. It is common to see exotic birds, coatimundis, raccoons, iguanas, and howler monkeys poolside. The living room and kitchen are well equipped, simple and functional. There is a nice indoor and outdoor dining tables if you choose to cook your own meals. I highly recommended the pescaderia (fish vendor) beside Il Basilica or in San Juanillio - Fresh Yellow Fin Tuna is about $6/lb so needless to say we ate a lot of Sushimi.

Like most remote places comes some inconveniences - power outages, water shortages, and driving to amenities are a reality here. Bring flashlights and expect these type of things.

So to conclude - if you are looking for a true costa rica experience this is for you. If you pack in a Luis Vuitton Suitcase look at the resorts or Manual Antonio.

This place was GREAT! Very moden with Costa Rican style. I wish we could have stayed longer.

  • 5 of 5

I would definitely stay here again if its available. Tiffany was very helpful when we checked in & told us everything about the place. The house is in a quiet neighborhood close enough to the beach to hear the ocean at night. The beach access is 5 minutes from front door to toes in the ocean. If you like to cook the house is fully decked out with plenty of cooking gadgets & plenty of room. We had a couple nice meals with a group of friends around the poolside table. Pelada has a few good restaurants & bars. We liked El Chivo, Il Pepperoni & La Luna. A quick drive or 10 min walk along the beach gets you to Playa Guiones which offers dozens of other restaurants, bars, shops & things to do. Can't beat this place for the price!

Not a Very Good Christmas!

  • 4 of 5

My family and I and another family spent Christmas in Nosara at Casa dos Palmas. We arrived on December 17th and were their until December 30th. Our first night was a learning experience to say the least. We were robbed while we were asleep, my purse was stolen with all of our passports, ID, cell phones, money, well as my wedding ring. We called Tiffaney and she was able to contact us with the Nosara Police as well as the Canadian Embassy. The police were helpful but the language barrier was very difficult, thank goodness for Google translate. We figured since we met Tiffaney the night before at the bar El Chivos, so we could follow her to Casa dos Palmas we were being watched to find out who the new gringos were in town. That morning of the robbery we searched the whole area of the house but nothing was found; we also spoke to the locals who were very helpful and nice. The locals ensured us that who ever broke into the house didn't have any harmful intensions they were just after anything they could get for money. Tiffaney on the other hand was not very accommodating with our situation, not once while we were there did she call to see how we were doing or if there is anything she could do. We could not make any phone calls to cancel our credit cards or even call the Embassy. She would never come to the house we had to meet her at the bar so we could use her cell phone. I did ask her to come to the house because of the language barrier we had with the police but she said there was nothing she could do. She did send her assistant but her english was not very good. However, if there was some thing wrong or we needed something for the house she was accommodating. Because of limited funds we were unable to go on any excursions, but the beach was a 5 min walk and the ocean was fantastic! Also the roads are not very good, lots of pot holes and wash boards so if you can try to rent a quad it will be a lot easier for you. There are a lot of people, kids and dogs walking and crossing over on the roads. So PLEASE SLOW DOWN!

So my warning to anyone stay at Casa do Palmas...Lock the house up tight and put the security system on! Make sure you put all your valuables and ID in the safe! I don't want to see what happen to us, happen to you.

Owner's Response: When new guests check into Casa dos Palmas, our property manager Tiffany along with her staff make it a point to go over all of the security we have in place for the house, with everyone that is present at check-in. They explain how to set the monitored security system, how to use and set the combination to open and close the safe to store any valuables and how to properly lock and dead bolt both doors front and back to the main house when leaving the property for dinner, sight-seeing etc. and most importantly when you go to bed. Unfortunately, like many places anywhere in the world, Nosara has a few local petty thieves that will take what they can if the opportunity becomes available. For this reason we tell our guests not to leave valuables out in plain sight especially when they leave the house, and first and foremost to be sure all doors are locked securely when you go to bed, again put anything valuable in the safe and put any purses, computers, etc. out of sight or better yet bring them to your bedroom when you retire for the night. If these security precautions are put into place, it is almost impossible for anyone to gain access to the house. The smartest thing for people to do when vacationing in Nosara is to treat the security when they are leaving the property or before they go to bed in the evening the same way they would when locking up their own homes.

Playa Pelada Rental

  • 4 of 5

Nosara is fun for a beach, surfing vacation. Expect very dusty environment, roads aren't paved and very bumpy. Playa Pelada, a 5 minute walk, is good for swimming and wide beach for young kids. La Luna & El Chivo restaurants are great. House has 2 spacious bedrooms upstairs and 2 bedrooms separated from house, in a small separate building out at the pool. House is clean. No smoke detectors, must lock up at night, and gates on all windows. I'd wish the house would have lockable trash cans outside in lieu of leaving garbage on street for animals. We used ATV place at Hotel de Paris. Went ATV up to mountains, then horse back riding with a farmer, to his mother's house in woods for a traditional costa rican lunch. Delicious. It was a 5 hour trip; best thing we did. Bring bandana to wrap around your mouth/nose due to roads. Shopping in town is fun, there are a few nice shops. Enjoy the beach! Driving from Liberia was a 3 hr trip. Get a 4x4 !! No road signs, so be prepared to get lost. It would be helpful to provide guests with a good map ahead of time.
