About Michael VanCuren

My wife and I have lived on the Outer Banks for over 30 years. We love the beach and own several rental properties. Of all our properties, Sails Commission is our favorite and the one we use as our home away from home. You may ask why we need a home away from home while living on the Outer Banks. Once you have spent your vacation at this house you will see why. This house is our refuge from the real world. Although the house is rented most of the time, we love the Outer Banks in the fall and winter. We spend many days wrapped up on the front deck enjoying the view. We may even get lucky and catch a view of an occasional whale traveling north.

Why Not. Once you stay here you will wonder why you stayed anywhere else. It is a great location and the cottage is perfect for families that don't want to travel with large groups. But if you are looking for a lot of fancy amenities this cottage is not for you. It is priced affordable so that the smaller families can be this close to the beach.

Great house, great location, responsive owner

This was our fourth visit and clearly we are happy with the house. It is well maintained, right on the beach, with an outside eating area and grill for those like us who enjoy dinners outdoors. The location is private but convenient to shopping. Michael the owner was very helpful as usual when any needs arose.

Very Convenient to the Beach

Had a great time. Thank you Michael for your attentiveness. Two things that you can look after that would have increased our satisfaction. First, when it rains, the water pools at the end of the driveway. This made our exit and entrance to the driveway difficult. For most of the days of the week, we could not see the driveway at the entrance. We also road bikes and this was most difficult, especially with our grandchildren. The second area of improvement would be to upgrade your kitchen utensils, cookware, and pots and pans. We made due with what we had, however, we had greater expectations. Thanks again for our wonderful stay.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review and I am glad you had a great time. I can only agree with you about the water accumulation along the street at the end of the driveway. It has been a problem the 20 plus years I have owned the house. It is a town issue and the easement and bike path at the driveway entrance is town property and out of my control. Since we experienced several days of torrential rains during your visit, drainage and evaporation was slow. I will inspect the kitchen utensils at the end of this year rental season and make the necessary changes. Thank you once again for choosing my cottage for your trip to the Outer Banks. I'm sure your comments will be helpful to potential guest.

The beach house was perfect for our family! The accommodations were excellent, everything you would need to make life easy were already at the house! The house was literally steps away from the beach and very convenient if you don't want to walk a long way with a lot of heavy beach gear! The view was priceless from the top deck and so relaxing! My family of 8 stayed very comfortable. Mike has really thought of detail to help make your stay as stress free as possible! On that note...Mike is extremely prompt to answer any questions, emails or even phone calls! He genuinely means it when he says he wants your Vacation not to stress you out! We do plan to return to this home and make it a tradition for our family! Thanks Mike! We love it there!

Perfect Location and Right Fit for Our Family

This location of this property was great, in Nags Head and close to Kitty Hawk and Manteo. Also, it was between the two peirs and not near any hotels so the beach was quiet and essentially only occupied by those people in the houses on the beach. All the activities are still close by. Jockeys Ridge, Wright Brother Memorial, Lost Colony, Manteo, Cape Hatteras and Corolla just to name a few. The home was clean and came fully equipped, but most importantly was 200 feet from the ocean. The set up worked awesome for our family. One bedroom, bathroom, living room, dining room and kitchen up top and three bedrooms, a bathroom and a family room downstairs. With three older children this was a perfect setup for our family. All bedrooms, the living room and the family room have TVs with cable and the wireless internet was great. Michael was very easy to work with and provided quick feedback related to any questions we had. On the day before we left he checked to ensure our stay was good and if there was anything he needed to know about that needed his attention. He asked you text when you leave so he can get his cleaners in before the next guest. This works great because the cleaning can get done promptly and allowed us to get in by 1pm, essentially picking up another 1/2 day on the beach!!! Thanks Michael for making our stay in Nags Head a great one.

Although my cottage may be considered off the beaten path, it is still close to all major attractions such as The Lost Colony Outdoor Drama, Bodie Island Lighthouse, Pirates Cove Marina and much more. You are also in close driving range to many great restaurants and shopping. The convenient pedestrian path at the end of the driveway is great for bikers, joggers, or just a casual walk.

Cancellation Policy:

13. HURRICANE OR STORM POLICY: No refunds will be given unless:
a. The National Weather Service orders mandatory evacuation in a "Tropical
Storm/Hurricane Warning area" and/or a "mandatory evacuation order" has been issued for the Tropical Storm/Hurricane Warning" area of residence of a vacationing guest. The day that the National Weather Service orders a mandatory evacuation order in a "Tropical
Storm/Hurricane Warning," area, we will refund:

a. Any unused portion of rent from a guest currently registered,

b. Any unused portion of rent from a guest that is scheduled to arrive, and wants to shorten their stay, to arrive after the Hurricane Warning is lifted; and

c. Any advance rents collected or deposited for a reservation that is scheduled to arrive during the "Hurricane Warning" period.

14. CANCELLATION: In the event Tenant cancels his reservation of the leased property
and said property is not re-rented during the entire term set out above, then all rent
consideration previously tendered will be forfeited by Tenant and retained by Owner. All
cancellations must be in writing. If the property is re-rented, then rent, taxes and/or
security deposit consideration previously tendered by Tenant will be refunded to him,
less a service fee of $200.00, plus any other reasonable costs to re-rent the property.
The Tenant shall not assign this agreement or sublet the property in whole or in part. All
sublets must be handled directly by property owner.
