Overview

About the property

Victorian house with 2012 addition, comfortably houses 6 adults

Sand Cove Cottage offers the charm of an all-season Victorian house, built in 1900, with an addition completed in 2012. Unobstructed water views from all the south-facing rooms: large family room with Brazilian cherry floor and flat-screen TV; master bedroom with king-size bed and en suite bath; queen bedroom and twin bedroom with shared bath; other bedrooms include a downstairs double with en suite bath, and two twin bedrooms. All bedrooms have ceiling fans. Comfortably houses 6 adults. Newly remodeled kitchen and outdoor grill.

Sand Cove Cottage is just across the street from Sand Beach and steps from the Grindstone Neck 9-hole public golf course with water views on every hole. The cottage's scenic location overlooks Sand Cove where yachts are moored, sailboats race, bald eagles soar, seals swim, and lobster fishermen check their pots. It's a perfect spot for relaxing in Adirondack chairs on the lawn or Cape Cod deck chairs on the small front deck. The quiet location is within walking distance of the village center with its antique shops, Schoodic Visitors Center, and historic Hammond Hall, home of the Schoodic Arts Festival. August brings the popular Winter Harbor Lobster Festival complete with lobster boat races and parade. Free Island Explorer bus transportation to Acadia National Park's nearby Schoodic Point, the Schoodic Education and Resource Center, and the ferry to Bar Harbor. Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island is an hour away by car or by ferry across Frenchman’s Bay. Bicycle and kayak rentals are available locally.

The classic Downeast fishing village of Winter Harbor is at the gateway to Acadia National Park’s Schoodic section with miles of majestic rocky coast, dramatic surf, hiking trails, picnic areas, and nature center. It offers a perfect retreat from the summer crowds of Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island but is close enough for frequent day trips to take advantage of Acadia's amazing resources: climb the Beehive and other peaks, drive to the summit of Cadillac, bike the carriage roads, embark on whale watch tours, eat popovers at the Jordan Pond Teahouse, check out the surf at Thunder Hole and the shops in Bar Harbor.

About Ann

We live on a farm in northwest Connecticut where we have raised our five children, now all adults. We have vacationed in Maine since our children were little. Each summer we camped on Mount Desert Island where climbing the mountains of Acadia National Park was like Disney World for the kids.

Ann purchased this house in 1993

Why Ann chose Acadia

We found our house in Winter Harbor by chance, on a biking day trip to Schoodic Point, and immediately fell in love with the quaint fishing village. We knew it would provide the perfect retreat from the crowds on Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park in the busy summer months. Yet it was close enough for day trips to our favorite spots: hikes up Penobscot and Sargent Mountains followed by popovers and tea at Jordan Pond.

What makes this house unique

Location is everything and this house has spectacular unobstructed views of the water which at high tide comes right up to the granite boulders across the street. This historic New England house was built in 1900 and has wonderful architectural features such as high ceilings, Victorian woodwork, and tall windows giving the older part of the house its charm. We built a large addition to accommodate our family and to create comfortable and separate living spaces for two families.

Pleasant house

  • 5 of 5

We arrived late in the evening but had no problem finding the house. Everything is just as described. House is clean and spacious, more than enough room for three is us. The view from the front of the house facing the bay was pleasant. The house is located in a small town off the main path with limited stores and eating facilities. Some of them begin to close for the season. Bar Harbor is only 30 minutes away and so is Acadia National Park. Overall, we enjoyed our stay.

An Amazing Location

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful house in the most beautiful corner of Maine. We've rented vacation homes in many places, but none can compare with this house. Updated with all the conveniences, ample bedrooms and bathrooms and a view that can't be beat. The owners work hard to make sure your stay is perfect.

The village of Winter Harbor is adorable with lots of places to eat and you are very close to Acadia Natonal Park and everything that Mount Desert Island has to offer.

Five Stars on Everything!

  • 5 of 5

We are 7 ladies who regularly vacation together in Maine. Every vacation rental has its surprises, but all the surprises here were wonderful. All of us agree, this property rates 5 stars in every aspect. Five stars for being super clean (high priority for us). Five stars for the setting—a beautiful beach and view of water and mountains. Five stars for the house itself. Wonderful beds and linens and comfortable sofas and chairs. Lovely spaces. Things we especially enjoyed: leisurely coffee on the deck in the mornings, watching the boats and tides; four bathrooms (great showers); lying in bed and hearing the waves on the beach; plenty of space inside the house for us to find quiet time alone; the enclosed porch, with a table and deck chairs. This is not just a rental property, it is the owners’ personal treasure, and that's reflected in the quality of detail. Five stars for owners and caretakers; we appreciated their thoughtfulness, beyond just the business transaction. This is the perfect location to experience Acadia without the traffic and crowds of Bar Harbor. Schoodic (just a little over a mile away) has some of the most spectacular scenery in all of Acadia. Winter Harbor has interesting shops and several choices of restaurants. It's a very interesting and walkable town, and the street in front of Sand Cove Cottage seems to be a favorite for walkers and joggers (and wild turkeys and foxes!) The house has privacy and peace on a quiet street at the edge of the village. Wonderful stay!

Fantastic

  • 5 of 5

Wow, fantastic is the word to describe the house, the view, and the community. We have rented several houses before and this on is the best, very clean and well kept. The view of the harbor is as good as it gets, and we enjoyed being able to walk to breakfast, visit the Five & Dime and the shops in town. This place lived up to our expectations.

Perfect Stay

  • 5 of 5

Everything about our stay at the Sandy Cove Cottage was perfect. Ann was very responsive on all questions when we first came across the listing. Transactions were easy and the information/guidelines provided before our stay was very informative and helpful.

The house was everything we hoped it would be. Well maintained, comfortable, furnished beautifully and functionally, reasonably priced, and really brought out the essence of the area.

The area itself was beautiful and we enjoyed walking around the area, which was quiet and charming.

Thank you for making our trip memorable!
