Moss Beach, California

Place needs some love & more attention to detail.

  • 1 of 5

The location of this place is a mixed bag. It's literally on the beach but it's also literally on a highway. This section of beach is the main entrance to the dunes meaning there's a steady stream of cars going up and down and an even steadier sound of engines revving pretty much all night long.

Visiting the beach with little ones will be a little bit of a chore. We ended up getting in our own car and driving down the beach a ways to try to avoid the "traffic" but you'll need to "look both ways" when walking to the ocean. Weird but also kind of cool.

That said the house is in bad shape. In my 20s with my college buddies this place would've been perfect but with the wife and small kids, not so much.

The place is worn down and it wasn't clean when we got there. There was sand everywhere, which is somewhat excusable but it was in between "clean" sheets and on top of dresser drawers. Needless to say we spent the first few hours cleaning ourselves. Pots and pans were stained and really dirty and generally speaking it looks like the cleaning crew just comes in and does a quick change of the sheets and moves on. Now frankly, I can tolerate a wide range of living conditions. The problem I had with this place was the fact that this trip was booked by me so to my guests, all the cleanliness issues and overall "ick" factor reflected back on me. Which I don't take lightly - hence the reason I'm even taking the time to write this review.

The management/ownership of this (and apparently a number of other properties nearby) had a "well oiled" machine with a large number of stipulations and agreements - one would think that level of scrutiny would be applied to the actual service they are providing. This seemed not to be the case.

Did I enjoy my trip - sure, it wasn't the end of the world and I was with friends and family. We also live by the beach in other California towns so seeing the cars and craziness of the dunes was kind of cool.

Would I rent this place or recommend it to others - no. Not one bit.

Look elsewhere. Unless you are a group of 20-somethings that don't really care. :)

This property is located on the beach down the street from the Oceano gate to Pismo State beach where off-roaders from far and wide drive right on the beach pulling trailers and toy haulers in a steady stream the whole time we were there. This is a spacious and well worn that we had to clean and sterilize before feeling comfortable enough to habitate. All the bed sheets, blankets and comforters were filthy and stained and had to be washed with bleach before anyone could sleep in them. So needless to say, we did not sleep much the first evening we were there. The bathrooms and kitchen had to be cleaned before feeling comfortable using them. The kitchen counters, blender, utinsils and dining room table and chairs were disgusting and had to be sanatized before using. All the suspect areas where germs collect light switches, door knobs, cabinet pulls, remote controls, bed spreads, comforters, etc. again, were disgustingly filthy and needed sanitizing. There is a non-refundable cleaning fee that is to go towards the cleaning; however, the house rules dictate we must strip the beds and linens, put them in the laundry baskets and haul down to the basement in front of the washer/dryer machines, load the dishwasher, take out the trash, etc., etc. etc. The property manager was not the least bit accomodating when we called with our complaints stating they have never had complaints on this property and then gave our number to their housekeeper who called us and argued with us about our complaints. There was not a box below that said "worst enemy" because we would not recommend this property even to them. It is not worth the high price tag. We could have stayed in a 5 star resort for this price! We will not be back.

We had a wonderful time!

  • 4 of 5

We rented this beach house because of the close location to the beach and the size of the house. Our daughter was married on the beach just outside of the beach house. It was a perfect day and a beautiful location. The house was large enough that all of our family was able to stay there, which gave us a wonderful time to visit. We had enough room that we could have a wonderful Thanksgiving meal and invited the grooms family to join us also. The wedding was held the day after Thanksgiving.

We walked down the steps of the beach house onto the sand where we set up rented chairs and an archway for our daughters intimate ceremony. It was beautiful. After the ceremony we went out to the waters edge during sunset and took some gorgeous pictures! It was an unforgettable time.

We enjoyed the large house on the beach which gave us time to visit, great walks on the beach, finding treasures on the sand, and bonfires right outside which included s'mores and story time!

We were also thrilled to be there to see the Monarch Butterflies and go to other attractions in the area. We had to make long distance arrangements (we are from New Mexico) with several vendors in the area and were very grateful with the courteous professionalism we received.

This was not our first visit to Pismo and certainly won't be the last.

The beach house was as described, and the pictures were very helpful in planning this wedding/vacation/adventure!
